Choose VLC for the broadest format and remote-playback support; Soul Searching for Android Auto and advanced library tools; Lotus for privacy-first organization; Fossify for a practical ad-free offline player; and Vibe, Gramophone or Void Player for simpler local libraries. All seven are open-source Android players, but they are not interchangeable. Some handle remote locations, while others deliberately stay offline. The right choice depends on your files, Android version, metadata needs, lyrics, ReplayGain, car integration and privacy expectations.

Quick recommendations

Best for Pick Why
Most formats and remote playback VLC Plays a broad range of audio and container formats from local or remote locations, and also handles video.
Android Auto and advanced library workflows Soul Searching Combines Android Auto, multiple queues, listening statistics, synchronized lyrics, metadata writing and folder management.
Privacy defaults, ReplayGain and organization Lotus Network access is off by default, music remains on-device unless you enable lookups, and it includes smart shuffle, lyrics and playlist backup.
Ad-free offline playback with utility features Fossify Music Player Offers equalizer presets, sleep timer, widgets, playlists and metadata editing without third-party data sharing.
Minimalist offline playback Vibe or Gramophone Both focus on local files and low-complexity interfaces; Gramophone adds extensive lyric and ReplayGain support.
Modern interface and private playback Void Player Uses Media3 playback, dynamic album-art colors, synchronized lyrics and an explicit no-ads, no-trackers, no-analytics policy.

These players are for music you already have on your phone, shared storage or another location they can access. They are not substitutes for a subscription streaming catalog. Gramophone explicitly does not stream or download music.

What “open-source music player” means here

Each app in this guide publishes source code under a recognized free or open-source license. That makes the code inspectable and allows community development, but it does not guarantee identical privacy behavior, feature depth or update cadence. Read each app’s permissions and repository notes, especially if you enable network services such as lyrics or metadata lookups.

The listings reviewed for these apps show releases during 2026, but Android compatibility is different for every project. A current release can still exclude an older phone, so check the package page immediately before installation.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

VLC: the safest all-purpose choice

Why choose it

VLC is the strongest general recommendation when your library contains unusual files, you need remote playback, or you want one player for music and video. Its listing describes local and remote playback and support for a wide range of formats and containers, including MP3, AAC, FLAC, Opus, Vorbis and WAV.

The practical advantage is breadth: you are less likely to discover that a file will not open simply because it uses a less common codec or container. Remote playback also separates VLC from the strictly local players in this guide. It can be useful when your audio is exposed through a network location rather than copied to device storage.

Compatibility and license

The listed VLC 3.7.2 release was added on October 16, 2026 and requires Android 4.2 or newer. It is licensed GPL-3.0-only. The release date and minimum version apply to that listing; future builds can change the requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs

VLC is designed as a broad media player rather than a specialized music-library manager. If your priority is listening statistics, deeply managed queues, smart shuffle, ReplayGain or extensive tag workflows, one of the dedicated players below may fit better.

Soul Searching: best for Android Auto and serious library management

What it adds

Soul Searching is the clearest choice when your player must do more than start a file. It supports playlists, multiple play queues, listening statistics, synchronized lyrics, metadata writing, folder management and Android Auto. Those features make it suitable for people who organize large collections, switch between queues and want their listening history represented inside the app.

Android Auto support is particularly important for drivers: it gives Soul Searching a role that a minimalist local player may not fill. Synchronized lyrics and metadata writing also reduce the need to switch to separate tools while maintaining a library.

Cloudy and network access

The project describes Cloudy as an alpha self-hosted cloud system for accessing music across desktop, web and Android. Treat that as an experimental, self-hosted option rather than a mature hosted streaming service. You would need to operate the system yourself and accept the limitations of alpha software.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Compatibility and license

Version 0.16.0 was added October 12, 2026, requires Android 8.0 or newer and is licensed GPL-3.0-or-later. If your phone runs Android 7 or earlier, this release is not a match regardless of its feature set.

Lotus: privacy-first organization with ReplayGain

Why it stands out

Lotus is designed around Material You and local-library control. Network access is off by default, and music stays on the device unless you opt in to external lyrics or metadata lookups. That default is useful if you want a player that does not contact online services during ordinary playback.

Its playback and organization tools include MP3, FLAC, OGG, OPUS, WAV and M4A support; ReplayGain; smart shuffle; synchronized lyrics; playlists; M3U and JSON backup; metadata editing; and MusicBrainz lookups when enabled. ReplayGain can make albums with different mastering levels sound more consistent without permanently changing the files.

