DuckDuckGo says it anonymizes chats, does not require an account, does not store conversations by default, and does not use them to train DuckDuckGo or its model providers. Claude is the better-known mainstream option if you use its incognito mode and accept limited safety-related exceptions. Gemini is useful when Google integration matters, but its privacy notice allows broader data collection, connected-app access and human review.
No consumer chatbot can promise absolute secrecy. Legal demands, abuse investigations, safety systems, compromised accounts, connected services and settings that you enable can all change what happens to a conversation. The practical goal is to choose the narrowest data collection and retention policy that still gives you the capabilities you need.

Quick answer: which Meta AI alternative is most private?
For the privacy defaults documented in this comparison, choose Duck.ai. DuckDuckGo says that, by default, Duck.ai does not record or store chats, does not require an account, anonymizes conversations before they reach model providers and does not use conversations to train its own or providers’ models. Its provider agreements require deletion after a response is generated and prohibit training use, although the agreements include specific exceptions.

Choose Gemini when access to Google services, files or connected applications is more important than minimizing data exposure. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice describes collection of prompts, files, device and location data, connected-app information and interaction logs. It also says some collected data is reviewed by humans.
What “private AI assistant” actually means
Privacy is not one switch. Compare an assistant across separate questions:
- Retention: Is a prompt saved, and for how long?
- Training: Can the provider use your conversation to improve a model?
- Identity: Is your chat tied to an account, phone number or identifiable profile?
- Human access: Can employees or contractors review samples?
- Data scope: Does the service receive only your text, or also files, location, device information and connected-app content?
- Memory: Can the assistant carry details from one conversation into later chats?
- Deletion: Can you delete activity, set automatic deletion or remove copies held by connected services?
- Capability: Does a privacy-focused service provide the web access, file handling, voice, speed or model choice you need?
A “not stored” statement normally describes the provider’s ordinary product operation, not every possible copy. A browser may retain local history, a screenshot may exist on your device, a connected calendar may keep data under its own policy and a legal or safety exception may permit retention. Treat privacy claims as policy commitments with boundaries, not as a guarantee that information is immune from every request or failure.
Comparison of the leading alternatives
| Assistant | Default chat retention | Training use | Account and anonymization | Human-review exposure | Connected data scope | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duck.ai | DuckDuckGo says chats are not recorded or stored by default; providers agree to delete prompts and replies after generating a response. | DuckDuckGo and its underlying providers say Duck.ai conversations are not used to train their models. | No account required; DuckDuckGo anonymizes requests before sending them to providers. | Provider agreements limit commercial sharing; documented safety and legal exceptions still apply. | Primarily the prompt and any content you submit; broad account-linked integrations are not required. | Privacy-first users who can accept a lighter account and ecosystem experience. |
| Claude | Incognito chats are designed for conversations that are not retained as ordinary history, but Anthropic’s safety systems and legal obligations can create exceptions. | Anthropic says incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if Model Improvement is enabled. | Use incognito mode intentionally; ordinary account settings and ordinary chats have different treatment. | Anthropic says safety classifiers can process content, creating a limited exception to the no-improvement promise. | Primarily the content and files you provide; integration scope depends on the features you enable. | Mainstream capability with a privacy-conscious temporary-chat workflow. |
| Gemini | Activity deletion and auto-delete controls are available, but Google says reviewed data may be retained for up to three years. | Privacy treatment depends on Gemini activity and improvement settings; the notice describes data use for service operation and improvement. | Typically used within a Google account, where activity and settings can be managed. | Google says human reviewers, including trained service-provider reviewers, review some collected data. | Prompts, files, device and location data, interaction logs and information from connected apps may be processed; connected services can keep their own copies. | Users who prioritize Google ecosystem integration over the narrowest data boundary. |
The table describes published policy positions, not a security audit. A provider can follow its policy and still be compelled to disclose data, suffer an account takeover or retain material under an exception.
Duck.ai: the clearest privacy-first choice
What DuckDuckGo promises
DuckDuckGo’s help pages state: “By default, Duck.ai does not record or store any of your chats, and your conversations are not used to train chat models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying model providers.” The service is designed to add a privacy layer between you and several underlying language-model providers.
DuckDuckGo says you can use Duck.ai without creating an account. It anonymizes a request before forwarding it, so the model provider receives the conversation without the normal direct account identity attached by a provider’s own application. That design addresses two separate risks: having a provider build a profile tied to your account and having the provider retain the text itself.

