A busy disk can matter if OBS is recording locally or reading video files from that drive, but YouTube’s guidance does not establish disk activity alone as a cause of viewer buffering or specify a minimum storage speed for live streaming. Diagnose the counter that rises when the problem occurs: OBS distinguishes rendering lag, encoding lag and network-dropped frames. Also check YouTube’s stream health, outbound upload capacity and latency settings before buying a faster drive.
First, determine whether the disk is involved
Disk activity is a hypothesis to test, not a diagnosis. It is relevant when the same drive is writing an OBS recording or replay buffer, or reading media files used in the stream. If the disk is busy for an unrelated reason, that coincidence does not show it is causing the stream symptom.

- Identify the workload. Check whether OBS is recording locally, using a replay buffer or reading media-source files from the busy drive.
- Compare timing. Note whether the disk activity and reported buffering begin and end together. This is useful context, but not proof of causation.
- Check the local recording. YouTube advises checking that an archive file is intact and that its size continues to grow during an encoder setup. If a recording stalls, fails an integrity check or stops growing, investigate the recording destination and free space.
YouTube’s published live-stream guidance does not provide a minimum disk throughput. Its bitrate recommendations describe the stream sent to YouTube, not the speed at which a storage drive must write.

Read OBS’s counters before changing hardware
During the symptom, open OBS’s Stats window and watch the separate counters for frames missed due to rendering lag, skipped frames due to encoding lag and network-dropped frames. OBS also shows disk-space information. The interface labels are available in the OBS Project’s current English locale source; the source is on the current branch, not pinned here to a particular OBS release.

OBS’s Help Portal explains that a rising dropped-frame counter with a yellow or red connection indicator points to a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. OBS’s encoding performance guide treats choppy output and an “encoding overloaded” warning as performance issues; neither is, by itself, proof of a slow disk.
Check outbound upload speed and connection stability
Your total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond the total bitrate and advises testing outbound upload speed: download capacity can be higher than upload capacity. Run the test under network conditions representative of the live stream, including other people or devices using the connection, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages.

For example, a stream configured at 8 Mbps needs more than 8 Mbps of reliable upload capacity; applying YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom means planning for at least 9.6 Mbps available for the stream. This is a bandwidth calculation, not a disk-speed requirement. Consult YouTube’s streaming tips and its live encoder settings.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 options, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, no more than 4 seconds. Test with movement and audio similar to the real stream, then monitor stream health. These settings affect the outgoing live stream; they do not establish how fast a local disk must be. Account for playback latency
A stream can look healthy at the broadcaster’s end while viewers still experience buffering. YouTube cautions that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. If OBS counters and YouTube stream health look stable, review the stream’s latency setting and gather details about which viewers, devices and connections are affected. When is a faster drive worth considering?
Consider an external SSD only if your workflow depends on local recording or disk-based media and the evidence points to that storage workload—for example, recordings stall or stop growing when disk activity spikes. The reviewed official guidance does not recommend a particular drive, specify a minimum disk speed or establish that buying an SSD fixes viewer-side YouTube buffering. If OBS instead shows network drops, investigate the connection; if rendering or encoding lag rises, investigate those performance paths first.
