Xbox Wireless Controller: a familiar-layout alternative
The Xbox Wireless Controller is a practical comparison point if you prefer its layout or want a controller type specifically listed on a game page. Valve’s June 2024 update reported Xbox controllers in 59% of Steam controller sessions, and Elden Ring’s Steam page lists Xbox Controllers. Neither fact proves that an Xbox controller is the best fit for a particular player or that every Soulslike offers the same support.

What Steam controller labels do—and do not—tell you
Steam Input can provide compatibility and configuration options across many controllers. Valve said in June 2024 that Steam Input enabled more than 300 supported controllers, custom button bindings, and community configurations. The practical result still depends on the game’s integration and your setup.
A game’s “Full Controller Support” label is useful, but it does not mean every controller feature will be used. Valve’s November 2023 explanation states: “However, Full Controller Support does not necessarily mean that the game makes use of every feature on the controllers.” For example, do not take the label as confirmation that a game uses a controller’s extra buttons.

Valve also reported in its June 26, 2024 Steam Input update: “Since 2018, daily average controller use has tripled from ~5% to up to 15% of all sessions”. That describes Steam sessions overall, not Soulslike play specifically.

- Open the game’s Steam store page and look for its controller-support information. Elden Ring’s listing, for example, specifies Xbox Controllers and Full Controller Support.
- Check the controller manufacturer’s PC instructions for the exact model and connection type you plan to use. For the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless, 8BitDo documents connecting the adapter dock to a Windows PC.
- After connecting the controller, check whether the game recognizes it and whether its displayed button prompts match your controller. If you use Steam Input, review its configuration options for that game.
- If you want a different control arrangement, try remapping one action at a time and keep the layout you can use comfortably. A binding that works for one player may not suit another.
What the available comparisons cannot establish
The sources cited here do not establish a reliable comparative latency test, a controlled comfort comparison, durability rankings, or a Soulslike-specific study showing which controller performs best.
