For most people using a quiet desk, the Sennheiser HD 560S is the best place to start. It combines a generally flat response, a spacious presentation for games, and a fit that RTINGS considers comfortable for extended listening. It is wired, leaks sound in both directions, and does not emphasize sub-bass, but it is the most balanced crossover choice in this group.
Choose the Sennheiser HD 600 when natural vocals and acoustic instruments matter more than bass impact, the Philips SHP9600/00 when you want an inexpensive and comfortable home-listening model, the Sennheiser HD 550 when its sale price makes a newer desktop design attractive, or the Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa when you want an exceptionally light neutral reference headphone and have a source that can handle 470-ohm impedance.

Best open-back headphones at a glance
| Headphone | Best suited to | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Sennheiser HD 560S | Most gaming, music, and home listening | Balanced, generally flat tuning with a spacious presentation and comfortable long-session fit |
| Sennheiser HD 600 | Vocals, acoustic music, and critical listening | Accurate midrange and restrained, controlled bass |
| Philips SHP9600/00 | Budget home listening | Comfort-focused open design with a removable 3 m cable and broad device compatibility |
| Sennheiser HD 550 | Newer desktop gaming-and-music setups | Wired mid-to-high-impedance design; value depends strongly on the sale price |
| Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa | Lightweight neutral reference listening | 199 g frame, neutral character, and 470-ohm impedance that makes source capability important |
All five are open-back over-ear designs. They are intended for quiet rooms, not commuting, offices where people sit nearby, or any situation in which you need isolation.
What “open-back” means
An open-back headphone leaves the rear of each earcup open, commonly behind a grille or mesh. The driver can interact more freely with the air around it instead of operating inside a sealed chamber. PC Gamer describes the audible result as a “wide and airy soundstage,” while SoundGuys notes the unavoidable trade-off: sound leaks out and outside noise comes in.

That leakage is not a minor technical detail. Someone sitting next to you may hear music, game effects, or dialogue, and a running television or conversation can intrude on what you hear. Open-back models are therefore best at a quiet desk, in a private room, or during relaxed evening listening when isolation is not required.
Why gamers often prefer the presentation
A spacious presentation can make left-right and front-back changes easier to perceive. In a competitive game, that may help you separate footsteps, reloads, and environmental cues. In a single-player title, it can make ambience and orchestral scores feel less confined to the earcups. The effect is a presentation advantage, not a guarantee of better performance: a game’s audio mix, your settings, and your own hearing still matter.
Why they sound natural with music
Without a sealed enclosure pressing the sound into a small cavity, many open-back headphones give vocals, acoustic instruments, and room ambience a more speaker-like sense of space. That does not mean every model is neutral. The HD 560S and ATH-R70xa aim for a relatively even balance, the HD 600 prioritizes accurate midrange, and the SHP9600 and HD 550 have their own tonal choices.