When to enable lookups

Use the opt-in lookups when accurate tags or lyrics are worth the network request. Leave them disabled if keeping the library entirely local is more important. Because the default is offline, you can make that decision deliberately instead of discovering background connections after installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility and license

Version 1.9.2-community was added October 12, 2026, requires Android 7.0 or newer and is GPL-3.0-only.

Fossify Music Player: practical offline features without ads

Core tools

Fossify Music Player is aimed at straightforward offline playback. Its listing documents playlists, metadata editing, an equalizer with presets, a sleep timer, customizable widgets, a dark theme and offline operation. These are the features to prioritize if you want control from the home screen, a timed stop at bedtime or quick sound-shaping presets without installing separate utilities.

The project describes itself as ad-free and states that it does not share data with third parties. That is a more specific privacy statement than simply saying an app is open source: it addresses both advertising and data-sharing behavior described by the listing.

Best fit

Choose Fossify when you want a conventional player with useful extras but do not need remote playback, Android Auto or a self-hosted cloud workflow. Its emphasis is local convenience rather than an elaborate media-server model.

Vibe: fast, minimalist playback for large local libraries

Library handling

Vibe is described as a fast, minimalist local player that is 100% offline. It provides album and artist navigation, playlists and JSON backup/import. The listing says its rendering is intended for libraries with thousands of songs, making it a sensible candidate when a collection is too large for a bare folder browser but you still want a restrained interface.

Ad-free playback and JSON backup make it easy to move or restore the app’s organization without introducing an online account. The listing excerpt does not state a minimum Android version, so verify the package requirement for your device before installing.

Trade-offs

Vibe’s appeal is low complexity. The available description does not document Android Auto, ReplayGain, synchronized lyrics, metadata writing or remote playback, so do not select it expecting those specialized functions. Choose it for navigation, playlists and offline listening rather than for a feature-heavy workstation.

License and update

Version 0.7.0 was added September 15, 2026 and is GPL-3.0-or-later.

Gramophone: minimalist design with strong lyrics and ReplayGain support

Supported playback and lyrics

Gramophone is a simple offline player with a minimalistic design. It supports MP3, FLAC, OGG, OPUS, M4A, MKA and WAV, plus folder browsing and playlists. For lyrics, it supports LRC, TTML and SRT files and karaoke synchronization. It also supports ReplayGain 2.0 and can work with third-party equalizers.

That combination makes Gramophone unusually capable for an app whose stated goal is simplicity. If synchronized lyrics or ReplayGain matter more than remote playback or Android Auto, it deserves close attention.

Explicitly local-only

Gramophone does not stream or download music. Plan to provide your own files through local or shared storage. This is a limitation if you expect a built-in catalog, but a benefit if you want a player with no streaming account or download subsystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility and license

Version 1.1.1 was added July 28, 2026, requires Android 5.0 or newer and is GPLv3-or-later.

Void Player: modern visuals with Media3 playback

Interface and playback engine

Void Player targets a modern, high-performance experience. Its listing highlights dynamic colors derived from album art, Media3 ExoPlayer playback, battery-efficient scanning, synchronized lyrics and playlists. Media3 is Android’s current playback framework, while battery-efficient scanning matters when a large library is first indexed or rescanned.

Privacy posture

The project explicitly states that it has no ads, trackers or analytics. That is a clear fit for listeners who want a contemporary interface without behavioral measurement built into the app.

Compatibility and license

Version 2.2 was added August 21, 2026, requires Android 8.0 or newer and uses the MIT license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs

Void Player is a good choice when visual polish, efficient scanning and private playback are your priorities. The listing does not document remote playback, Android Auto, ReplayGain or metadata editing, so choose another app when one of those is essential.

How to choose by your actual listening setup

If you keep music on a phone or microSD card

Start with Fossify, Vibe, Gramophone, Lotus or Void Player. These are built around local files. On phones that support microSD, expandable storage can hold a larger collection; verify the phone’s supported card capacity and speed before buying one. The apps read audio from local or shared storage, so Android’s storage permissions and your folder organization affect what appears in the library.

If your files are on a network location

Choose VLC first because its listing explicitly supports remote playback. Soul Searching’s Cloudy is a separate alpha self-hosted option for cross-device access, not the same thing as a turnkey streaming service.

