If you want an open-world game that makes the landscape the attraction, start with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for unrestricted discovery, Red Dead Redemption 2 for a living western world, Forza Horizon 5 for sightseeing from behind the wheel, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for quest-filled wandering, or Ghost of Tsushima for cinematic samurai scenery. Each offers substantial outdoor travel, but none is permanently bright or free of danger: “daylight exploration” means readable landscapes and satisfying travel, not the absence of night, combat, or darker missions.

Open-world games rarely keep every moment in sunshine. A day/night cycle, a cave, a dungeon or a story mission can temporarily change the mood. The useful distinction is whether the game’s normal travel loop lets you read the terrain, appreciate the view and make progress without constantly being pushed through cramped or frightening spaces.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Readable outdoor space: You can see where you are going and use landmarks to choose your next direction.
- Low-friction sightseeing: Travel can be enjoyable even when you are not completing a mission.
- Control over pace: You can pause a quest, take a detour or stop to observe the environment.
- A manageable pressure level: Encounters may happen, but the game does not make uninterrupted combat the only way to move forward.
On that definition, Breath of the Wild is the clearest fit for freedom, Forza Horizon 5 for bright scenery with almost no character combat, and Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim and Ghost of Tsushima for players who accept a stronger story or combat presence.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — best for curiosity-led exploration
Why it suits a sightseeing-first player
Breath of the Wild makes the act of choosing a direction feel like the main game. You can climb toward a visible landmark, glide after reaching a high point, or investigate something that catches your eye rather than following a prescribed sequence. That loop is why GameSpot’s 2026 coverage treats it as a standout open-world exploration game, and why a PlayStation open-world editorial places Nintendo’s approach among the major examples of large-scale exploration.
The important benefit is not simply that the world is large. It is that the game repeatedly gives you a reason to look beyond the current objective. A ridge, distant structure or unusual point of interest can become a destination on its own. If you prefer setting your own agenda to clearing a checklist, this is the strongest recommendation in the group.

What the travel loop feels like
Climbing and gliding turn the landscape into a set of decisions. A high route may reveal more of the world; a glide can convert that view into a new destination. You are not limited to a single road, so exploration often begins with a visual question: What is that landmark, and can I reach it from here?
That freedom also means the game does not constantly tell you what the “correct” activity is. Players who enjoy wandering will find that liberating. Players who want a dense schedule of marked tasks may need to supply their own goals.
Limits to the daylight promise
This is an exploration-first adventure, not a peaceful walking simulator. The world contains danger, and the atmosphere can shift as you move through it. Choose it for agency and experimentation rather than a guarantee of uninterrupted calm.

Why the journey matters
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the choice for players who want the trip between objectives to feel meaningful. GameSpot’s 2026 description emphasizes its large western setting and the many activities available between story missions. Riding through open country, passing through towns and observing wildlife can become the point of a session instead of a delay before the next mission.
The world is built around contrast: broad outdoor views, populated settlements and stretches of country where the pace naturally slows. That makes it a strong match for scenic travel, especially if you like watching a setting change as you move through it rather than jumping directly from one activity to another.
How to play it as a sightseeing game
- Leave room between objectives. Do not treat every ride as a loading screen between missions; let the route itself be part of the session.
- Use the world’s side activities. The game offers many things to do between story missions, so a detour can be a complete activity rather than wasted time.
- Spend time in both country and towns. The western setting’s appeal comes from moving between open land and inhabited places.
The qualification that matters
This is not a light, family-friendly sightseeing sandbox. Its tone is mature and its story includes violence. If your priority is avoiding combat or heavy themes, choose Forza Horizon 5 instead. If you want an immersive landscape and accept a serious western story, Red Dead Redemption 2 offers the richest sense of travel in this list.
Forza Horizon 5 — best for vehicle-based sightseeing
Why it is the least combat-oriented option
Forza Horizon 5 translates open-world exploration into driving. Tom’s Guide’s 2022 description places it in Mexico, with hundreds of vehicles, cities, deserts and ancient ruins to drive through; GameSpot also identifies it as an open-world Mexico driving experience. You can move quickly, cover a lot of visual ground and keep the focus on roads, terrain and scenery rather than character combat.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

