Best Open-Source Tools for Scheduled Chromium Website Screenshots

Use shot-scraper with a scheduler for a simple screenshot archive; choose Playwright for scripted captures and visual comparisons, or Puppeteer for Chromium-oriented automation.

For a repeatable screenshot archive, use shot-scraper with a recurring scheduler such as GitHub Actions. Choose Playwright when you need custom browser scripting or visual-regression checks, and consider Puppeteer for Chromium-oriented automation. The browser tool captures the page; a separate scheduler launches that capture at intervals.

Which tool should you choose?

ScreenshotNeo A hosted screenshot API when you want to avoid maintaining browser setup. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents. It is a hosted service, not an open-source browser tool. Its free plan includes 1,000 shots per month; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
shot-scraper + scheduler CLI-based screenshot archives and repeatable multi-URL captures. URL and element captures, multi-capture configuration, JavaScript, and a documented GitHub Actions workflow. The scheduler is a separate component. The documented workflow can commit captures to a repository, which may not suit every storage or review process.
Playwright + scheduler Custom browser flows, full-page or element capture, and visual checks. Page screenshots, full-page capture, buffer output, locator screenshots, and screenshot baseline assertions through Playwright Test. Visual comparisons can change with the runner environment, so keep it consistent with the baseline.
Puppeteer + scheduler Chromium-oriented automation that needs page or element screenshots. Its screenshot guide documents selected-element capture and says Puppeteer attempts to scroll a hidden element into view. The available documentation here does not establish a comprehensive comparison with Playwright for features, language, maintenance, or speed.

These are use-case recommendations based on documented capabilities, not controlled performance benchmarks. The cited documentation does not establish project license details, release cadence, or which tool is fastest or most reliable; check each project’s current documentation and licensing before adopting it.

Separate capture from scheduling

A screenshot library or command-line tool controls Chromium and saves an image. A scheduler—such as local cron or a CI workflow—starts that capture on a recurring basis. shot-scraper’s documented GitHub Actions example makes this split explicit: install the package and browser dependency, capture the URLs configured in shots.yml, and optionally commit the results.

For a simple archive, decide where the output belongs before automating it. Committing images to a repository is one documented option, not a requirement; generated screenshots can create large or noisy changes if the pages change often.

Schedule shot-scraper with GitHub Actions

The shot-scraper manual includes a workflow pattern for recurring captures. Adapt its documented example to your repository, capture configuration, and preferred output handling:

  1. Add a shots.yml file describing the pages or elements to capture, using shot-scraper’s documented configuration format.
  2. Create a workflow under .github/workflows/ that installs Python, shot-scraper, and its browser dependency, then runs the captures defined in shots.yml.
  3. Add a schedule trigger with a cron expression for the desired recurrence. GitHub Actions schedules use UTC by default.
  4. Choose whether the workflow should commit the generated screenshots, upload them elsewhere, or use another repository-specific output process. The documented example commits output; adapt permissions and storage to your needs.
  5. Run the workflow manually or wait for its scheduled run, then inspect the action log and generated files to confirm that the pages rendered and the outputs landed in the intended location.

GitHub’s documentation says scheduled workflows run only on the default branch. High load can delay a run, and sufficiently high load can cause queued scheduled jobs to be dropped. Its documented shortest scheduling interval is five minutes; this is a GitHub Actions detail, not a universal cron limit. Treat scheduled actions as recurring automation, not precision-time monitoring. See GitHub’s workflow events documentation for current syntax and caveats.

When Playwright is the better fit

Use Playwright when the capture is one step in a larger browser script: for example, a page requires interaction before it reaches the state you want, or you want to compare a capture with a known reference. Its screenshot documentation covers page screenshots, full-page capture, buffers, and locator screenshots. Playwright Test also supports screenshot comparisons against reference images.

For a recurring job, put the script or test in a scheduler such as CI or cron. Keep the runner configuration stable if you rely on visual diffs. Playwright warns that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors; its guidance is to run tests in the same environment where the baselines were generated. A difference can therefore come from the capture environment as well as a website change. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.

When Puppeteer is the better fit

Puppeteer is a reasonable choice for Chromium-oriented browser automation when its API suits your existing scripts. Its official screenshot guide documents both page and selected-element screenshots. For an element that is outside the current viewport, Puppeteer attempts to scroll it into view before capture. Pair it with the scheduler you already operate; the screenshot guide describes capture behavior, not a complete recurring-run system.

Choose between Puppeteer and Playwright based on the browser workflow and project requirements you need, rather than assuming a speed or reliability advantage: the cited material does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark.

What to compare before implementing

  • Capture target: Decide whether you need the visible viewport, the full scrollable page, or one selected element. Playwright and Puppeteer document these capture modes; shot-scraper documents URL, selector, and configured multi-captures.
  • Page state: Identify whether the page needs JavaScript, authentication, interaction, or a wait before it is ready. shot-scraper documents JavaScript and authentication options; confirm the exact workflow and options in the current manual.
  • Schedule: Choose local cron, CI, or another recurring runner based on its timing guarantees and operational fit. A capture tool does not automatically provide a reliable clock.
  • Output and review: Decide where images will be stored and who will review changes. A saved screenshot is not itself a visual-regression check.
  • Repeatability: For baseline comparisons, use a consistent browser and runner environment, and account for scheduler delays and output storage.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a hosted screenshot API and MCP server, not an open-source capture tool. It can be useful if you would rather call an endpoint than install and maintain Chromium in your own workflow. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.

For example, one GET request captures a URL as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and parameters. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Troubleshooting recurring captures

  • The scheduled run did not start on time: GitHub Actions may delay scheduled workflows during high load, and queued runs can be dropped. Check the Actions history and logs; do not use this scheduling mechanism where exact start times are essential.
  • The workflow runs locally but not from the schedule: Confirm the workflow is on the repository’s default branch and that the cron expression uses the intended UTC time.
  • No screenshot or an outdated image appears: Inspect the workflow log for installation or capture errors, verify the paths and URLs in shots.yml, and check that the workflow’s output step saves or commits files where expected.
  • A visual comparison fails without an obvious page change: Compare the browser version and runner environment with the one used to create the baseline. Rendering can vary across operating systems and settings.
  • An element capture misses the intended content: Verify the selector and page state before capturing. If the element starts outside the viewport, Puppeteer’s guide says it attempts to scroll it into view; check the selected element and resulting image if the output is still unexpected.
