For smart lights that connect directly to Wi-Fi, start with WiZ (Philips Smart Lighting connected by WiZ) or the TP-Link Tapo L535E. Both are presented as usable without an extra lighting hub. Tapo’s Matter support does not guarantee hub-free integration with every smart-home platform, however, and WiZ Matter eligibility depends on the exact model and, for some products, when it was made. If you are willing to use a hub, IKEA is another option—but it is not a direct no-hub alternative.
What “without a Hue Bridge” actually means
A Hue Bridge is not the only way to use Philips Hue lights: Hue supports Bluetooth as well as Zigbee. But a Bluetooth setup is not the same as a Bridge-enabled Hue setup. Philips Hue says the Bridge enables Matter support, while Hue products connected via Bluetooth cannot be used with Matter. So it helps to separate two goals: avoiding a Hue Bridge, and connecting lights to a smart-home platform without any controller.

Those goals do not always coincide. A bulb can connect directly to Wi-Fi for its own app and still require a platform hub or controller for a particular Matter integration. Check the requirements for the exact bulb and platform you plan to use.

WiZ for a broader Wi-Fi lighting line
Signify describes Philips Smart Lighting connected by WiZ as Wi-Fi-based lighting controlled through the WiZ app without an additional hub or bridge. The name can be confusing: these products share Philips branding, but they are not Hue bulbs and do not use the Hue platform. Treat the product name and app as part of the purchase check, not just the Philips label.

For Matter, check WiZ’s compatibility criteria for your country and exact model. WiZ lists different US and European criteria; some product families depend on a Q2 2021-or-later manufacturing date and packaging identifiers, while specified models qualify regardless of manufacturing date. Do not assume every older WiZ bulb supports Matter.
Tapo L535E for a specific bulb to compare
TP-Link’s US product information gives the L535E a brightness rating of 1055 lumens and lists millions of colors, tunable white, Matter support, scheduling, and energy monitoring. TP-Link describes it as a Wi-Fi bulb that connects directly without a hub. These are manufacturer specifications, not comparative test results.

“Alternative to Hue” does not mean identical features or compatibility. Philips Hue describes its White and Color Ambiance lights as covering 2200–6500 K and more than 16 million colors, and says Hue gradient lights can show multiple colors simultaneously. Those are Hue’s stated specifications, not independent comparisons with the alternatives above.

- Setup architecture: Direct Wi-Fi avoids a separate lighting bridge, but it is different from a hub-based system such as IKEA’s DIRIGERA setup.
When IKEA makes sense
IKEA is worth considering if you want its smart-lighting ecosystem and are comfortable connecting a hub to your router. IKEA’s support guidance cited here is for the UK: it says smart products can be managed through DIRIGERA and IKEA Home smart, and describes a setup in which the hub and TRÅDFRI gateway connect to the Wi-Fi router but do not need an active internet connection. That regional support information should not be treated as a universal setup guarantee.

How to choose before you buy
- Decide whether you mean no Hue Bridge or no hub of any kind. If you want direct app control without an extra lighting hub, focus on WiZ or Tapo’s direct Wi-Fi use.
- Name the platform you want to use. Check the bulb’s current compatibility details and whether that platform requires a controller for Matter.
- Match the exact model to your country and fixture. Verify bulb format, local availability, and—where relevant—hardware or manufacturing criteria for Matter.
- Compare the features you will use. Look at the exact model’s stated brightness, white-light options, color support, and app features rather than assuming all bulbs in a brand’s range are alike.
- Check the current listing. Confirm model version, regional compatibility, and stock before ordering; availability and specifications can differ by market.
