What counts as software support?
“Updates” can mean different things, so compare the categories rather than relying on one headline number.
- Major OS upgrades bring new operating-system versions. Fairphone states a minimum count of Android version upgrades for Gen. 6.
- Security updates address security issues and may continue on a different schedule from major OS upgrades.
- Feature drops add features between or alongside major Android releases; Google explicitly includes them in its Pixel 8 commitment.
Also check when the support clock begins and how often patches are scheduled. Fairphone says Gen. 6 security updates are monthly during roughly the first three years, then every other month. Fairphone lists the phone’s launch as June 25, 2025 in its FAQ.

How does iPhone support compare?
Apple’s compatibility list is model-specific: for iOS 26 it names iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). Apple notes that available features vary by model, region, language and carrier, so compatibility does not mean every model gets every feature. Check Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list.
Apple’s 2024 longevity paper says major OS feature updates have reached devices as far back as six years from original release, and that Apple strives to provide critical security updates after a device no longer supports the newest OS. Those are descriptions of historical practice and a stated aim, not a universal fixed-term promise for future iPhones. How to choose for a long ownership period
- Choose the kind of commitment you value. Pixel 8 and later have a stated seven-year update term covering OS updates, security updates and Feature Drops. Fairphone Gen. 6 specifies at least seven Android version upgrades, an additional security year and a security-support date.
- Check the start date, not just the purchase date. Google’s term runs from first US Google Store availability. Buying later does not restart that clock.
- Verify current compatibility and local terms. Apple’s iOS compatibility list identifies models, while manufacturer terms and availability may vary over time or by region.
- Assess the rest of the ownership equation. Battery condition, repair access, performance, price and parts availability matter too; a long software commitment does not establish that hardware will remain satisfactory for the same period.
What the update figures do—and don’t—tell you
Software support is only one part of a phone’s useful life. It does not by itself prove how well the battery will age, how easy repairs will be, or whether a phone will feel fast enough years later. Check those factors separately against your budget, preferred platform and local model availability.
