Best overall approach: use LangGraph when you need durable, inspectable workflows; add LangChain components for models and tools; choose Deep Agents for a ready-made general-purpose harness; and use Open Deep Research when the main job is Perplexity-style web research. None of these projects is, by itself, a replacement for SPACE’s isolated Firecracker microVMs. For a secure production system, pair an orchestration layer with SPACE or another sandbox runtime.

That distinction matters. SPACE is an execution and isolation service: it creates Linux environments, runs commands, preserves writable filesystems, and manages sandbox lifecycles through HTTP and server-sent-events interfaces. LangGraph, LangChain, Deep Agents, and Open Deep Research primarily solve planning, tool use, state, research delegation, approvals, and report generation.

The short answer: which alternative should you choose?

Pick the project that matches the part of an agent system you actually need to replace or build:

  • LangGraph: best for explicit, durable workflows with checkpoints, retries, interrupts, and human approval.
  • LangChain: best for assembling a custom agent loop from model, tool, message, MCP, middleware, and guardrail components.
  • Deep Agents: best when you want a higher-level, production-oriented harness with context management, subagents, long-term memory, skills, and execution-environment integration points.
  • Open Deep Research: best for an open, configurable research agent that separates scoping, web research, and writing.

If your requirement includes untrusted code execution, file manipulation, credential isolation, network restrictions, pause/resume, or recovery of a running environment, use one of these frameworks together with SPACE or another sandbox. A workflow framework alone does not create a VM boundary.

What Perplexity SPACE actually provides

SPACE is short for “Sandboxed Platform for Agentic Code Execution.” It is the execution and isolation layer behind Perplexity Computer, not an agent-planning framework in the same sense as LangGraph or LangChain.

MicroVM isolation and writable environments

According to Perplexity’s documentation, SPACE runs code in isolated Firecracker microVMs. Its HTTP API can create Linux environments, run commands, collect output, and manage sandbox lifecycles. A template supplies the starting environment. Each sandbox receives its own VM and writable filesystem, and multiple commands can run in the same sandbox so an agent can build on files and state created by earlier steps.

Lifecycle controls for long-running agents

The platform is designed for agents that cannot finish in a single request. Its documented capabilities include asynchronous lifecycle operations, pause and resume, suspension, snapshots, recovery, and conversation branching. Those controls let an agent stop after an approval request, continue later, or recover an environment instead of recreating it from scratch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Credential and network boundaries

Perplexity says SPACE was open-sourced to provide isolation, state recovery, credential controls, and network controls for agent runtimes. Those controls address a different risk category from prompt-level guardrails: the sandbox can limit what code can access even when a tool call or generated script behaves unexpectedly.

Interfaces and license

The repository exposes HTTP and server-sent-events interfaces and documents asynchronous operations. It states that SPACE is licensed under Apache License 2.0 and documents local deployment with Kind. You should still verify the repository’s current license text, dependencies, and deployment instructions before adopting a particular revision.

How strong are the published security and scale figures?

Perplexity reports that SPACE has handled “millions of sandbox creations per day” since July in a 2026 announcement. The company also says internal testing found no VM host escape in 108 attempts after fixes, while acknowledging that network-control bypasses were found and remediated. These are vendor-reported results, not independent comparative benchmarks. They should inform a threat model, not substitute for your own security testing.

Alternatives at a glance

Project Best fit What it contributes What it does not replace
LangGraph Durable, explicit agent workflows Stateful graphs, persistence, fault tolerance, streaming, interrupts, retries, observability, custom approvals, and coordinated multi-agent transitions A Firecracker VM, operating-system isolation, or a complete network and credential boundary
LangChain Custom agent harnesses Agent loops and abstractions for models, tools, messages, MCP, middleware, guardrails, dynamic context, human review, and business logic Sandbox lifecycle management and host-level isolation
Deep Agents Ready-made general agent runtime Context management, subagents, long-term memory, skills, and execution-environment support with useful defaults The VM and network-security layer supplied by SPACE
Open Deep Research Perplexity-style research and report writing A configurable pattern built on LangGraph that separates scope, research, and writing, with supervisor-led delegation to research sub-agents A general-purpose sandbox service or universal agent runtime for arbitrary workloads

LangGraph: the strongest choice for durable workflows

LangGraph is the best starting point when your agent must behave like a controlled process rather than an unconstrained chat loop. LangChain’s official open-source overview describes it as a runtime for custom agent workflows.

Why its graph model matters

You represent work as explicit nodes and transitions. A node can plan, call a tool, validate output, request approval, or hand work to another agent. The graph makes those transitions inspectable: you can see which state led to a tool call, where an approval interrupted execution, and which branch should resume after a failure.

Durability, persistence, and recovery

LangGraph documents persistence, fault tolerance, interrupts, and retries. These features are useful when an agent may run for minutes or hours, when a human must approve a consequential action, or when a transient tool failure should be retried without replaying every earlier step. Persistence belongs to workflow state; it does not automatically preserve the operating-system environment where code ran.

