Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo check a news story or screenshot, separate the claim from the image, trace both to their earliest available sources, and look for independent corroboration. A genuine photo can still be old, cropped, or paired with a false date, location, or event. Reverse-image search, metadata, visual clues, and AI detectors can help, but none proves a claim on its own.
Start by stating exactly what the post claims
Write down the factual assertion in one sentence. Keep it separate from opinion, commentary, a dramatic headline, and the image used to persuade you. Note the named people, place, date, event, and who is making the claim. This makes it easier to check each part rather than treating a post as one indivisible story.

- What specific event or action is said to have happened?
- Where and when is it supposed to have happened?
- Who is the source: a named witness, an organization, an official record, or an account that does not identify its source?
- What does the attached image actually show, and what does its caption ask you to infer?
A screenshot may accurately reproduce a post while the post itself is wrong. Conversely, a real image may be attached to an inaccurate caption. Check the claim and the media separately.

Open the linked story or original post instead of relying only on a screenshot. Check the publisher, author, publication date, cited documents, direct statements, and links. Search a distinctive phrase from the screenshot in quotation marks or without them; this can uncover the source page, earlier copies, or a later correction.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The House of Commons Library recommends tracing media to its original source because the original can provide context missing from a social post. Look at the material surrounding the quoted line or image: a crop can remove a qualification, make an old post look new, or conceal that a claim was disputed.
- Check whether the page is a genuine publisher or organization site, rather than an imitation or an account using a similar name.
- Look for the article’s date and whether it has been updated or corrected.
- Follow citations to the underlying document or direct statement where possible; do not treat a link to another unsourced post as primary evidence.
- Compare the screenshot’s wording and layout with the live page. A mismatch may reflect editing, cropping, a changed page, or a fabricated image; it is a reason to investigate, not a verdict by itself.
Look for independent corroboration
For consequential claims, search for primary records and reporting from sources that did not simply copy the same account. The Associated Press says its journalists corroborate facts using several independent, reliable sources. Multiple sites repeating one unsourced claim are not multiple independent confirmations.
Prefer evidence close to the event: an original document, a direct statement, a relevant public record, or reporting that explains how the facts were verified. Ask whether the sources have separate access to evidence or are all citing the same post. If accounts disagree, identify exactly which detail is disputed rather than treating the number of posts or shares as proof.

Reverse-search the screenshot or image
Use Google Lens or About this image, or another reverse-image search service, to look for visually similar images and earlier appearances. Inspect the result pages, dates, captions, and linked pages themselves. A result can reveal that an image circulated before the event it is now said to depict, or that a similar image has been used with different captions.
- Use the clearest available image. If you only have a screenshot, crop around the image itself when the search tool allows it; retain a copy of the uncropped screenshot for context.
- Review several matches rather than relying on the first result. Check the dates and open the pages where the image appears.
- Look for the earliest available appearance and the version with the most context. Search distinctive text separately if the screenshot contains a headline or caption.
- Compare the actual visual details across versions. A similar-looking image may be a different photograph, and an early result is not necessarily the original source.
Google’s feature may show when Google first saw a similar image, other pages using it, and early uses. These are contextual clues, not proof of the image’s origin or of the caption’s accuracy. Search coverage is incomplete, so a lack of matches does not establish that an image is new or authentic.
Check whether the caption fits the image
Even authentic media can be miscaptioned. Compare visible signs, landmarks, language, weather, landscape, and time clues with the claimed place and event. Search for coverage from the stated date, and check whether older versions of the media carry another caption.

The House of Commons Library describes a video claimed to show a 2024 explosion at Maryland’s Frances Scott Key Bridge that actually showed a 2022 explosion at the Kerch Bridge. The example illustrates why verifying that a file is real is not the same as verifying when and where it was recorded.
- Does the architecture, road layout, vegetation, or landscape fit the claimed location?
- Do signs, language, uniforms, vehicle markings, or other visible details fit the date and place?
- Is the weather, lighting, or season plausible for the stated time?
- Can you find other reporting or imagery from the event that independently matches the scene?
These comparisons can narrow possibilities, but they are not substitutes for specialist geolocation or reporting when the stakes are high.
Use metadata and provenance as supporting evidence
Metadata can contain details such as a file’s creation time or device information, but it may be missing, changed, or misleading. Google warns that image credit and source metadata may be modified. The House of Commons Library notes that social platforms may strip metadata and users can edit it. A screenshot downloaded from a social platform may not be the original file at all.

C2PA Content Credentials can record provenance information about a file’s source and editing history. Such credentials can help explain a file’s history when present and valid, but provenance does not prove that the accompanying claim is true. A well-documented image can still be paired with a false caption; missing credentials do not by themselves prove manipulation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not treat visual tells or AI detectors as a verdict
Generative images may contain visual inconsistencies, but those errors are becoming less reliable as a way to identify synthetic media. A detector’s output is another signal to assess, not a factual finding. Do not label an image fake solely because a tool flags it, or authentic solely because a tool does not.
Google announced expanded SynthID and Content Credentials verification capabilities in May 2026. The announcement described a rollout across products, so availability can vary. Check whether a feature is available in the product you are using; do not assume every image can be checked through it.

When the evidence conflicts, pause before sharing
If the date, location, source, or independent accounts conflict, do not share the claim as confirmed. State what you were able to verify and what remains unknown. For a high-impact claim, defer to specialist reporting or primary records rather than trying to settle a complex investigation from one screenshot.
- Keep the original post or file and note where and when you found it.
- Describe the specific uncertainty: for example, the image appears to be older, but its original source is not established.
- Say what evidence would change the assessment, such as a primary record, a direct statement, or independently verified reporting.
- Revisit the claim if reliable new evidence appears; early reports and platform features can change.

If you need a clean capture of a live webpage as one piece of your documentation, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. A capture records what the page displayed at that time; it does not authenticate the story, prove the page’s author, or establish that an attached image depicts the claimed event.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of the page at the supplied URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if a news story is real?
Check its original source, trace cited evidence to primary material where possible, and look for independent reporting that does not simply repeat the same claim.
Can metadata or an AI detector prove an image is real?
No. Metadata can be removed or altered, and detectors can be wrong. Provenance and detection results are supporting clues, not proof that an image or its caption is true.
