Duck.ai is the clearest default choice if you want an AI chatbot whose conversations are not used to train models. DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai does not record or store chats by default, anonymizes requests before they reach model providers, and requires providers to delete prompts and responses immediately after producing a reply. Claude is a strong alternative when model-improvement sharing is disabled and Incognito chats are used. ChatGPT and Gemini can also stop training use, but you must change their privacy controls and understand their retention and review exceptions.
No training is not the same as zero processing or zero retention. Every service may still handle some content for delivering replies, preventing abuse, meeting legal duties, investigating safety incidents, processing feedback, or protecting the service. The comparison below separates those issues so you can choose a chatbot for your actual risk level.

What “not used for training” actually means
When a provider says chats are not used to train its AI models, it is limiting one specific use: adding your conversations to data used to improve future models. The provider may still process the text to generate your answer, detect abuse, investigate a flagged conversation, comply with a legal request, or handle feedback that you submit.

That distinction matters because a chatbot can offer a no-training setting while retaining data temporarily. Google, for example, says Gemini chats remain for 72 hours when Keep Activity is off so Google can provide the service and protect users. A subset can be reviewed by human reviewers, and reviewed chats may be retained for up to three years after being disconnected from the account. Those chats are excluded from training under the stated settings, but they are not instantly erased.

There are five practical questions to ask about any chatbot:
- Is no training the default, or must you opt out?
- How long are prompts and replies retained?
- Can safety reviews, feedback, legal requests, or abuse investigations create exceptions?
- Can the model provider see your unredacted request, or is it anonymized first?
- Can you keep a useful chat history while disabling model improvement?
The answers for the four services covered here are materially different.
Side-by-side comparison
| Chatbot | No-training status | Retention stated in the reviewed policy | Safety or human-review exceptions | Anonymization and provider visibility | History while training is disabled |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duck.ai | No training and no recording or storage by DuckDuckGo or underlying providers is the default, according to DuckDuckGo Help. | DuckDuckGo says chats are not recorded or stored by default. Model providers agree to delete prompts and responses immediately after generating a reply. | Exceptions are documented for feedback, legal obligations, abuse prevention, and flagged uploads. | Requests are anonymized before being sent to model providers. Providers receive the anonymized request and reply context needed to answer. | Persistent history is not the design goal; the privacy benefit comes from avoiding default storage. |
| Claude | Consumer chats are not used to improve models unless you opt in, a conversation is flagged for safety review, or another explicit opt-in applies. Incognito chats are excluded from improvement. | Not stated in the supplied Anthropic policy summary; check Anthropic’s current consumer retention terms for your account and region. | Anthropic identifies safety review as an exception even when you have not opted in to model improvement. | No anonymization promise is stated in the supplied summary. Anthropic operates the model, so assume the service can process the content needed to provide and secure it. | Yes. You can retain ordinary account history while disabling model-improvement sharing; Incognito is intended for one-off sessions. |
| ChatGPT | Training use is conditional. You must turn off the model-improvement option or use Temporary Chat. | Not stated in the supplied OpenAI policy summary; retention depends on the product mode and current account policy. | An opt-out limits model-improvement use, not every form of service processing. Temporary Chat is a separate mode with its own handling rules. | No anonymization guarantee is stated in the supplied summary. OpenAI processes requests to provide the service and enforce safety controls. | Yes for normal chats when model improvement is disabled. Temporary Chat is available when you do not want a conversation in normal history. |
| Gemini | Turn Keep Activity off or use Temporary Chat. Future chats are then not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. | With Keep Activity off, Google retains chats for 72 hours for service delivery and protection. Human-reviewed chats may be retained for up to three years. | A subset of chats can be reviewed by human reviewers. Feedback can include associated conversation data and changes the no-training analysis. | Chats are disconnected from the account before being sent to service providers, but Google still handles the content for the service and safety purposes described. | Keep Activity off limits training while the 72-hour service-retention window applies. Temporary Chat is the separate no-training mode. |
1. Duck.ai: the strongest default privacy posture
Duck.ai is the best fit when you want the service itself to make the privacy-preserving choice without first changing an account setting. DuckDuckGo’s current Help language is unusually explicit: “By default, Duck.ai does not record or store any of your chats, and your conversations are not used to train chat models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying model providers.”
The service adds a second protection layer by anonymizing requests before they reach the underlying model providers. Those providers agree to delete prompts and responses immediately after generating a reply, never use Duck.ai conversations to train their models, and never share the data for their own commercial purposes. That arrangement is different from sending a prompt directly to a model provider under its ordinary consumer account terms.

What Duck.ai still allows or retains
“No storage by default” does not mean that every possible data path disappears. DuckDuckGo documents exceptions for information you submit as feedback, material involved in legal obligations, data needed for abuse prevention, and uploads that are flagged for review. Avoid attaching sensitive files or sending sensitive feedback if you need the narrowest possible exposure.
When Duck.ai is the right choice
- You want no-training and no-default-storage language without managing a complicated account setting.
- You value anonymized, multi-model access rather than a single provider’s account ecosystem.
- You are asking one-off questions and do not need a permanent searchable transcript.
Duck.ai is not a promise that an illegal, abusive, or safety-flagged request will never be examined. It is a strong default, not immunity from necessary safety and legal processing.
2. Claude: private model improvement with Incognito sessions
Anthropic’s consumer policy, dated March 16, 2026, says chats and coding sessions are used to improve models only in specified circumstances: when you opt in, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when you otherwise explicitly opt in. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude.
This makes Claude a practical choice for people who need a normal, usable history for routine work but want to prevent that history from becoming model-improvement data. Disable model-improvement sharing in the account’s privacy controls, then use Incognito for a particularly sensitive one-off session.