Provider deletion commitments and their limits
DuckDuckGo also states that its model providers agree to “Delete your prompts and responses immediately after generating a reply” and “Never use your Duck.ai conversations to train their models.” “Immediately” is a provider commitment for the normal response path, not proof that no transient technical copy can exist in logs, caches or safety systems.

The published exceptions matter. OpenAI prompt caching may last up to one hour. Anthropic may retain chats when legally required or when needed to combat malicious use. Those exceptions are narrower than ordinary history-based products, but they mean “does not save my chats” should be read as “does not keep ordinary chat history by default under the stated policy,” not as an absolute deletion guarantee.
How to use Duck.ai with the least exposure
- Open Duck.ai in a private browser window if you do not want the browser to retain a normal local session.
- Start a new conversation for each unrelated task instead of building a long profile of personal details in one thread.
- Remove names, account numbers, addresses, access tokens and other identifiers before submitting text.
- Upload only the smallest excerpt or file needed to answer your question.
- After receiving the answer, clear the local browser history or downloaded files if the device is shared.
- Remember that an answer copied into email, notes, cloud storage or a connected application is then governed by that destination’s policy.
Duck.ai trade-offs
The privacy architecture is strongest when you need a general-purpose answer without signing into a broad ecosystem. You may give up some account-linked convenience, persistent personalization and tightly integrated services. The available model lineup and features can also change because Duck.ai routes requests to underlying providers rather than operating one single model. For a privacy-sensitive question, that trade is usually favorable; for a workflow built around a personal calendar, drive or long-term memory, it may be less convenient.
Claude: a mainstream option when you use incognito chats
What incognito mode changes
Anthropic’s help documentation says: “Your incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your privacy settings.” This is a specific promise about model-improvement use, not a universal claim that every processing step disappears.
Incognito mode is therefore the key operational choice. If a conversation contains sensitive material, begin it as an incognito chat rather than assuming a global setting will retroactively change existing conversations. Check the chat header or creation control so you know the temporary mode is active before entering the sensitive text.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe safety-classifier exception
Anthropic notes that safety classifiers can create an exception. A classifier may inspect content to detect abuse or policy violations even when the conversation is excluded from improvement training. This distinction is important: “not used to improve Claude” does not mean “never processed by an automated safety system” and does not override a legal retention requirement.

A careful Claude workflow
- Open Claude and choose the incognito or temporary-chat option before typing.
- Confirm that the interface identifies the conversation as incognito.
- Disable optional model-improvement sharing if your account presents that control, while remembering that incognito mode is the specific protection Anthropic describes.
- Use placeholders for people, companies and account identifiers; keep the mapping on your own device.
- Do not paste passwords, private keys, recovery codes or unredacted medical and financial records.
- When finished, avoid copying the transcript into a synced document unless you want that service to retain it.
Where Claude fits
Claude is a reasonable compromise for readers who need a polished general assistant, file analysis or writing help but do not want every sensitive task tied to ordinary chat history. It is not the strongest choice if you want no-account use and provider-level anonymization; Duck.ai is better aligned with those requirements.
Gemini: powerful Google integration with a wider privacy surface
What Google says it may collect
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice describes processing of prompts, files, device and location data, connected-app information and interaction logs. That broader scope can make Gemini more useful inside a Google-centered workflow, but it also creates more places where sensitive context can enter the system.
Connected applications deserve particular attention. A chatbot that can reference mail, documents, maps or other services may receive information beyond the sentence you typed. Those connected services may retain their own copies under separate policies, so deleting Gemini activity does not necessarily delete every downstream copy.

Human review and retention
Google’s notice says: “Human reviewers (including trained reviewers from our service providers) review some of the data we collect for these purposes.” Google also offers activity deletion and auto-delete settings, but says data reviewed by humans may be retained for up to three years. A short auto-delete period therefore does not erase the retention period that can apply to reviewed samples.
How to reduce Gemini exposure
- Open Gemini’s activity and privacy controls from your Google account before using it for sensitive work.
- Choose the shortest auto-delete period that still supports your workflow.
- Review connected apps and disconnect anything that does not need access to the assistant.
- Turn off optional improvement or sharing controls where available, then recheck them after major product updates.
- Check whether location, device and activity permissions are necessary for the task; deny permissions that add no value.
- Delete the Gemini conversation and any uploaded file when the task is complete, then check the connected service for a separate copy.
When Gemini is still the right choice
Gemini can be the practical choice for a user who needs Google account context, connected documents or location-aware assistance and accepts the larger data boundary. It should not be presented as the privacy winner in this comparison. Its value is integration, not the narrowest default retention model.
What about ChatGPT?
Whether you can use ChatGPT privately depends on the current product, account type and privacy controls you select. The evidence summarized here does not establish a single ChatGPT default that can be fairly compared with Duck.ai’s anonymized, no-account design or Anthropic’s explicit incognito statement. Treat ChatGPT as a settings-dependent option rather than assuming that a temporary-looking interface means zero retention.

