It also acknowledges that users treat GIMP as a Photoshop replacement, while clarifying that competing with Photoshop is not the project’s focus. GIMP is free software under GPL version 3 or later, and its FAQ says it can be used commercially. For RAW photographs, the FAQ describes plug-ins that use darktable or RawTherapee to process images. Krita is worth considering if photo work overlaps with drawing, painting, or stylus-based retouching. Its official download page lists version 5.3.4.1, released October 7, 2026, and installers for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The official sources reviewed do not provide a current detailed PSD compatibility matrix for features such as smart objects, adjustment layers, or effects. Test copies of the files that matter to you in the exact application versions you plan to use.