Recommended Claude workflow
- Open Claude’s account or privacy settings and locate the control governing use of chats to improve models.
- Leave model-improvement sharing disabled unless you deliberately want to contribute conversations.
- Start an Incognito chat for a sensitive question that should not be used for model improvement.
- Do not treat the setting as a ban on all processing: Anthropic’s stated safety-review exception still applies.
- Review current retention terms for your region before entering regulated, confidential, or legally privileged material.
The important limitation is scope. The supplied Anthropic statement establishes the model-improvement rules, but it does not establish a single retention period for every Claude consumer account. Retention, deletion, and review terms can vary by product and jurisdiction, so check the current policy rather than assuming Incognito means immediate deletion.
3. ChatGPT: use the opt-out or Temporary Chat controls
ChatGPT does not provide a universal no-training promise for every consumer conversation. OpenAI provides a model-improvement opt-out and a Temporary Chat mode. The opt-out is suitable when you want ordinary conversations to remain available while preventing them from being used to improve models. Temporary Chat is the better choice when you do not want a conversation in your normal history.
How to reduce training use in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT settings and go to Data Controls.
- Turn off the setting that allows conversations to improve OpenAI’s models.
- After major account, app, or product changes, revisit Data Controls and verify that the choice is still active.
- For a sensitive one-off session, start a Temporary Chat instead of a normal conversation.
- Remember that the opt-out limits model-improvement use; it does not eliminate processing required to answer, secure, or operate the service.
Temporary Chat and the standard opt-out solve different problems. The first is a session mode; the second is an account preference for ordinary chats. If you need a searchable history, use the opt-out. If you need a disposable session, use Temporary Chat.

What happens when Keep Activity is off
Keep Activity off is not immediate deletion. Google retains chats for 72 hours to provide the service and protect users. A subset can be reviewed by human reviewers. Google says reviewed chats may be retained for up to three years, and chats are disconnected from the account before being sent to service providers.
How to use Gemini with training disabled
- Open Gemini’s settings or privacy controls and switch Keep Activity off.
- Use Temporary Chat when you want the explicit temporary-chat treatment rather than a normal session.
- Do not submit feedback containing sensitive material. Google says feedback can include associated conversation data, which is an exception to the simple “Keep Activity off” rule.
- Allow for the stated 72-hour service-retention period even though the chats are excluded from training.
- If a conversation could be reviewed for safety, do not assume that account disconnection prevents human access.
Gemini is therefore conditional rather than private by default: the no-training result depends on the setting you choose, and the service still has defined retention and review pathways.
No training versus no history, no review, and no provider access
These privacy goals are often confused:
- No model training: your conversation is excluded from data used to improve future models, subject to stated exceptions.
- No account history: the conversation does not remain in your normal chat list. Temporary or Incognito modes generally address this goal.
- No provider access: the model operator cannot read the content. None of the four services establishes that guarantee for ordinary operation; they must process prompts to produce replies.
- No retention: copies are deleted immediately or are never stored, except for documented safety, legal, feedback, or abuse cases.
- Anonymization: identifying account information is removed or separated before a request reaches another provider. Duck.ai explicitly describes this step; the other summaries do not provide the same promise.
Choose the control that matches the threat you are addressing. If the concern is future model development, disable training use. If the concern is a visible transcript, choose a temporary or Incognito mode. If the material is too sensitive to be processed by a third party at all, do not put it into a consumer chatbot.

Choose Duck.ai for the strongest default
Use Duck.ai when you want explicit no-training language, anonymized requests, and no default chat storage without first changing settings. It is the clearest match for the question “Which AI chatbot does not use my chats for training?” Keep its feedback, legal, abuse-prevention, and flagged-upload exceptions in mind.

Operational checklist before entering sensitive information
- Identify the data: personal identifiers, health information, financial records, customer secrets, source code, or ordinary public text.
- Select the chatbot whose default or setting matches your requirement; do not rely on a generic “private” label.
- Confirm the training control immediately before use, especially after an app update or account migration.
- Use Temporary Chat or Incognito when a normal history is unnecessary.
- Remove names, account numbers, addresses, API keys, passwords, and unnecessary attachments.
- Do not send sensitive content in feedback forms, because feedback can create a separate processing path.
- Keep a record of the policy date and setting if you are handling regulated or client data.
- Recheck the provider’s current privacy page before relying on the service for a new category of confidential work.
Why these policies can change
Privacy controls are product features, not permanent technical guarantees. Providers can change default settings, rename controls, add review categories, or apply different terms to business, education, API, and consumer products. The statements summarized here reflect the cited policy positions available on October 20, 2026, including Anthropic’s March 16, 2026 consumer article and Google’s October 19, 2026 Gemini help update.
There is no defensible percentage or universal ranking that measures how much training data each service receives. The useful comparison is the documented combination of defaults, settings, retention windows, anonymization, and exceptions. Recheck those details at the moment you create an account or submit sensitive material.
The Bottom Line
For the clearest default no-training and no-default-storage posture, use Duck.ai. Claude is the strongest settings-based alternative with model-improvement sharing disabled and Incognito for sensitive sessions. ChatGPT and Gemini can also prevent training use, but require active controls and still allow defined service, safety, feedback, or retention processes.