Before entering sensitive material, look for the product’s temporary-chat control, model-improvement setting, memory controls, history controls and data-export or deletion options. Read the current privacy explanation attached to your account, because labels and retention rules can change between consumer and organizational plans. If you cannot verify the setting, use Duck.ai for the lowest-exposure workflow supported by this comparison.
Privacy controls every assistant user should apply
Disable optional improvement sharing
Where an assistant offers a choice about using conversations to improve models, turn it off unless you have a clear reason to opt in. This setting may not affect safety processing, legal retention or copies already exported elsewhere, but it removes one avoidable use.
Use temporary or incognito chats for sensitive tasks
Temporary modes reduce the chance that a conversation becomes ordinary account history. Activate the mode before typing; changing a setting afterward may not change how earlier messages were handled.
Minimize the data in the prompt
- Replace real names with neutral labels.
- Crop documents to the relevant paragraph or page.
- Delete signatures, metadata, account numbers and tracking identifiers.
- Never submit passwords, private keys, authentication codes or full payment-card numbers.
- Summarize a medical or legal situation instead of uploading an unredacted record.
Audit connected apps and permissions
Disconnect mail, storage, calendar, location and other integrations that are not essential. A connected app can retain a copy even after the assistant’s own activity is deleted.
Set deletion and auto-delete deliberately
Choose an automatic deletion period, then perform an occasional manual review. Auto-delete is a housekeeping control, not proof that every backup, safety record or human-reviewed sample disappears on the same schedule.

Choosing by use case
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why | What to accept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Least account linkage and strongest default minimization | Duck.ai | No account is required, requests are anonymized and chats are not stored or used for training by default according to DuckDuckGo. | Provider exceptions, fewer ecosystem integrations and potentially less persistent personalization. |

| Unverified or changing privacy controls | Do not enter sensitive content until settings are confirmed | Policy labels differ by product, account and date. | Less convenience while you verify the actual terms. |
How the 2026 user research changes the decision
A June 2026 study of 1,999 U.S. adults who use AI assistants found that privacy concern was widespread, while people still selected platforms according to the task they needed to complete. That result explains why there is no universal winner for every reader. A person drafting a public email may reasonably value integration and speed; the same person handling a confidential client note should choose the narrowest data path.
Make the decision task by task. For a one-off question that contains no personal data, capability may dominate. For a conversation involving identity, health, finances, work secrets or legal exposure, retention, anonymization and human-review limits should dominate. Revisit the choice when a service adds a connector, changes its privacy notice or introduces a new memory feature.
Common misconceptions and failure modes
“No training” means no processing
Training exclusion does not eliminate routing, abuse detection, legal compliance, billing records, browser history or copies you create yourself. Duck.ai’s and Claude’s statements are valuable because they address model-improvement use, but they do not promise that no system ever handles the text.
Deleting a chat deletes every copy
Deletion from an assistant’s activity view may not remove a downloaded file, a browser cache, a connected-app copy or a record preserved under a documented exception. Check each destination separately.
Incognito is the same as anonymous
Claude’s incognito mode addresses improvement use; it does not provide Duck.ai’s no-account anonymization architecture. A logged-in service can still know which account initiated a request even when the chat is excluded from improvement.
A privacy notice is a technical guarantee
Policies describe intended handling and exceptions. They do not protect against a compromised password, malware on your device, a mistaken sharing action or a lawful demand for information. Use data minimization and account security alongside the policy controls.
Bottom line
Start with Duck.ai when privacy is the deciding factor: it requires no account, anonymizes requests and says chats are not stored or used for model training by default. Use Claude’s incognito mode when you need a mainstream assistant and can accept safety and legal exceptions. Use Gemini when Google integration is worth a wider data boundary, but configure deletion, permissions and connected apps before sharing anything sensitive. Whichever assistant you choose, submit the minimum information necessary and treat every optional integration as another place your conversation may be retained.
