Joplin is the strongest choice when local AI is the deciding requirement. Its AI features are off by default, and its documented local-model path uses Ollama or LM Studio so note content can stay on your device or private network. Anytype is the better fit for an encrypted, database-like workspace with local-only mode, user-controlled keys, peer-to-peer sync and self-hosted backups. Obsidian is the simplest local-vault option: no account is required and its security page says it collects no telemetry, but every AI plugin or provider must be checked separately. Logseq is worth considering for linked knowledge management, although current official material does not establish an equally complete local-AI and cloud-storage policy.
What “private AI notes without cloud storage” actually requires
A note app can be “local” in one respect and still send data elsewhere. Your notes may be stored in a local folder while an AI command uploads selected text to a remote provider. Conversely, an app may encrypt synchronized data so the service cannot read it, while your own backup node or another device still receives a copy. Decide what you are trying to prevent before choosing an app.

- Cloud storage: a copy of the note database is kept on a vendor-controlled server.
- Remote AI processing: note text, attachments or prompts are transmitted to an AI provider for summarization, search or generation.
- Uncontrolled synchronization: a sync service or plugin copies files without a destination you selected.
- Account and telemetry exposure: an account, diagnostics or usage events reveal information about your activity even when note content stays local.
The practical standard for a no-cloud workflow is therefore: keep the primary vault on your device, use a local model or a provider you explicitly trust, disable synchronization you do not control, and maintain encrypted backups that you can restore. “Local” does not mean that every feature in an app is local.

Shortlist at a glance
| App | What is documented | Best use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joplin | Notes and images are saved to the device. AI is disabled by default. Ollama and LM Studio are documented local-model options. | Private AI actions on a personal device or private network. | Optional cloud sync follows the selected provider’s policy; a remote AI provider receives the relevant note content when selected. |
| Anytype | Local-first encrypted storage, user-controlled keys, offline account creation, local-only mode, peer-to-peer local-network sync and self-hosted backup choices. | A structured workspace with pages, objects and databases as well as notes. | Encrypted sync still sends data to the devices or backup nodes you choose. |
| Obsidian | Local Markdown vault; no account is required and its security page says no telemetry data is collected. | Simple, account-free local files with a large plugin ecosystem. | The cited security documentation does not establish that every AI plugin or provider is local. |
Logseq belongs on the investigation list for linked knowledge management. Its official downloads material establishes the application and its knowledge-base focus, but does not provide equally specific, current documentation for built-in local AI or a complete cloud-storage policy. Treat its privacy posture as configuration-dependent until you verify the exact sync and AI behavior in the release you install.

Joplin: the best-documented route to local AI
Why its AI design fits a no-cloud requirement
Joplin’s official AI privacy article states, “Joplin does not send your notes to an AI service by default.” AI features are disabled by default, and you choose the provider before any AI request is made. That default matters: installing the app does not silently route your existing notebooks to an AI endpoint.
The same documentation names Ollama and LM Studio as local-model choices. A model can run on the computer holding the notes or on a private-network machine that you control. In that arrangement, the note text does not need to leave your device or private network for the AI operation. The model software, operating-system services and network configuration still deserve review, but the data path is materially different from a hosted AI API.
How to configure a local Joplin AI workflow
- Install Joplin on the device where the vault will live. Keep the initial data directory on an encrypted disk or an encrypted user profile.
- Leave synchronization unconfigured while you establish the AI path. This prevents an automatic first sync from creating a remote copy before you have chosen a destination.
- Install and run Ollama or LM Studio on the same device, or on a private-network computer you administer. Download a model whose license and hardware requirements you understand.
- Open Joplin’s AI settings and select the local provider. Enter the local endpoint supplied by that model application rather than a hosted provider endpoint. Labels and endpoint fields can change between Joplin releases, so confirm the setting in the version you use.
- Test with a disposable note. Use text that contains no personal or confidential information, run one AI action, and confirm that the local model reports the request. A test catches an incorrectly entered endpoint before you use sensitive notebooks.
- Inspect the model application’s logs and network permissions. A local endpoint keeps prompts on your network, but the model runner may have update, diagnostic or download functions of its own.
For a machine that is not always available, put the model runner on a private-network computer and restrict its listening address and firewall rules to the devices that need it. A private-network model is still local in the practical sense that you control the network and storage; it is not the same as sending notes to a public AI service.
Sync, attachments and provider boundaries
Joplin’s privacy policy says its apps do not send data to services without authorization and that notes or images are saved to your device. Sync remains optional. If you enable it, the destination’s policy controls what happens to the synchronized copy. A self-hosted or otherwise user-controlled destination gives you more control than an account-based hosted service, but it also makes you responsible for hardening, updates, access control and backups.
The boundary changes immediately when you select a cloud AI provider. Joplin’s AI documentation says that provider receives the relevant note content for processing. Do not assume that a local vault protects a prompt sent through a remote provider. Keep remote AI disabled for notebooks whose contents must remain inside your device or private network.
Who should choose Joplin
Choose Joplin when you want the clearest documented switch between no AI, a local model and an explicitly selected remote provider. It suits people who are comfortable managing a model runner and who prefer conventional notebooks and notes over a database-oriented workspace.
Anytype: encrypted, local-first workspace with user-held keys
What makes Anytype different
Anytype describes its design with the statement, “Nobody can see what’s in your vault, except for you.” Its product information describes local, on-device encryption and keys controlled by the user. Data is stored locally first and encrypted before leaving the device. That combination is aimed at a workspace that can contain pages, objects and databases, not only linear notes.

