For a 1080p60 gaming stream to YouTube Live, start with H.264, CBR at 17 Mbps, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. For 1080p30, use 14 Mbps. Keep the complete stream bitrate within your upload capacity with about 20% headroom, then test representative gameplay and audio before leaving the broadcast unattended. These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular PC or connection will stay live overnight.
“VOD” can mean either YouTube’s replay of a live broadcast or a separate recording saved on your computer. The settings below are for the live feed; local recording settings are covered separately.

Recommended OBS settings for a 1080p YouTube Live stream
Use these as starting points in OBS. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends progressive video, square pixels, H.264 with CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations before a broadcast in case its guidance changes.

The minimum bitrate is not the recommended target for quality. If your PC or upload connection cannot reliably support 1080p60 at the recommended bitrate, 1080p30 is a legitimate alternative. It uses less bitrate and may reduce the workload, at the cost of less-smooth motion. The figures are YouTube recommendations, not the result of a controlled comparison of games or hardware.

Where to set the output and frame rate
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set the output resolution to 1920 × 1080 for a 1080p stream, and choose 60 or 30 fps according to the target you can sustain. Keep the output progressive. If your base canvas differs from the output, OBS may scale the image; confirm the game remains clear and correctly framed in the preview.
Where to set live output
Open Settings → Output and select Output Mode: Advanced if needed to expose the streaming controls. Under Streaming, choose an H.264 encoder available on your system, set Rate Control to CBR, enter the applicable bitrate from the table, and set Keyframe Interval to 2 s. OBS labels can vary slightly by version or encoder. The important requirements are CBR for the live feed and a two-second keyframe interval.
Encoder choice and alternatives
H.264 is the straightforward starting point. YouTube also lists 12 Mbps for 1080p60 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 with AV1 or H.265. Use those figures only if your encoder and the complete streaming workflow support the selected codec; do not assume every OBS setup or YouTube ingest path does.

The available hardware and software encoders vary by computer. There is no universal encoder winner established by these recommendations. Choose one your system can run without missed frames, and test it under actual game load.
Set audio, stream key, and YouTube connection
Audio
YouTube supports AAC or MP3 and lists 128 kbps stereo audio at 44.1 kHz in its advanced recommendations. In OBS, configure the stream audio track and confirm the game, microphone, and any other intended sources are routed to it. Listen to a test recording or unlisted stream: a bitrate setting cannot fix clipped, muted, or incorrectly routed audio.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the live control room for the broadcast and configure the stream. Copy the stream key from the stream settings.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and connect your account, or use the stream-key option if that is how your setup is configured.
- If entering a key manually, paste it into the stream key field and keep it private. Anyone with access to the key may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Apply the settings, start a test stream, and confirm YouTube receives a healthy signal before scheduling or leaving the actual broadcast unattended.
Use RTMPS when selecting the server or protocol option; YouTube recommends it. A correct key and a successful OBS connection do not by themselves confirm that the stream’s image, audio, or upload connection will remain healthy.

Check upload capacity before choosing 1080p60
Bitrate uses upload bandwidth, not download bandwidth. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare capacity. Count the video and audio together, plus other devices and services using the same connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

As a practical check, measure upload performance at the location and time you expect to stream, then test while other usual network activity is present. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained throughput. If capacity fluctuates, lower the video bitrate or use 1080p30 rather than running at the edge of the connection.
Test the stream before leaving it overnight
- Run OBS with the game or representative footage, including the fastest motion and the audio sources you will use. A static desktop test does not exercise a gaming stream in the same way.
- Start a private or unlisted test broadcast if appropriate for your channel, and verify the picture, motion, sound, and stream health in YouTube Studio.
- Watch OBS for rendering or encoding lag and YouTube for connection or ingest warnings. If either reports problems, reduce load or bitrate and test again.
- If you also record locally, confirm the recording opens and that its file size continues to grow while recording. YouTube recommends checking local archive integrity and growth; this does not establish that every creator needs a separate local copy.
- Before the overnight run, check that the game, OBS, and PC will not be interrupted by sleep, restart, update, power, or network changes. Settings alone cannot ensure an uninterrupted unattended broadcast.
YouTube does not prescribe a universally safe unattended duration or a guaranteed configuration for overnight streaming. A prior test reduces avoidable surprises but cannot prove that a future connection or computer will not fail.

Should you also save a local VOD?
YouTube may retain a replay of a live broadcast, while OBS can separately record a local file. A local recording is optional; it is useful when you want an independent copy, but it adds disk use and system workload. Check available storage and verify the file afterward if you rely on it.
Do not confuse live-stream rate control with recording quality controls. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, published November 30, 2023, gives recording baselines—not YouTube live bitrate settings. It lists NVENC CQP 16–23, keyframe interval 2, preset P5, High Quality tuning, and two B-frames; for x264 it lists CRF 16–23, keyframe interval 2, and the veryfast preset. OBS notes that lower CQP or CRF values produce higher quality and larger files. Treat these as local recording guidance, not a substitute for live CBR.
Latency: prioritize stability for an overnight broadcast
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can mean more playback buffering, and YouTube says low latency matters less when the creator is not interacting with viewers. For a non-interactive overnight stream, avoid choosing low latency simply because it sounds preferable; a stable feed is the more relevant goal. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
OBS settings do not grant rights to stream game footage, music, or other material. Use content you have permission to broadcast, and check the game publisher’s streaming terms when relevant. YouTube may detect copyrighted material in a live broadcast or its replay; a technically healthy stream can still face restrictions or claims.
Repeatedly looping material does not itself make it eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies can consider whether content is original and adds value, so check the current rules in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a long or continuous broadcast qualifies. Avoid presenting another creator’s work as your own or using music without the necessary rights.
Troubleshooting overnight stream problems
