If you want to spend less on printer ink, start by comparing refillable ink-tank models with cartridge printers—but don’t choose by ink yield alone. Tank printers generally cost more upfront, while their replacement bottles can cost less per rated page. Your best fit depends on how much you print, what you print, and whether you need features such as automatic two-sided printing or an automatic document feeder (ADF).
Which printer with cheap ink is right for you?
These three models suit different needs; none is a universal lowest-cost choice. The cited guides provide different kinds of evidence, not a like-for-like lifetime-cost comparison, so check current printer and ink prices before buying.

| Model | Best fit | What the cited source reports | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canon PIXMA MegaTank G3270 | Budget color all-in-one with bottled ink | TechRadar’s U.S.-focused budget-printer guide names it as a budget tank recommendation and says bottled refills are cheaper than traditional cartridge ink. TechRadar’s budget printer guide | No automatic duplex printing, front paper drawer, or ADF; the guide also notes low paper capacity. It identifies the G3270 as a U.S. model and refers to the G3570 name outside the U.S. TechRadar’s guide |
| Epson EcoTank ET-4950 | Home office needing more paper capacity and document handling | TechRadar’s ink-tank roundup names it best overall in that guide and lists 250-sheet capacity and 18 ppm mono speed. TechRadar’s ink-tank guide | Costs more than basic models. The guide lists no Bluetooth and an inability to scan heavy paper; confirm the regional SKU and current specifications. TechRadar’s guide |
| Brother INKvestment MFC-T780DW | Frequent text-document printing where rated ink yield matters | Tom’s Guide reports a $20.99 black ink bottle rated for 7,500 pages, which it calculates as about 0.3 cents per text page. Tom’s Guide review | The per-page figure is a yield-based estimate, not a guaranteed real-world cost. The review reports that print, copy, and scan speeds differ among models. Tom’s Guide review |
For a lower upfront price, check the full feature list
The Canon G3270 is the clearest fit in this shortlist if you want an inexpensive color tank all-in-one and can live without automatic duplexing or an ADF. If you regularly print double-sided documents or scan multi-page jobs, those omissions may outweigh the purchase savings: consider how often you would need to handle those tasks manually.
For a home office, weigh capacity against price
The Epson ET-4950 is the more feature-rich option in the cited comparison, with a reported 250-sheet capacity. Its higher cost only makes sense if its capacity and document-handling features are useful to your workload. Check the exact model sold in your region rather than assuming every ET-4950 listing has the same specifications.

For frequent text printing, inspect the yield calculation
The Brother MFC-T780DW example is useful for understanding how a bottle’s price and rated yield translate into an estimated text-ink cost. It does not establish that the Brother is cheaper overall than the Canon or Epson: printer prices, ink prices, page mix, and yield assumptions are not compared on an identical basis.
How to compare the real cost of cheap ink
Start with your expected monthly volume and the kind of pages you print. A home that prints occasional school forms, a photo enthusiast, and a small office printing hundreds of text pages can arrive at different cost-effective choices. Canon notes that page yield can be a purchase decision factor and provides yield information for its inkjet products. Canon’s inkjet page-yield information

For the Brother example, Tom’s Guide reports a $20.99 black bottle and a 7,500-page rating, and calculates about 0.3 cents per text page. That is the reviewer’s estimate based on bottle price divided by rated yield; it excludes the printer purchase price and is not a promise about your actual cost. Tom’s Guide’s calculation
Rated yields are not guaranteed counts for every user. Coverage, document mix, print volume, and maintenance can affect how much ink you use. A page of dense graphics or photographs is not equivalent to a lightly printed text page.

Find your break-even point
To see whether a higher-priced tank model could pay off, compare the upfront premium with the ink savings you expect over your ownership period. Use current prices for the exact printer and replacement ink, then estimate ink spending at your own monthly volume and page mix. Divide the extra purchase cost by the expected monthly ink savings to estimate how many months it would take to recover the premium. If the savings are small, uncertain, or based on a volume you rarely print, a cheaper-to-buy printer may cost less overall.

- Automatic duplex printing: Useful if you often print on both sides. The budget Canon recommendation lacks it, so account for the added manual effort if duplexing matters to you.
- ADF: Lets you feed multiple pages for scanning or copying. The Canon G3270 guide notes that it has no ADF; that matters more for recurring document work than occasional single-page scans.
- Paper capacity: Higher capacity can mean fewer refills in a busy home office. TechRadar lists 250 sheets for the ET-4950; compare that with your regular workload and the exact model’s specifications.
- Speed: A listed speed can help compare models, but distinguish print, copy, and scan speeds. The cited Brother review reports differences across those tasks and models; do not treat one speed figure as a complete measure of document workflow.
- Connectivity and media handling: Check whether the printer supports the wireless or mobile-printing features and paper types you actually use. The ET-4950 guide lists no Bluetooth and says it cannot scan heavy paper.
Check model and ink compatibility before buying
Printer names and ink series can differ by market, and a similarly named printer is not necessarily the same regional model. Confirm the exact model number, included features, and replacement bottle or cartridge series on the manufacturer’s local product page. Check that the ink you plan to buy is specified for that printer; do not assume a bottle fits because the brand or product family name looks familiar.
Availability, rankings, prices, and yields can change. TechRadar says it has tested more than 200 printers and describes standardized comparisons of speed and quality across text, color, mixed documents, and photographs; those are the publisher’s testing methods, not tests conducted for this article.