Account creation can work offline. You can select local-only mode when you do not want synchronization, or use peer-to-peer synchronization on a local network. Anytype also documents self-hosted backup-node options. Those choices let you decide whether another copy exists, where it exists and which hardware holds it.
Choosing a storage and sync mode
- Create the account or identity while offline if that is your requirement. Record the recovery information exactly as instructed; user-controlled keys mean that recovery is your responsibility.
- Select local-only mode for a single-device vault. This is the most direct way to avoid any synchronization destination.
- Use peer-to-peer sync only between devices you own and administer. Keep those devices on a network you trust and remove old devices from the trust relationship when they are retired.
- For resilience, configure a self-hosted backup node. Place it on hardware with full-disk encryption, restricted accounts and a tested backup schedule.
- Test recovery before storing irreplaceable material. A private vault that cannot be restored is not a reliable backup strategy.
Encryption does not eliminate operational exposure. Every synchronized device or backup node becomes part of the security boundary. A compromised laptop, weak server account or unencrypted export can expose data even when the application’s normal synchronization is encrypted.
AI considerations
Anytype’s documented strengths are storage, encryption, keys and synchronization choices. The cited product and FAQ material does not establish a single built-in local-AI workflow equivalent to Joplin’s explicit Ollama or LM Studio documentation. If you add an AI integration, verify whether it runs on-device, which text it can read, and whether it makes network requests. Use local-only mode and disable integrations that require a remote endpoint when zero cloud exposure is the requirement.
Who should choose Anytype
Anytype is the natural fit when privacy must coexist with a structured personal knowledge system: linked pages, reusable objects, databases and offline work. It requires more deliberate key, device and backup management than a simple folder of text files.
Obsidian: the simplest local-vault model
What its security documentation establishes
Obsidian stores notes in a local Markdown vault. Its security page says no account is required and no telemetry data is collected. The same page reports penetration testing and source-code auditing of its apps. Those statements support an account-free, local-file workflow: you can create and edit a vault without handing note content to a hosted service merely to use the core application.
This does not certify every extension. AI functionality in an Obsidian setup depends on the plugin and provider you choose. A plugin may call a hosted model, collect diagnostics, or access more of the vault than the single note you intended to summarize. The core app’s security claims cannot be extended automatically to third-party code.
How to keep an Obsidian vault local
- Create the vault in a folder on an encrypted local drive. Avoid placing that folder inside a consumer cloud-sync directory if your policy is no cloud storage.
- Skip account creation unless you have a specific reason to use an account-linked feature. The security documentation says an account is not required for the core application.
- Review each plugin before installation. Read its permissions, privacy statement, network requirements and update source. Prefer extensions whose operation is understandable from their documentation.
- Keep AI disabled until you know the data path. If a plugin asks for an API key or names a hosted provider, assume selected note text will leave the device unless its documentation proves otherwise.
- Restrict the plugin set. Remove extensions you do not use and recheck network behavior after updates.
Obsidian is attractive for readers who already have a disciplined file-backup routine. Its privacy advantage is clarity: the vault is an ordinary local file tree. Its limitation is that privacy becomes your responsibility once you add synchronization, transcription, search services or AI plugins.

