If you mean a command-line tool for pasting a Windows screenshot into a WSL terminal, the project documented for that job is wsl-screenshot-cli—not ScreenshotMachine. The ScreenshotMachine GitHub example describes a Node.js package for calling its screenshot and PDF APIs; the sources reviewed do not document a ScreenshotMachine CLI for Windows or WSL. The two products serve different purposes, so check the name before installing anything.
First, identify which tool you need
wsl-screenshot-cli is a separate project by Nailuu. Its README describes a utility that monitors the Windows clipboard for screenshots so they can be pasted into a WSL terminal as file paths, while retaining Windows paste behavior. That description is the project’s stated behavior, not an independent test.

ScreenshotMachine’s located GitHub example is different: it documents a Node.js package installed with npm install screenshotmachine for calling ScreenshotMachine’s website screenshot and PDF APIs using an account customer key (and a secret phrase where applicable). That is an API integration, not documentation for the Windows clipboard utility or evidence of a standalone WSL CLI. Installing WSL alone installs neither one.
Install and check WSL
Microsoft Learn documents wsl --install for Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later, and Windows 11. If WSL is already installed, check that your Linux distribution uses WSL 2 before proceeding.

- Open PowerShell as an administrator and run
wsl --install. - Restart Windows if prompted, then launch the installed Linux distribution and create its Linux username and password.
- In PowerShell, run
wsl --list --verbose. Confirm that your distribution appears and its VERSION column shows2. If it shows1, consult Microsoft’s WSL guidance for converting the distribution to WSL 2 before continuing.
Microsoft’s one-command setup covers WSL; it does not install wsl-screenshot-cli.
Install wsl-screenshot-cli from WSL
The project’s documented quick-install command downloads the latest binary into ~/.local/bin/; this route does not require installing Go. Run it inside your WSL distribution, not in PowerShell:

- Check that Windows interop is enabled and that
powershell.execan be found from WSL throughPATH. These are prerequisites listed by the project. - In a WSL shell, run
curl -fsSL https://nailu.dev/wscli/install.sh | bash. - Try
wsl-screenshot-cli statusto inspect the monitor. To run it as a background monitor, usewsl-screenshot-cli start --daemon. - Copy a screenshot in Windows, then paste into the WSL terminal where you need its file path. The project says it sets multiple clipboard formats to support WSL path pasting while preserving image/file paste behavior in Windows apps; exact behavior can depend on your setup.
The install command executes a remote shell script. If you want to inspect what it will do before running it, download the script for review instead of piping it directly into Bash. The repository also documents wsl-screenshot-cli update for updating to the latest GitHub release, and wsl-screenshot-cli stop to stop the monitor.

The project lists Go 1.25 or later only for building from source. Go is not needed for the documented quick-install route. Follow the project’s current repository instructions for a source build, since build steps and release details may change.

wsl-screenshot-cli: command not found: The project notes that~/.local/bin/may not be onPATHin a non-login shell. For Bash, add this line to~/.bashrc, then open a new shell or runsource ~/.bashrc:export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH".- PowerShell cannot be invoked or the monitor cannot interact with Windows: Check that WSL interop is enabled and that
powershell.exeis accessible from the WSL shell throughPATH, as the project requires. - The distribution is WSL 1: The project lists WSL 2 as a prerequisite. Check the version with
wsl --list --verbosein PowerShell and use Microsoft’s WSL conversion guidance. - You expected a website screenshot file: This clipboard utility is for making a screenshot already on the Windows clipboard pasteable into WSL as a path. It is not ScreenshotMachine’s API client. For ScreenshotMachine API use, consult its package example and account documentation rather than treating this utility as its CLI.
- Install or command behavior differs from these steps: The utility’s install script, binary and requirements can change. Check the Nailuu repository’s current README and release instructions before retrying.

Can the WSL clipboard utility capture a website by URL?
The documented purpose is to make screenshots copied in Windows pasteable as paths in WSL, not to capture a website from a URL.