How to choose an open-back headphone
1. Start with your room
Room noise is the first filter. If you regularly hear traffic, a fan, roommates, an office, or a television, an open-back model will not hide those sounds. If another person is likely to be disturbed by your listening, leakage is equally disqualifying. In either case, a closed-back headphone is the more suitable design; the models here cannot be made isolating with a software setting or a different cable.
2. Decide whether accuracy or fullness matters more
Neutral or generally flat tuning is useful when you want voices and instruments represented without a strong bass or treble tilt. It is also a sensible starting point for games because effects remain easier to distinguish. A fuller signature can make explosions and bass lines more physical, but the supplied evaluations identify the HD 560S as limited in low bass and the HD 600 as restrained in bass. Treat that as a deliberate tonal choice rather than a defect.
3. Consider spatial presentation separately from frequency balance
“Wide” does not automatically mean “accurate.” A headphone can sound spacious yet place a sound source imprecisely. Use the shortlist this way: the HD 560S is the broad all-round gaming baseline, the HD 600 is oriented toward dedicated music listening, and the ATH-R70xa is aimed at neutral reference work. Your game’s own stereo or surround processing can change the result more than switching between two similarly open designs.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
4. Check clamp and long-session comfort
Weight is only one part of comfort. Headband pressure, earcup depth, pad material, heat, and how the frame fits your head all matter over a three-hour session. RTINGS reports extended-wear comfort for the HD 560S. The HD 600 can feel tight on larger heads, despite its over-ear construction. The ATH-R70xa’s 199 g weight is unusually light among full-size reference headphones, which can reduce fatigue for some listeners.
5. Match the headphone to the source
Impedance and sensitivity affect how easily a headphone reaches a useful listening level. The ATH-R70xa is specified at 470 ohms, so a weak laptop, controller, or phone output may not provide the headroom you want. The HD 550 is described as a mid-to-high-impedance desktop headphone, making the output of your computer, interface, or amplifier part of the purchase decision. For every model, verify that your source has a standard headphone output and that you can reach normal volume without running the control at its limit.
6. Treat cable convenience as a practical specification
A fixed desk setup can tolerate a long cable, while a compact laptop station may not. The SHP9600/00 includes a removable 3 m cable and a 6.3-to-3.5 mm adapter. The ATH-R70xa includes a 3 m detachable cable and a ¼-inch adapter. Those accessories are useful when moving between a desktop amplifier and a laptop, but they do not change the headphones’ acoustic character.
7. Check the current price rather than assuming a permanent tier
The HD 550 is specifically described as a good option when discounted, so its ranking can change with sales. The same is true of any model whose price moves close to a more capable alternative. Compare the current local price, return policy, and stock immediately before ordering; the supplied specifications do not establish a universal price for any of these headphones.
Detailed picks
Sennheiser HD 560S: the best all-rounder
The HD 560S is the safest recommendation when one headphone must cover competitive games, cinematic single-player titles, music, and ordinary desktop use. RTINGS characterizes its profile as generally flat, with a spacious presentation and a fit that remains comfortable during extended wear. That combination makes it easier to use as a reference point: voices do not need heavy correction, game effects remain separated, and the open design supplies the sense of air many listeners want.
Its limitation is low-bass extension. If your priority is sub-bass rumble in action games or electronic music, you may find it less visceral than a bass-oriented closed model. Equalization can change the balance, but it cannot change the fact that the earcups leak sound and provide no isolation.

For a first open-back purchase, the HD 560S makes sense when your desk is quiet, you do not need a microphone built into the earcup, and your computer or interface has a competent headphone output. Add a separate microphone if you need clear voice chat.
Sennheiser HD 600: the music-first choice
The HD 600 is the pick for listeners who spend most of their time with vocals, acoustic instruments, and recordings where midrange accuracy matters. RTINGS describes it as an over-ear open-back headphone for dedicated listening, with flat, accurate instruments and vocals. It is especially convincing when you want to hear the character of a singer, the texture of a guitar, or the balance of a small ensemble without an obvious bass lift.
Bass is restrained rather than emphasized, and the clamp can feel tight on larger heads. Those traits make the HD 600 less universally comfortable and less immediately exciting for bass-heavy games. In a quiet room with a suitable source, however, its focused, accurate presentation is the reason to choose it over a more general-purpose model.

The SHP9600/00 is built around uncomplicated home use. Philips specifies 50 mm neodymium drivers, an open-back construction, breathable cushions, and a removable 3 m cable. The package includes a 6.3-to-3.5 mm adapter, so the same headphone can connect to a laptop, television, phone with a compatible output, or a conventional headphone amplifier.
Its strongest case is comfort and convenience at a lower-cost position, not laboratory-style neutrality. Use it when you want a relaxed home headphone for playlists, films, and casual games and would rather spend less on the first step into open-back listening. Because the product is open, keep it in a private room and avoid expecting it to block a nearby conversation.
Sennheiser HD 550: a newer desktop alternative
The HD 550 is a wired desktop headphone aimed at both gaming and music. PC Gamer describes it as a mid-to-high-impedance design that works well in those roles and reports a review weight of 237 g. It has no built-in microphone, so multiplayer users should plan on a separate microphone or headset-mic accessory.

This model is most compelling when its current sale price puts it clearly below a more expensive alternative or when you prefer a newer desktop-focused design. At full price, compare its comfort, source requirements, and tuning with the HD 560S rather than assuming that a newer model is automatically a better match.

