What counts as romance in an open-world crime game?

1. Cyberpunk 2077: best overall romance system
Cyberpunk 2077 is the clearest answer to the question because romance is integrated with exploration, side quests and the protagonist’s identity. You are not simply selecting a date from a menu. You meet characters through their own missions, make decisions that reveal your priorities, and then live with the consequences.
Four major long-term routes
The game has four major romance routes: Judy, Panam, River and Kerry. Each is tied to a character-specific quest chain rather than a single interaction. Eligibility depends partly on how you present V and partly on what you say and do during that character’s missions.
Those compatibility rules are important before you commit to a route. The game does not treat every protagonist configuration as compatible with every character, and a choice that seems harmless in a conversation can close a route. The result feels more like a relationship with boundaries than a universal reward for selecting flirtatious dialogue.
Why the routes feel persistent
Romance does not necessarily end when the defining quest chain is complete. Completed relationships can continue through apartment Romance Hangouts, giving the characters a presence beyond their introductory missions. That persistence is a major reason this game outperforms lighter dating systems: the relationship becomes part of the protagonist’s ongoing life in the city.
Brief encounters are not the same thing
The game also contains shorter encounters, including Meredith. Treat those as optional experiences rather than additional full romance routes. Counting every flirtation would make the romance offering look broader than it is and would obscure the four sustained arcs that define the system.

- Check your character fit early. Your V presentation affects which of the four major routes can develop. Decide whether you want to pursue a particular character before investing heavily in unrelated choices.
- Complete the character’s side missions. The romance is carried by a quest chain, so skipping or abandoning those missions can remove the opportunity entirely.
- Read consequential dialogue carefully. Supporting a character’s goals generally keeps the relationship moving; dismissive, hostile or contradictory choices can fail the route.
- Keep a manual save before major conversations. Because choices can be missable, a separate save lets you explore a different response without replaying a large section of the open world.
- Return after the main arc. If the route is completed, check the apartment Romance Hangouts rather than assuming the relationship has disappeared.
What Phantom Liberty changes
Phantom Liberty does not add a fifth romance route. It adds dialogue to existing romances, so it can deepen continuity for a relationship you already established, but it should not be purchased with the expectation of a new partner-selection system.

2. Grand Theft Auto IV: best traditional GTA dating layer
Grand Theft Auto IV approaches relationships from a more grounded, activity-based angle. Niko can use the game’s internet and dating sites to arrange dates and receive relationship-oriented messages. The phone and scheduling systems make dating feel like a recognizable part of life in Liberty City, not just a dialogue branch hidden inside a mission.
How the dating loop works
The basic loop is straightforward: use the available online dating services, make contact, arrange a meeting and then spend time together. The activity-based design gives you a social routine alongside robberies, jobs and travel through the city. It is a good fit if the fantasy you want is a criminal protagonist trying to maintain a personal life.
The important limitation is depth. Dating in GTA IV is lighter than the multi-mission companion arcs in Cyberpunk 2077. The emphasis is on arranging and completing dates rather than navigating a large set of relationship-defining quests with strong compatibility gates.
Why it still works for crime-game fans
The dating layer matches the game’s tone. Niko’s contacts, messages and appointments sit inside a grounded Liberty City crime story, so the contrast between ordinary social plans and criminal work is part of the appeal. You are not leaving the crime game to enter a separate romance simulator; you are fitting social activity around the same open-world schedule.
Set the right expectation
Pick GTA IV when you want classic GTA atmosphere, phone-based social scheduling and a conventional dating activity. Do not choose it expecting a broad, branching companion-romance framework in which every major partner has a long personal questline. Its dating system is a valuable side layer, not the central emotional architecture of the campaign.

3. Red Dead Redemption 2: best outlaw relationships, weakest romance fit
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an outstanding choice when “relationship” means loyalty, trust, family-like bonds and the gradual development of people living under pressure. It is a less suitable answer when the reader specifically wants several selectable romantic partners.
Relationships built around the gang
You play outlaw Arthur Morgan in a large open world set in a fictionalized 1899 United States. Arthur’s strongest connections are with gang members, companions, family-like figures and other story characters. These relationships develop through shared danger, disagreements, dependence and the consequences of the gang’s choices.
That structure creates emotional weight without presenting a broad dating menu. The game asks how Arthur treats the people around him and what he is willing to sacrifice, rather than which partner he wants to schedule for a date.
Why it is still a strong recommendation
The outlaw setting gives every relationship practical stakes. Trust affects whether people stand together, leave, betray one another or remember Arthur differently. Character development is woven into travel, camp life and story missions, making the social world feel inseparable from the criminal role-play.
Who should avoid it?
Do not buy Red Dead Redemption 2 expecting a dating simulator or a set of romance routes comparable to Cyberpunk 2077. Choose it for immersion, loyalty and the slow-burn drama of an outlaw community. Its relationship strength is breadth and emotional realism, not partner selection.

This is the best pick when your main question is, “Can my choices determine who my character falls for?” You get four major routes, identity-based eligibility, quest consequences and post-quest hangouts. The trade-off is that the system demands attention: routes are missable, and compatibility rules mean you cannot assume every character is available to every version of V.

Choose Grand Theft Auto IV for dating as a side activity
This is the better match when you want a traditional GTA crime story with explicit internet dating, phone messages and scheduled outings. It asks less of you than a branching romance system and gives you an accessible social routine between criminal missions.
