For one fireplace video, create a simple OBS scene with a Media Source, select the local clip, and turn on Loop. Then set output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to fit your streaming platform, source footage, computer, and upload connection. There is no single preset that is best for every setup, and OBS on a home computer is not an uptime guarantee.
Build a scene that loops one fireplace clip
- In OBS, add a scene for the fireplace stream and keep it focused on the video and its audio.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, click + and choose Media Source. Select the local fireplace recording.
- Enable Loop so playback starts again when the clip ends. Check the source’s playback options, including restarting when visible, hardware decoding when available, hiding at the end, and closing the file while inactive, as appropriate for your scene. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Keep the clip’s crackling audio, or add a separate audio source if that is how your setup is built. Confirm the intended source is active and watch the Audio Mixer meters while it plays.
- Preview the scene and let the clip reach its end once. Confirm the video restarts cleanly and the fire remains visible; listen for the crackling audio at the level you intend to stream.
A VLC Video source is an alternative if you need a playlist. Its documented loop-playlist behavior is enabled by default, but VLC must be installed. For a single local clip, Media Source is the simpler fit. (OBS Media Sources.)

Choose output settings for your platform and setup
Use the resolution you actually intend to stream, a frame rate the source and computer can sustain, and a video bitrate that stays within both your stable upload capacity and the platform’s current ingest limits. Check the platform’s current requirements rather than treating general OBS guidance as a universal preset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesResolution and frame rate
Match output resolution to the level of detail you need and can deliver reliably. A higher resolution can show more detail in the flames, but it also demands more from the connection and encoding setup. Set frame rate with the source and machine in mind. OBS uses 30 and 60 FPS as examples and cautions that 60 FPS can be more taxing than 30 FPS. For a mostly static fireplace scene, weigh smoother motion against that extra load instead of assuming the higher frame rate is automatically better. (OBS Studio Overview Guide.)

Video bitrate and upload stability
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate. Treat that as a diagnostic starting point, not a promise: upload can fluctuate, and the selected bitrate must also comply with the streaming service’s limits. If dropped frames persist, lower the bitrate and check the ingest service’s limits. (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.)
Audio bitrate
OBS’s overview describes about 160 kbps as a general audio streaming reference, while noting that lower values may suit a limited upload connection. This is general guidance, not a current requirement for every platform; check the service’s latest specifications. (OBS Studio Overview Guide.)

Start with the wizard, then test
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help establish a starting point by considering intended use, computer hardware, and network conditions. Treat its result as a starting configuration: test the actual scene and stream before relying on it for a long broadcast. OBS strongly recommends testing a configuration before a first live stream. (OBS Studio Overview Guide; Auto-Configuration Wizard.)
Prepare OBS for a long-running stream
- Turn on Automatic Reconnect in OBS’s Advanced settings so OBS can attempt to reconnect after a disconnection. This helps with recovery but does not guarantee continuous uptime. (OBS Studio Overview Guide.)
- Keep the scene lean. OBS uses GPU resources to render and composite scenes. Unnecessary sources, complex browser overlays, and media much larger than the output requires can increase system load. (OBS Studio Overview Guide.)
- Watch the dropped-frame counter. OBS says dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the ingest server or an inability to sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce bitrate and, where appropriate, try a different server or service. (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.)
- Test the actual stream. Verify that playback loops, the picture stays visible, and crackling audio is present at the intended level. A successful preview alone does not test the full streaming path.
Troubleshoot drops, playback, and buffering
| Symptom | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The fireplace clip stops at the end | Confirm the source is a Media Source and that Loop is enabled. | Enable Loop, then preview through the end of the clip again. (OBS Media Sources.) |
| The crackling audio is missing or too quiet | Check that the intended audio source is active and that its Audio Mixer meter responds during playback. | Correct the source or level, then test the live output and listen to it. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Check for an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. | Lower video bitrate; also respect the platform’s bitrate limits and consider a different server or service where appropriate. (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.) |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | Consider the bitrate, resolution, frame rate, platform transcoding, and viewer-device constraints. | Test a lower-demand output configuration and check whether the viewing problem changes. (OBS Studio Overview Guide.) |
| The stream disconnects | Check the connection and whether OBS is configured to reconnect automatically. | Enable Automatic Reconnect in Advanced settings and monitor whether the stream returns. Reconnect settings reduce manual recovery; they are not a continuous-uptime guarantee. (OBS Studio Overview Guide.) |
| OBS struggles to render the scene | Look for unnecessary sources, complex overlays, or oversized media that adds avoidable GPU work. | Remove what the scene does not need and use media sized sensibly for the intended output. (OBS Studio Overview Guide.) |