If you drive with Android Auto

Choose Soul Searching. It is the only player in this set whose listing explicitly documents Android Auto support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If volume differences between albums bother you

Choose Lotus for ReplayGain, or Gramophone for ReplayGain 2.0. ReplayGain adjusts playback level metadata rather than re-encoding your files. If you use another player, check whether it has equivalent support before assuming albums will be normalized.

If synchronized lyrics are essential

Soul Searching, Lotus, Gramophone and Void Player document synchronized lyrics. Gramophone additionally identifies LRC, TTML and SRT formats and karaoke synchronization, while Lotus can retrieve lyrics only when you opt in to its lookup services.

If you want the fewest online connections

Lotus has network access off by default and keeps music on-device unless you enable lookups. Fossify states that it does not share data with third parties, and Void Player states that it has no ads, trackers or analytics. Vibe and Gramophone describe offline operation; Gramophone explicitly excludes streaming and downloads.

Installation and first-library checklist

  1. Confirm Android compatibility. Match your phone to the minimum version in the table. VLC reaches the oldest supported version in this group at Android 4.2, while Fossify, Soul Searching and Void Player require Android 8.0 or newer.
  2. Install from a trusted package source. Review the project’s current listing, license and release date before installing. Versions can change after the dates shown here.
  3. Place files in a predictable folder. Keep album folders and filenames organized before the first scan. Folder-based players are easier to troubleshoot when your hierarchy is consistent.
  4. Grant only the storage access required. Android may ask for permission to read shared audio. Denying it will leave the library empty even when files are present.
  5. Run the initial scan. Large collections can take time. Void Player specifically describes battery-efficient scanning; other apps may behave differently during indexing.
  6. Check tags and artwork. If titles, artists or albums are wrong, use an app with metadata editing such as Soul Searching, Lotus or Fossify, or correct the files with a separate tag editor.
  7. Configure optional online features deliberately. Leave Lotus lookups disabled for a fully local setup. Enable lyrics or MusicBrainz access only when you accept the required network requests.
  8. Test your important files. Open representative MP3, FLAC, OPUS, WAV or other formats from your collection. VLC is the best fallback for unusual codecs or containers.
  9. Back up playlists. Vibe supports JSON backup/import, while Lotus supports M3U and JSON backup. Use those functions before changing phones or reorganizing folders.

Common problems and fixes

The player cannot see music

  • Confirm that Android storage permission is granted.
  • Check that files are in a folder the app scans and that they are not hidden by a system marker.
  • Trigger a library rescan after copying new files.
  • Open one file directly in VLC to distinguish a scanning problem from a codec problem.

A file plays silently or fails

  • Try VLC, which documents the broadest format and container coverage in this group.
  • Verify that the file itself plays on another device; a damaged file cannot be repaired by changing players.
  • For unusual formats, convert a copy to a widely supported format such as FLAC, AAC, MP3 or WAV.

Lyrics do not synchronize

  • Check that the lyric file format is supported. Gramophone documents LRC, TTML and SRT.
  • Ensure the lyric filename matches the audio filename when using sidecar files.
  • For Lotus, remember that online lookup is opt-in and disabled by default.

Playlists disappeared after moving files

  • Restore the original folder paths when possible.
  • Use Vibe’s JSON or Lotus’s M3U/JSON backup to migrate playlists instead of rebuilding them manually.
  • Rescan after moving files so the app can update its index.

What is not established by these listings

The project pages reviewed here do not provide authoritative market-share, download-count or adoption statistics, so no player can be called the most popular on that basis. They also do not establish identical update schedules across projects. A repository’s listed release date is evidence of that version’s availability, not a promise of a recurring release cadence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, “open source” does not mean every app offers streaming, cloud sync, Android Auto, ReplayGain, equalizer controls and metadata editing. Select the app whose documented capabilities match your workflow instead of assuming those features travel across projects.

Bottom-line selection

Install VLC when compatibility and remote playback outweigh specialized music-library features. Pick Soul Searching for Android Auto, statistics, metadata work and advanced queues. Pick Lotus when offline-by-default privacy, ReplayGain and organization are central. Fossify is the practical ad-free choice with an equalizer, timer and widgets. Vibe and Gramophone keep local playback simple, with Gramophone adding particularly strong lyric and ReplayGain support. Void Player is the modern, private option for users who value Media3 playback, efficient scanning and dynamic visuals.
