If Google Maps freezes or lags in Android Auto, the symptom alone does not identify the cause. The trouble may be limited to Maps, affect Android Auto as a whole, or come from the phone-to-car connection or the vehicle’s infotainment system. Compare what stops responding, then work through the checks for your wired or wireless setup.
First identify what is actually freezing
When it happens, note whether the map image stops updating, route guidance or traffic information lags, touch input stops working, the entire Android Auto display becomes unresponsive, or the phone disconnects from the car. Also note whether it occurs every trip or only sometimes, and whether other Android Auto apps behave normally.

These comparisons can help narrow down where to investigate, but they are not a formal diagnostic test and do not prove a root cause. Google’s support pages do not identify one universal cause or fix for every Maps freeze or lag report.

Android Auto requires a compatible phone and car or receiver, as well as a working connection. The requirements differ between wired and wireless projection. Before changing settings, park the vehicle: Google says setup should be completed while the vehicle is in Park, with time allowed before driving.

If you connect by USB
- Check that the phone is running Android 9.0 or higher, has an active data plan, and is being used with a compatible car or receiver. Google’s wired setup also calls for a high-quality USB cable. Google’s Android Auto setup requirements.
- Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s settings, then restart the infotainment system. Google includes both checks in its Android Auto troubleshooting guidance.
- If Android Auto used to work and has stopped, try a known-good, high-quality USB data cable. Google says replacing the cable will likely fix a general Android Auto connection problem in this situation; that is not a guaranteed fix for Maps-specific lag.
- If you use an aftermarket receiver, check the receiver maker’s firmware guidance.
A cable is relevant only to a wired setup. It cannot resolve a wireless connection problem or establish that a Maps software issue is fixed.
If you connect wirelessly
- Confirm both the phone and car or stereo support wireless Android Auto. Compatibility varies by phone and vehicle.
- The phone needs an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup. Google’s setup guidance says: “For best results, keep your phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while you complete the setup.” Google Android Auto Help: Set up Android Auto.
- The first wireless connection pairs the phone and car by Bluetooth. If pairing or the connection itself is unreliable, investigate that connection before treating the map display as the sole problem.
- Restart the infotainment system, and check the receiver maker’s firmware guidance if the car uses an aftermarket unit.
Check whether the symptom is a known Maps issue
Google’s Android Auto Known Issues page, updated September 10, 2026, lists “[Maps] Google Maps turn-by-turn directions not showing” under “Recently addressed,” with a June 12, 2026 reference. That entry documents a specific directions-display issue; it does not show that the issue remains open or explain every case of freezing or lag. Check the current Android Auto Known Issues page for status and for a symptom that matches yours.

Google describes Android Auto navigation as supporting voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic, and lane guidance through Google Maps or another compatible navigation app. Typing a destination on the car display requires the vehicle to be in Park. Decide who to contact based on what the checks show
- If the connection and other Android Auto apps work but the problem appears limited to Google Maps, check Google’s known-issue status and use the app developer’s support route. Google’s Android Auto app guidance explains app support.
- If Android Auto itself fails to connect, the vehicle does not appear compatible, or the display or receiver behaves inconsistently, contact the vehicle or receiver manufacturer. For general connection checks, use Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting page.
Do not troubleshoot or enter destinations while driving. Complete checks and setup while parked.