Human approval and governance

Use an interrupt before actions such as sending an external message, modifying a production record, executing generated code, or spending a metered resource. Store the proposed action and the relevant state, wait for a decision, then resume the graph. This is complementary to SPACE: LangGraph governs whether the action is allowed, while a sandbox limits what the action can touch.

When LangGraph is not enough

If the agent needs a shell, package installation, a writable project directory, or isolation from your host, add an execution service. LangGraph can orchestrate a call to SPACE, but it is not itself the microVM.

LangChain: the flexible foundation for a custom harness

Choose LangChain when you want to assemble the runtime yourself. Its open-source stack supplies abstractions for models, tools, messages, MCP, and middleware, so your team can wrap a standard tool-using loop with application-specific behavior.

Where LangChain excels

  • Guardrails: inspect tool arguments and model output before execution or delivery.
  • Dynamic context: inject user, tenant, task, or policy information at the point where it is needed.
  • Human review: route selected actions to an approval interface instead of allowing automatic execution.
  • Business logic: add authorization, quotas, domain validation, and audit records around the agent loop.
  • Protocol integration: connect tools and services through supported MCP abstractions.

The trade-off

Flexibility means you must define more of the operating model: state persistence, retry policy, recovery semantics, multi-agent coordination, and observability. If those requirements are central, LangGraph may provide a clearer runtime boundary. If you need a deliberately small or highly specialized harness, LangChain’s lower-level pieces can be a better fit.

Deep Agents: a higher-level general-purpose harness

Deep Agents is the closest option in this stack to a ready-made general agent runtime. The LangChain overview describes it as a production-ready harness with context management, subagents, long-term memory, skills, and execution environments.

Choose it for useful defaults

A general agent often needs more than a single prompt-and-tool loop. Long tasks accumulate context, specialist work can be delegated to subagents, and recurring capabilities can be packaged as skills. Deep Agents groups those concerns so a team can start at a higher level and customize when the defaults no longer fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pair it with explicit controls

Higher-level convenience should not remove review points. Define which skills can run automatically, which tools require approval, how long-term memory is scoped, and which execution environment receives generated code. For untrusted operations, route execution to SPACE or another isolated runtime rather than assuming the harness provides host protection.

Open Deep Research: the closest pattern to a Perplexity-style researcher

Open Deep Research is the most direct choice when the product requirement is “research a question, gather sources, and write a report.” A LangChain article dated July 16, 2025 presents it as an open and configurable implementation built on LangGraph.

Its three-stage architecture

  1. Scope: clarify the question, constraints, and research plan.
  2. Research: use search tools and delegated sub-agents to gather and inspect information.
  3. Write: synthesize the collected material into a structured report.

A supervisor coordinates the research sub-agents. You can bring your own models, search tools, and MCP servers, which makes the pattern adaptable to different data sources and deployment policies.

What it does and does not solve

Open Deep Research gives you a research workflow, not a universal execution sandbox. If a researcher must run code, download files, or inspect untrusted content, place those operations behind a sandbox and keep credentials and network access narrowly scoped.

How to choose by project requirement

You need a state machine with approvals

Start with LangGraph. Model every consequential transition explicitly, persist state before an approval, and resume from the stored checkpoint after the reviewer responds. Add SPACE when a transition needs shell or filesystem access.

You need a thin, highly customized tool-using agent

Start with LangChain. Keep the loop small, then add middleware for authorization, dynamic context, output validation, and human review. Introduce LangGraph later if branching, recovery, or long-running state becomes difficult to maintain.

You need memory, subagents, and skills quickly

Evaluate Deep Agents first. It provides a higher-level starting point, but you still need to define memory scope, tool permissions, approval rules, and the execution boundary.

You need an autonomous research writer

Use Open Deep Research as the workflow pattern. Replace models, search tools, and MCP servers according to your data and policy requirements, then add a sandbox for code and file operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need to execute untrusted code safely

Do not select a workflow framework as though it were a security boundary. Use SPACE or another isolated runtime, restrict credentials and network access, and test escape and bypass scenarios against your own threat model.

A layered architecture for a secure Perplexity-like agent

The most robust design separates decisions, state, research, and execution instead of forcing one project to do everything.

