To check a lecture stream from your phone, first decide whether you are a viewer checking someone else’s broadcast or the channel owner checking stream health. Viewers can watch the picture and listen to the audio, and can select Notify me for a scheduled stream. Channel owners can use YouTube’s mobile live tools and YouTube Studio analytics to review status and metrics. YouTube documents no viewer alert that guarantees notice when another channel’s 24/7 stream stops.
If you are watching someone else’s lecture
- Open the lecture’s YouTube watch page in the YouTube app or a mobile browser.
- If the broadcast is scheduled and has not started, tap Notify me on the stream page. YouTube documents this as a notification for a stream or Premiere going live—not an alarm that an active stream has failed. YouTube Help: Find live streams and Premieres.
- To check an active stream, play it and confirm that both picture and sound are present. Recheck periodically if you need to know whether the lecture is still coming through; the available viewer guidance does not describe a control that reports the broadcaster’s encoder health.
Do not assume a phone will keep playing continuously with its screen locked or alert you if the broadcast drops. YouTube’s documented viewer notifications are for the start of a stream, and its guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted overnight playback.

If you own or manage the channel
Check the live stream’s status
- Open the channel’s live-stream dashboard or Live Control Room while the broadcast is active.
- Check Stream status. YouTube describes this as the health of the stream being sent from a mobile device; it may show specific errors and instructions. YouTube Help: Stream on mobile.
Review the metrics available for your setup
Depending on how the stream is being sent, YouTube’s mobile workflow can show concurrent viewers, stream duration, and selected chat or like activity. The available metrics differ between a stream sent from a phone and one sent through an encoder, so do not expect every metric in every setup. - Open the YouTube Studio app.
- Tap Content, then the Live tab.
- Select the stream and open its Analytics card.
YouTube documents this route for iPhone and iPad. The concurrent-viewer report is available at video level, and post-stream metrics can appear within minutes after the broadcast ends. App labels and availability may change. YouTube Help: Check your YouTube Analytics.

Monitoring is different from broadcasting
If you are setting up a phone to broadcast the lecture rather than checking an existing stream, YouTube’s mobile live feature has eligibility requirements and is started in the YouTube app. After the broadcast, the creator sees a recap and an archive is created. Check YouTube’s current requirements and in-app options, since eligibility and feature availability can change. YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile.
YouTube Help advises creators to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” It also recommends trying a test stream. These are quality checks for the creator; they do not turn viewer notifications into a stream-failure alarm. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips.

Common monitoring problems
- You did not get a notification. Notify me applies to a scheduled stream or Premiere going live; it is not documented as a failure alert for an existing broadcast. Open the watch page and check the stream directly.
- You cannot find stream status. The status described in YouTube’s mobile guidance is for the creator’s stream. If you are a viewer, check the picture and sound on the watch page instead.
- A metric is missing. The figures shown depend on whether the stream comes from a phone or encoder. Check the stream’s Analytics card in Studio for the creator-side reporting available to that video.
- The lecture plays, but you do not know whether it will keep playing overnight. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise continuous playback on a locked phone screen. Keep the stream visible and check it periodically if phone playback is your monitoring method.