What kind of player should choose it
- Choose it if speed matters. Driving provides immediate movement through the landscape without the slower, deliberate travel of a walking or horseback adventure.
- Choose it if you prefer vehicles to avatars. Your relationship with the world is built around cars and roads rather than a character’s equipment or combat abilities.
- Choose it if online competition is optional for you. The recommendation is for sightseeing first; online competition is available but not required to appreciate the setting.
What it does not provide
This is not a quest-driven fantasy or western role-playing game. If you want caves, settlements, side quests and character development, Skyrim is a better fit. If you want the most continuous bright-scenery loop with the least character combat, however, Forza Horizon 5 is the most direct answer.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — best for quest-rich wandering
Why the sandbox remains compelling
Skyrim combines open-ended travel with a large supply of reasons to stop. GameSpot presents it as a major open-world option, while Whatoplay lists it among highly rated PC open-world games with a broad platform history. Its defining strength for this audience is the ability to leave the main quest, enter caves or settlements, discover side quests and build a character over a long campaign.
That structure suits players who want exploration to produce stories. A detour is not only a view; it can lead to a new quest, location or character-building decision. You can alternate between outdoor travel and more directed objectives without abandoning the larger world.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow it differs from Breath of the Wild
Breath of the Wild puts curiosity and physical access first: climb, glide and investigate. Skyrim puts quest density and character progression first. You wander because you might find a settlement, cave or side quest that expands your campaign. Pick Skyrim when you want your sightseeing to feed a long-form role-playing sandbox rather than remain mostly self-directed discovery.
Why “daylight” needs a qualifier
Skyrim includes night cycles, dungeons and darker fantasy content. It is daylight-friendly, not permanently bright. A session can begin with an open-air trek and end underground or in a dangerous encounter. That contrast is part of its identity, but it may disappoint anyone specifically avoiding darkness or fantasy threat.
When shopping, search for Skyrim Special Edition and then verify the edition, platform and included content in the current listing. Platform history is broad, but exact availability depends on the store and version you are considering.

Ghost of Tsushima — best for cinematic landscape traversal
Why the scenery stands out
Ghost of Tsushima is for players who want travel to look deliberately composed. GameSpot identifies it as a leading samurai open-world game, and PlayStation’s official editorial includes it in the current PlayStation open-world context. Its strongest fit here is the combination of fields, forests and coastal landscapes with a focused combat system and strong visual direction.
Rather than emphasizing unrestricted experimentation above all else, it presents a more directed journey through a carefully shaped world. The result is a cinematic form of sightseeing: movement through a landscape is closely tied to the game’s samurai setting and story.
Who will enjoy its pace
- Players who value composition. The appeal is not only how far you can go, but how the world frames fields, woodland and coast as parts of a coherent visual experience.
- Players comfortable with combat. Exploration is paired with a focused combat system, so this is not a no-conflict travel game.
- Players who prefer a directed adventure. Compared with Breath of the Wild, it offers less of a pure “choose any experiment” identity and more of a cinematic route through its setting.
Choose it when visual presentation and samurai atmosphere matter more than the broadest possible sandbox.

If maximum freedom is your priority
Pick Breath of the Wild. Its climb-and-glide movement and willingness to let you investigate points of interest without a rigid route make it the clearest choice for curiosity-led discovery.
If you want travel to feel like an activity
Pick Red Dead Redemption 2. The western setting, wildlife, towns and between-mission activities give riding its own purpose. Accept the mature tone and violence before choosing it for a relaxed session.
If you want the least character combat
Pick Forza Horizon 5. You explore from a vehicle, move quickly through Mexican cities, deserts and ruins, and can treat online competition as optional.

If you want the most quests and character building
Pick Skyrim. Its caves, settlements, side quests and long campaign make wandering productive, but night cycles, dungeons and darker fantasy content are unavoidable parts of the world.
If presentation matters most
Pick Ghost of Tsushima. Its fields, forests and coastal areas are presented with a strong cinematic identity, balanced by a focused combat system.
Common mistakes when choosing a daylight-friendly open world
Confusing “bright scenery” with “no danger”
A sunny landscape can still contain combat, mature themes or sudden shifts into darker spaces. Read the tone qualification for each game, not just the description of its scenery.

Assuming every open world offers the same freedom
Breath of the Wild is built around self-directed traversal. Red Dead Redemption 2 makes travel immersive within a more authored western story. Ghost of Tsushima emphasizes cinematic direction. Skyrim uses quests and character building to structure wandering. Forza Horizon 5 turns exploration into driving. “Open world” describes the format, not one uniform play style.
Ignoring the traversal method
Decide whether you want to climb and glide, ride, drive, walk through a quest sandbox or move through a cinematic samurai landscape. The same scenery can feel relaxing or tedious depending on how much control you want over speed and route.
Buying the wrong edition or platform listing
Edition names and platform catalogs change. Use the specific anchors Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch and Skyrim Special Edition when searching, then confirm the current store page, region, platform and included content. Apply the same check to the other three games rather than assuming an older listing is still current.
A practical decision checklist
- Define your main activity. Select discovery, horseback travel, driving, questing or cinematic traversal.
- Set your combat tolerance. Choose Forza Horizon 5 if you want to minimize character combat; choose the other four only if their stated combat or mature-tone qualifications fit.
- Decide how much direction you want. Choose Breath of the Wild for the loosest route structure, or Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want the world to generate more explicit activities.
- Check darkness tolerance. If night cycles, dungeons or darker fantasy content are deal-breakers, do not treat Skyrim as a pure sightseeing game.
- Verify the current platform listing. Editions and availability vary by region and can change after an editorial recommendation is published.
Final recommendation by player type
Start with Breath of the Wild if your ideal evening is choosing a distant landmark and figuring out how to reach it. Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if the pleasure is inhabiting a western landscape where wildlife, towns and unplanned activities make travel worthwhile. Choose Forza Horizon 5 if you want bright Mexican scenery from a car and would rather race than fight. Choose Skyrim if every detour should potentially become a quest, dungeon or character-building opportunity. Choose Ghost of Tsushima if you want the most deliberately cinematic combination of outdoor scenery and focused samurai combat.
