PhantomJS is no longer a sensible default for new screenshot work: its maintainer suspended development in 2018, and the project repository was archived in 2023. For a straightforward URL-to-image job, use a hosted screenshot API; for persistent browser state or multi-step interaction, use a managed browser connection or operate a browser-automation library yourself. ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try when clean captures and billing only for clean shots matter.
Why replace PhantomJS?
PhantomJS was a scriptable headless WebKit browser used for automation, testing, and screen capture. On March 3, 2018, maintainer Ariya Hidayat said active contributions were lacking and that version 2.1.1 would remain the last known stable release. The repository was archived on May 30, 2023; its overview labels development suspended. The precise status is suspended development followed by an archived repository, rather than an actively maintained browser project. Hidayat’s maintenance notice and the PhantomJS repository document those milestones.

Choose a replacement by how much browser behavior you need to own. A screenshot API handles a one-off render behind an HTTP request. A managed browser connection or self-operated automation library is a better fit when your workflow needs persistent state, several interactions, or custom browser logic.

| Option | Operating model | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Hosted screenshot API and MCP server | One-call captures where consent clutter, failed-page billing, or AI-agent access matter | Clean shots are billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not. |
| Browserless REST screenshot API | Hosted, stateless browser task per request | Screenshot requests requiring options such as full-page or selector capture | Each REST request performs one task and closes the session; it is not designed for persistent multi-step state. |
| ScreenshotOne | Hosted URL-to-image API | Direct GET or POST screenshot requests over HTTPS | Its published quotas and prices can change; check the current pricing page before choosing a plan. |
| Playwright or Puppeteer | Browser automation operated by your team, or connected to a managed browser | Teams that need browser automation rather than a single screenshot endpoint | This article does not compare current library features; choose based on the library’s own current documentation and your infrastructure requirements. |
1. ScreenshotNeo: the first API to try
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing.
Its API is suited to a URL-to-capture workflow, with controls including full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, viewport and device presets, retina scale, PDF options, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, hide selectors, wait conditions, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage API, and OpenAPI specification. It also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier. The MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

2. Browserless: hosted REST endpoint or managed browser
Browserless offers managed headless browsers, REST and GraphQL APIs for screenshots, PDFs, and scraping, and WebSocket connections for Puppeteer or Playwright. Its screenshot REST endpoint accepts a POST with a URL and screenshot options, and documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. The screenshot documentation covers full-page capture, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, quality, clipping, selector-based capture, and scrolling content into view. For an element capture, put the selector at the request-body top level. For lazy-loaded content, use scrollPage: true, optionally alongside fullPage: true.

The REST API is deliberately task-shaped: one request launches a browser, performs one action, then closes the session. Browserless identifies multi-step workflows and session persistence as limitations of REST; if your capture depends on state across interactions, evaluate its managed browser or BrowserQL interfaces instead. Its documentation describes cloud and self-host deployment routes, so infrastructure ownership also differs by deployment choice. Browserless documentation

3. ScreenshotOne: direct screenshot requests
ScreenshotOne accepts GET and POST requests over HTTPS and returns an image whose content type depends on the requested format; under relevant options it can also return raw HTML. Its getting-started documentation recommends HTTPS because plain HTTP does not encrypt requests and can expose access keys or other sensitive request data in transit. See the ScreenshotOne getting-started guide.

4. Playwright or Puppeteer: operate the browser workflow
Playwright and Puppeteer are browser-automation library choices, not hosted screenshot APIs by themselves. The available evidence here does not establish their current screenshot controls, supported browser versions, or setup differences, so verify those details in each project’s current documentation before selecting one. If you would rather connect automation code to a managed browser than maintain browser infrastructure, Browserless documents WebSocket connectivity for both libraries.

How to choose the right replacement
- One URL, one capture: start with a hosted screenshot API. Compare output format, required capture options, error reporting, caching, and how unsuccessful pages affect billing.
- Interactions or state across steps: avoid assuming a stateless screenshot endpoint will preserve a session. Browserless explicitly describes that limitation for REST; evaluate a managed browser interface or automation you operate.
- Infrastructure responsibility: a hosted API moves browser operation away from your application team. Browserless also documents self-host deployment; a self-operated library leaves browser deployment and maintenance to your team.
- Capture fidelity: test full-page and viewport captures, selector clipping, device scale, lazy-loaded images, consent overlays, and your own dynamic pages. Feature lists do not establish which service renders your target sites most faithfully.
- Cost: compare included monthly volume, request-rate limits, overage, cache treatment, and what happens to failed renders. Published quotas alone do not indicate your effective cost if your workload has many retries or cache hits.
Test candidates against your own pages
No comparable independent speed, screenshot-fidelity, uptime, or reliability benchmark is established by the cited documentation. Avoid selecting a performance winner based on unsupported rankings. A small trial using representative pages is more useful than a generic benchmark.
- Choose pages that reflect production: static content, client-rendered content, lazy-loaded images, a consent banner, authentication if relevant, and at least one page that may fail or challenge automated traffic.
- Fix the same target URL, viewport dimensions, device scale, output format, and wait condition for each candidate. Record any service-specific setting needed to reach comparable behavior.
- Compare image output for clipped content, missing images, overlays, fonts, and scroll height. For an element capture, check that the selector exists at capture time and that the resulting bounds match what your application expects.
- Record response time and outcome across repeated runs in your own environment. Keep failed and blocked pages in the record; success-only timing can hide operational differences.
- Estimate monthly cost from your expected request volume, cache behavior, rate limits, and the provider’s definition of a billable capture. Recheck pricing and quotas on the vendor’s current plan page.
Or skip the browser setup
Use ScreenshotNeo’s URL-to-image request when you want the API to handle browser rendering. The cURL example writes a WebP capture of Stripe to shot.webp; replace the URL and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and output options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent requests in Python and Node.js:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free tier includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common selection and capture problems
The replacement captures an incomplete page
Some content loads only after scrolling or after JavaScript has run. Use a full-page option where available and a scroll-to-load option for lazy content; Browserless documents scrollPage: true and optional combination with fullPage: true. If the page fills content after a known event, wait for a selector or suitable page condition rather than assuming navigation completion means visual readiness.
An element screenshot is blank or wrong
Confirm the selector is valid on the rendered page and that the element exists when capture occurs. Browserless expects the selector at the top level of the REST request body for element capture. If the element appears after client-side rendering, wait for it before capture.
A REST workflow loses authentication or interaction state
A task-shaped REST endpoint may create and close a browser for each request. Browserless states that its REST API does not provide session persistence or multi-step workflows; use a managed browser connection or another stateful workflow where session continuity is required.

Frequently asked questions
Is PhantomJS discontinued?
The project’s documented status is that development was suspended and its repository later archived. Its maintainer identified 2.1.1 as the last known stable release in a 2018 notice.
Can I use Browserless for a multi-step browser journey?
Not through its stateless REST screenshot endpoint as a persistent sequence. Its documentation points readers needing stateful or multi-step workflows toward managed browser or BrowserQL interfaces.
Does a published price prove which API is cheapest for my workload?
No. A useful comparison needs your capture volume, cache-hit rate, failures, request-rate requirements, and current overage terms in addition to the headline monthly quota.