Logseq: a candidate that needs configuration verification
Logseq is positioned as a knowledge-base application and is relevant to readers who organize information through linked, outline-style entries. The official downloads material confirms the application, but the available documentation does not provide equally specific current statements about built-in local AI, telemetry or a complete cloud-storage policy.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That evidence gap does not prove that Logseq is cloud-dependent or unsafe. It means you should not label a particular installation “zero cloud” without checking the release’s settings and integrations. Before importing sensitive notes, identify where the graph is stored, whether sync is enabled, what backup destination is used, and whether any AI or extension makes outbound requests.
Verification checklist for a Logseq installation
- Open the graph directory and confirm it is on a local encrypted volume.
- Check synchronization settings before opening the graph on a second device.
- Review installed plugins and remove any that require a remote service you do not intend to use.
- Use a test graph to observe network activity during indexing, search and AI-related actions.
- Document the exact version and configuration that passed your review; updates can change behavior.
Decision guide: match the app to your privacy priority
Choose local AI first
Start with Joplin if the central requirement is a documented local model. Its default-disabled AI and explicit Ollama and LM Studio options make the data path easier to reason about. You still need to keep cloud AI unselected and decide whether optional synchronization is acceptable.
Choose encrypted structure first
Choose Anytype if you want a database-like workspace and the ability to select local-only operation, local-network peer synchronization or a self-hosted backup node. Plan key recovery and device security before relying on it for important records.
Choose local files and minimal account exposure
Choose Obsidian if a local Markdown vault and no-account operation are more important than an integrated privacy model for AI. Treat every plugin as a separate software supply-chain decision.

1. Define the boundary in writing
Decide whether “no cloud” means no vendor storage, no remote AI processing, no third-party backups, or all three. Write down allowed destinations, such as one encrypted laptop and one encrypted external drive. This prevents a convenience feature from quietly changing your policy.

2. Start with synchronization disabled
Install the app, create a small test vault and leave sync off. Add one harmless note, then inspect where files are created. Only after you understand the local path should you decide whether another device or backup node is needed.
3. Keep AI local or off
For Joplin, select a local Ollama or LM Studio endpoint, or leave AI disabled. For Anytype, verify the behavior of any integration rather than assuming that encrypted storage makes an AI request local. For Obsidian and Logseq, inspect each plugin’s provider and network behavior. If you cannot establish the data path, do not use that feature for sensitive notes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Control network permissions
Use operating-system firewall rules, separate user accounts or a dedicated private-network host where appropriate. Permit only the connections needed for model downloads, local inference or synchronization. Recheck permissions after application and plugin updates.
5. Back up locally and encrypt the backup
Keep at least one additional copy on encrypted storage. Back up the application’s complete data directory, including attachments and configuration needed for restoration. A backup that contains plaintext exports defeats the privacy boundary of the primary vault.
6. Test restoration and conflicts
Restore a copy to a spare directory or test device on a schedule. If you use more than one editing device, test what happens when both change the same note while disconnected. Resolve conflicts deliberately instead of assuming that the newest file is always correct.
7. Re-audit after every major change
New plugins, AI providers, sync destinations and mobile clients can alter the data flow. Record the approved configuration, review outbound connections and remove features that no longer meet your boundary.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“The notes are local, so the AI must be local”
False. A local vault can send selected passages to a hosted model. Check the provider setting and the plugin’s network behavior for every AI command.
Best Value
“Encrypted sync means there is no other copy”
Encrypted synchronization still places data on the devices or backup nodes you selected. Secure those endpoints, protect their accounts and delete retired copies.
“No account means no privacy work”
An account-free app reduces one exposure, but plugins, operating-system backups, crash reports and shared folders can still copy data. Review the entire device workflow.
“A local model has no security risks”
Local inference avoids a hosted AI provider, but model files, runners, logs and network listeners remain software to update and restrict. Use least-privilege accounts and keep sensitive prompts out of diagnostic logs.
“A backup is safe because it is offline”
Offline media can be lost, stolen or corrupted. Encrypt it, keep it physically controlled and perform restoration tests so you know the backup is usable.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The strongest documented local-AI claim in this group belongs to Joplin: its official article explicitly describes default-disabled AI and local Ollama or LM Studio processing. Anytype provides the clearest documented controls for encrypted, local-first storage and user-selected synchronization destinations. Obsidian provides the clearest account and telemetry statements for a local vault, while leaving AI privacy to the plugin and provider. Logseq remains a plausible local knowledge-base option whose exact current behavior must be verified in context.
There are no independent adoption, accuracy or performance statistics established for these choices in the cited official material. The comparison is therefore about documented architecture, controls and data-flow decisions—not a benchmark of AI quality or speed.