The ATH-R70xa is the specialist choice. MusicRadar lists an open-back design, a 45 mm driver, a 5 Hz–40 kHz frequency response, 97 dB sensitivity, 470-ohm impedance, 199 g weight, a 3 m detachable cable, and a ¼-inch adapter. Its review verdict calls it “super light, quite neutral sounding and one of the more comfortable over-ear open-back designs we’ve tried.”
That low weight and neutral character suit long reference sessions, editing, and listeners who prefer an unembellished balance. The 470-ohm load is the important qualification: source capability is not optional. Confirm that your interface, desktop computer, or headphone amplifier can drive it to your preferred level before buying. A phone or game controller may work, but the only reliable answer comes from the output specifications of the particular device.
HD 560S vs. HD 600
| Decision point | HD 560S | HD 600 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Gaming, music, and general desktop use | Dedicated music listening |
| Tonal description | Generally flat; limited low bass noted by RTINGS | Flat and accurate through instruments and vocals; restrained bass |
| Spatial character | Spacious presentation suited to game ambience and positioning | More focused on accurate musical reproduction than an all-purpose gaming role |
| Long-session note | RTINGS reports comfortable extended wear | Clamp may feel tight on larger heads |
| Best reason to buy | One headphone for many activities | Natural vocals and acoustic instruments |
Choose the HD 560S if gaming is a major use or if you want one neutral starting point. Choose the HD 600 if music is the priority and you are comfortable with its tighter fit and less prominent bass. Neither is the right answer for a noisy or shared room.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need an amplifier?
Not automatically. An amplifier is useful only when your source cannot provide enough voltage or clean headroom for the headphone you choose. Signs include needing maximum volume for ordinary listening, audible distortion, or a level that changes when you switch from a computer to a controller.

Check the output capability of your motherboard, laptop dock, audio interface, or controller first. If it falls short, a dedicated headphone amplifier or a capable USB audio interface can solve the problem. Buy the amplifier for a measured source limitation, not simply because the headphone is open-back.

Using open-back headphones for gaming
For competitive play
Start with the game’s normal stereo mode and keep software surround processing off until you have established how the headphone sounds. Open-back leakage does not improve positional accuracy by itself; the benefit comes from the headphone’s tonal balance and spatial presentation. The HD 560S is the most straightforward shortlist choice when positional cues and general music use carry equal weight.
For single-player games
Open-back designs make environmental ambience, orchestral scores, and dialogue feel less enclosed. Keep the volume moderate so that quiet details remain audible without turning louder effects into fatigue. If a fan or air conditioner masks those details, move to a quieter room rather than expecting an open-back headphone to filter the noise.
For voice chat
None of the five recommendations has a built-in microphone. Plan for a desk microphone, a clip-on microphone, or a compatible boom attachment. Place the microphone away from the earcups to reduce the chance that leaked game audio enters the voice signal.
Comfort and fit checks before you keep a pair
- Set the headband first. The earcups should surround your ears without pressing the pinna. A poor headband setting can make a moderate clamp feel excessive.
- Wear the headphone for at least 20 minutes. Short showroom tests often miss pressure at the jaw, crown, or temples.
- Check glasses and hair. Frames can create pressure points, while thick hair can change the seal around the ear even on an open design.
- Listen at your normal level. Excessive volume can make any headphone seem more detailed while increasing fatigue.
- Use the return window responsibly. If the clamp, weight, or cable becomes distracting, a different model is a better fix than hoping your head will adapt.
Leakage and room etiquette
Open-back headphones leak enough that people nearby can often identify what you are playing during quiet passages. Keep the volume low when someone is working, sleeping, or on a call in the same room. They also admit outside sound, so they are unsuitable for travel, public spaces, and noisy work areas. If you need both awareness and privacy, consider a headphone designed for controlled ambient listening rather than an open-back model.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm that your listening room is quiet and private.
- Pick the use case: HD 560S for mixed use, HD 600 for vocal and acoustic accuracy, SHP9600/00 for budget home listening, HD 550 when discounted, or ATH-R70xa for lightweight neutral reference work.
- Check the source output before choosing a mid-to-high-impedance model, especially the 470-ohm ATH-R70xa.
- Verify connector and cable length. The SHP9600/00 and ATH-R70xa both include 3 m cables and adapters for common desktop connections.
- Budget separately for a microphone if you play multiplayer games.
- Compare current local prices and return terms immediately before ordering; sale pricing can change the value ranking.
- Test comfort for a sustained session and return the model that creates pressure or fatigue.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Sennheiser HD 560S for the broadest mix of gaming, music, and home listening in a quiet room. Move to the Sennheiser HD 600 when accurate vocals and instruments are your main goal. Choose the Philips SHP9600/00 for a comfortable, lower-cost way to try open-back listening. Consider the Sennheiser HD 550 only after checking its current discount and your desktop output. Choose the Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa when low weight and neutral reference sound justify confirming that your source can drive 470 ohms.
