Hub-and-Spoke WireGuard in 2026: What to Check When You Add a Second Server

A second WireGuard server adds routing and endpoint decisions, not automatic redundancy. Check prefix ownership, return routes, NAT behavior, and full-tunnel endpoint handling.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding a second WireGuard server does not automatically create redundancy. It adds another peer map, more routes to coordinate, and another endpoint whose reachability must be maintained. The key is to assign every tunnel and remote prefix to the right peer, provide return routes, and make sure clients can still reach the tunnel endpoint when their traffic is routed through the tunnel.

What changes when you add a second hub?

In a hub-and-spoke network, spokes connect to a hub that provides a path to other spokes or networks. With two hubs, each WireGuard interface still has its own peer configuration. WireGuard does not automatically share routes between servers or decide which hub should take over if one fails; the surrounding operating system, routing, firewall rules, and client configuration must provide the intended paths.

WireGuard describes its public-key-to-tunnel-address association as cryptokey routing. A peer’s AllowedIPs serves two purposes: it helps select the peer for outbound traffic to a destination, and it restricts which source addresses are accepted from that peer in decrypted traffic. As a result, an incorrect prefix can cause a route to select the wrong peer, cause a packet to fail source validation, or both.

Keep address ownership unambiguous

For each WireGuard interface, give each peer only the tunnel addresses and remote network prefixes that peer is meant to represent. When a network sits behind a hub, the peers that need to reach it must have a path to that prefix through the correct hub. Avoid assigning the same destination prefix to multiple peers on the same interface unless the design deliberately accounts for how peer selection will work.

Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
  • 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
  • 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.

  • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.

AllowedIPs is not a substitute for every operating-system route or forwarding rule. Check both the WireGuard peer configuration and the host’s routing and firewall configuration. A correct peer map cannot make a packet traverse a host that does not forward it or have a route for it.

What to check when server number two does not work

There is no single failure mode inherent to a second server. Use the checks below to locate which part of the path is missing. Confirm the route in both directions: a packet can reach a remote network while its reply has no route back.

  1. Check prefix ownership. On each relevant interface, verify that a peer’s AllowedIPs contains the tunnel address and remote prefixes it is supposed to own. Check outbound destination selection and inbound source-address validation, not just whether the configuration parses.
  2. Check routes to remote networks. Confirm that the second hub has a route to networks behind the first, and that the first hub and affected clients have return routes to networks behind the second. The exact route and forwarding configuration depends on the operating system and firewall in use.
  3. Check forwarding and firewall policy. Verify that the hosts permit the needed traffic between WireGuard interfaces and attached networks. A peer can have a valid handshake while forwarding or firewall policy still blocks the traffic you want.
  4. Check endpoint reachability. Confirm that the configured endpoint can be reached over UDP and that any firewall permits the traffic. If a peer is behind NAT or a stateful firewall, check whether idle state expires before that peer needs to receive traffic.
  5. Check full-tunnel routing separately. If a client sends its default route through WireGuard, confirm that the outer UDP packets to the WireGuard endpoint still have a route outside the tunnel or are handled by an appropriate policy-routing or namespace design.
  6. Check the return path and the intended recovery. Trace the reply route as well as the forward route. If the design is meant to survive a hub failure, verify how clients detect the failure, select another endpoint, and regain the necessary routes and firewall permissions.

When PersistentKeepalive helps

A peer that sits behind NAT or a stateful firewall may be unable to receive traffic after the device has been idle and its mapping or firewall state has expired. In that case, a keepalive can maintain reachability. The WireGuard Quick Start says the default is disabled and describes 25 seconds as a sensible interval across a wide variety of firewalls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That interval is guidance, not a requirement for every peer or a guarantee that every network will preserve a mapping. Enable PersistentKeepalive only where the actual NAT or firewall behavior makes it useful. It is not a route, a failover mechanism, or a fix for incorrect AllowedIPs.

Full-tunnel clients need an endpoint path

When a client routes its default traffic into WireGuard, it still needs to send the tunnel’s own outer UDP packets to the remote endpoint. If those packets are routed back into the tunnel they are trying to establish or maintain, the tunnel can lose its path to the endpoint.

The WireGuard routing and network namespaces guide describes approaches including an explicit endpoint route, fwmark-based policy routing, and network namespaces. The right approach depends on the host’s routing design. A route tied to a fixed endpoint IP can also become stale if the peer roams and its endpoint changes; account for endpoint changes rather than assuming a hard-coded route remains correct.

Two servers are not automatically failover

A second running server is only a second server. For it to serve as a recovery path, clients need a defined and tested way to detect or respond to the first hub’s failure, select the alternate endpoint, and use routes and firewall policies that permit traffic through the alternate path. The cited WireGuard documentation explains peer setup and routing behavior; it does not promise automatic failover for a generic two-hub configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document the intended failure behavior explicitly: what changes on the client, what happens to routes, and which networks should become reachable through the alternate hub. Treat failover as a separate design requirement, not as a side effect of installing another WireGuard server.