  1. Define the task contract. Specify the user’s goal, allowed data sources, prohibited actions, maximum runtime, and what requires approval.
  2. Choose the orchestrator. Use LangGraph for explicit durable control, LangChain for a custom harness, or Deep Agents for higher-level defaults.
  3. Add the research pattern. For web research, adopt Open Deep Research’s scope, research, and writing separation. Keep source collection distinct from final synthesis so you can inspect evidence before publication.
  4. Route execution to a sandbox. Create a SPACE environment or equivalent only when the agent needs code, files, or a shell. Use a fresh sandbox for unrelated trust domains and retain one sandbox when a task requires continuity across commands.
  5. Issue narrow credentials. Give tools only the credentials required for the current task. Keep secrets outside prompts and outside writable files whenever the execution service supports a safer credential path.
  6. Constrain networking. Permit only the destinations required by the task. Treat network-control bypasses as a security defect even when the VM boundary remains intact.
  7. Insert approval interrupts. Pause before irreversible writes, external communication, privilege changes, purchases, or execution of generated code. Record the proposed action, reviewer, decision, and resumed state.
  8. Persist both workflow and execution state. A graph checkpoint does not necessarily preserve the VM filesystem. Decide whether you need a SPACE snapshot, a new environment reconstructed from artifacts, or both.
  9. Stream and observe. Capture tool calls, command output, lifecycle events, model decisions, approvals, retries, and failures. Server-sent events can support live lifecycle visibility where your SPACE deployment exposes them.
  10. Define recovery paths. For a failed tool, retry safely; for a failed sandbox, restore or recreate it; for an unsafe decision, stop the graph and require a new approval.

Deployment and licensing considerations

SPACE documents local deployment with Kind, which is useful for development and controlled evaluations. Production deployment still requires capacity planning, image and template management, network policy, secret handling, monitoring, and a decision about where persistent artifacts live.

The SPACE repository states Apache License 2.0. The alternatives may have different licenses, dependency terms, model-provider requirements, or hosted-service conditions. Check each repository’s current license and deployment documentation before shipping a commercial product or redistributing modified components.

Do not assume that “open source” means identical operational freedom. A project can publish source code while relying on external model APIs, search providers, container images, or MCP services that have their own terms and availability constraints.

Security checklist before production

  • Run generated code in a disposable isolated environment, never directly on the agent host.
  • Separate credentials by tenant, task, and tool; revoke them when the task ends.
  • Apply an explicit outbound network policy and test denied destinations.
  • Keep approval gates for irreversible or high-impact actions.
  • Log command output, filesystem changes, tool arguments, model decisions, and reviewer decisions.
  • Test pause, resume, snapshot, restore, timeout, cancellation, and partial-failure behavior.
  • Test both VM escape attempts and network-control bypasses; vendor-reported results are not a substitute for independent testing.
  • Define retention and deletion rules for writable filesystems, snapshots, logs, and research artifacts.
  • Make model, search, and tool substitutions explicit so a provider outage does not silently change safety behavior.

How to evaluate the options fairly

No independent apples-to-apples benchmark establishes a winner for cost, latency, answer quality, or operational effort across SPACE, LangGraph, LangChain, Deep Agents, and Open Deep Research. Perplexity’s scale and security figures are vendor-reported, and the projects solve different layers of the stack.

Run a workload-specific evaluation using the same model, tools, prompts, and sandbox policy. Measure:

  • startup time for a fresh environment and resume time for a paused one;
  • time from task submission to first useful tool call and final report;
  • tool success rate, retry rate, and recovery time after failure;
  • quality and completeness of research reports against a labeled question set;
  • approval frequency, reviewer effort, and unsafe-action interception rate;
  • filesystem and network isolation under adversarial tests;
  • model, search, storage, and compute cost for your actual workload;
  • observability quality: whether an operator can reconstruct why an action happened;
  • operational effort to patch, scale, restore, and upgrade each layer.

Evaluate at least two task classes: a research-only job that never executes code, and a mixed job that searches, writes files, runs commands, pauses for approval, and resumes. The second case reveals whether your workflow checkpoints and execution snapshots remain consistent.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling a framework a sandbox

LangGraph, LangChain, and the higher-level harnesses orchestrate work. They do not automatically provide Firecracker-style host isolation. Put untrusted execution behind SPACE or another sandbox.

Persisting the graph but losing the files

A durable workflow checkpoint can restore decisions and messages while the execution environment has disappeared. Define how files, packages, and generated artifacts are snapshotted or rebuilt.

Giving a research agent unrestricted network access

Research tools need connectivity, but unrestricted egress increases the impact of prompt injection and malicious downloads. Use allowlists, separate retrieval from execution, and require approval before a retrieved artifact is executed.

Relying on a single approval prompt

Approval should include the exact tool, arguments, destination, files affected, and expected side effects. A vague “continue?” prompt gives reviewers too little information to make a safe decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing unlike products on one score

SPACE is an execution substrate; LangGraph is a workflow runtime; LangChain is a component and harness foundation; Deep Agents is a higher-level runtime; Open Deep Research is a research pattern. Compare each at the layer where it operates, then test the combined architecture on your workload.

Bottom line

For most teams, LangGraph is the best open-source alternative for controlling a durable agent workflow, Open Deep Research is the best starting pattern for Perplexity-style research, LangChain is the best foundation for a custom harness, and Deep Agents is the best higher-level option when you want memory, subagents, skills, and context management quickly. None replaces SPACE’s isolated execution boundary. The strongest design combines an orchestration layer with SPACE or another sandbox, then validates security, recovery, quality, and cost on the tasks you actually intend to run.
