Best Nothing OS 5.0 Settings to Change for Privacy, Performance and Battery

The best first changes in Nothing OS 5.0 are to audit camera, microphone and location access; reduce unnecessary notifications and lock-screen previews; keep the phone on the stable update channel; and use Battery Saver when power is genuinely low. These controls reduce exposure and background activity without relying on unverified battery claims. Nothing describes OS 5.0 as a major Android 17 release with clearer privacy indicators, updated permission controls and qualitative performance improvements, but it has not published a controlled battery-life percentage or benchmark for the release.

What Nothing OS 5.0 changes

Nothing OS 5.0 is based on Android 17. Its headline privacy changes are more visible camera, microphone and location indicators and revised permission controls. Nothing’s general-release notice says the stable rollout began with Phone (3) and is being staggered by region and device, so the exact arrival date and available features can differ between phones and countries.

Use the stable build for a normal daily phone. Nothing warns that beta software can affect stability, battery life and performance. A beta may be appropriate if you deliberately accept those trade-offs, but it is not the sensible default for a privacy- or reliability-focused setup.

Do this before changing settings

  • Install the latest stable update available for your model in Settings > System > System update.
  • Write down the apps you actually need for calls, messages, navigation, work and authentication. Those apps may legitimately require one or more sensitive permissions.
  • Check whether your phone is still completing post-update optimization. Judge battery behavior over several ordinary days, not from the first charge cycle after a major update.
  • Decide which profile fits the day: balanced daily use, privacy-first use, or travel/low-battery use.

1. Audit camera, microphone and location permissions

Permission review is the strongest privacy change because it limits direct access to sensors that can reveal what you are seeing, saying or where you are. OS 5.0’s indicators make access easier to notice, while the updated controls let you remove access that an app does not need for its core job.

Camera

Keep camera access for apps whose main function requires taking photos, scanning documents or joining video calls. Remove it from utilities, games, shopping apps and other software that has no obvious camera feature. If an app later needs the camera, Android will ask again; denying an unnecessary request does not permanently break the phone.

Microphone

Allow microphone access for calling, recording and voice-chat apps you use. Revoke it from apps that only display content or provide simple tools. Watch the privacy indicator while no recording should be taking place. An unexpected indicator is a reason to inspect the app’s permission and recent activity rather than assuming it is harmless.

Location

Use the least access that still works. A weather or mapping app may need location while in use; a navigation app may need it during an active trip. An app that does not provide a location-based function should not retain access simply because it requested it during setup. Location restrictions can also reduce background work, but the amount depends on the app and how often it polls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical permission rule

  1. Open an app’s permission list from its system app-information screen.
  2. Identify camera, microphone and location entries.
  3. Set each permission to the narrowest option that supports the feature you use, or deny it when the feature is irrelevant.
  4. Use the OS 5.0 privacy indicator as a live check whenever a sensitive sensor is active.
  5. Revisit permissions after installing a new app or enabling a new feature.

Do not promise a fixed battery saving from this audit. Some apps stop location or sensor work when access is removed; others may already be dormant. The privacy benefit is direct, while the energy benefit is variable.

2. Reduce notification and lock-screen exposure

Notifications are both a privacy leak and a source of background activity. Promotional alerts, repeated social updates and shopping reminders wake the display, trigger vibration or sound and keep attention on low-value events.

Turn off low-value alerts

Nothing documents the path Settings > Notifications > App settings. Select an app there and disable notifications that do not help you. Keep calls, security warnings, authentication prompts and other time-sensitive alerts enabled unless you have another reliable way to receive them.

Protect message previews

Review notification display options so private message text is not visible on the lock screen when the phone is unattended. A useful compromise is to show that an alert arrived while hiding its content until the phone is unlocked. This prevents a passerby from reading one-time codes, work messages or personal conversations without forcing you to open every notification.

Use categories instead of an all-or-nothing switch

Many apps separate direct messages from marketing, recommendations or live-event updates. Disable the noisy categories first. If an app still generates interruptions after its categories are reduced, turn off its notifications entirely and use the app manually when needed.

Fewer alerts can improve perceived performance because the phone handles fewer wakeups and interruptions. It can also delay information you expected to arrive immediately, so audit the result after a day of normal use.

3. Use Battery Saver deliberately

Battery Saver is an emergency and travel control, not a universal performance switch. It reduces background activity to extend the remaining charge, but restrictions can delay synchronization, background refresh and some notifications.

Add Battery Saver to Quick Settings

  1. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open expanded Quick Settings.
  2. Press the pencil icon to edit the tile layout.
  3. Find Battery Saver and move it into the visible tile area if it is not already there.
  4. Tap the tile to turn the mode on or off.

Nothing says the phone prompts users when the battery falls below 20 percent. You can enable it earlier for a long trip, outdoor event or outage when charging will be unavailable.

Choose when the trade-off is worth it

Situation Recommended action Likely trade-off
Normal day with access to a charger Leave Battery Saver off and control individual apps and notifications. More background activity, but normal sync and responsiveness.
Travel or a long day away from power Enable Battery Saver before the battery becomes critical. Some background work and notifications may be delayed.
Emergency charge below 20% Turn it on from Quick Settings and keep only essential connectivity and alerts. Maximum convenience loss, in exchange for more remaining runtime.

Battery Saver does not replace a permission audit. An app that repeatedly requests location or sends dozens of alerts may still be undesirable even when low-power mode is active.

4. Stay on the latest stable build

Check Settings > System > System update regularly and install the newest stable release offered for your device and region. Nothing says updates can add features and performance optimisations. They can also contain fixes for permission handling, notification behavior and power management.

OS 5.0’s rollout is staggered, so two otherwise similar phones may not show the update at the same time. Do not install a beta merely to obtain a feature sooner if battery consistency and reliability matter more than early access.

How to judge battery after an update

  1. Finish the update and allow the phone to complete normal app and system optimization.
  2. Use the phone normally for several days, including your usual mobile signal, screen brightness, calls and apps.
  3. Compare like-for-like days rather than one unusually heavy or light charge cycle.
  4. Look for a particular app with abnormal background activity before blaming the operating system.
  5. If drain remains abnormal, restart the phone, update apps, and temporarily remove a recently installed app to isolate the cause.

Nothing has not published a controlled battery-life percentage or OS 5.0 performance benchmark in the official material cited for this guide. Treat claims of a guaranteed percentage improvement as unsupported unless they identify a reproducible test, device, build and workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Preserve performance without aggressive task killing

Nothing’s OS 5.0 feature material describes better app launches, scrolling, touch response, multitasking and memory management. Those are qualitative product claims, not a measured benchmark. You can preserve the intended behavior with low-risk maintenance rather than repeatedly forcing apps closed.

Remove apps you no longer use

Unused apps can receive updates, schedule jobs and generate notifications. Uninstall software you no longer need, especially apps that request sensitive permissions or run persistent services. If you only need an app occasionally, remove it and reinstall it when necessary instead of letting it remain active indefinitely.

Reduce noisy background work

Start with notification categories and permission controls. This approach addresses the cause while allowing essential apps to remain available. Repeatedly swiping every app away can force apps to reload and may make launches slower; it is not a dependable performance optimization.

Keep storage and software orderly

  • Install app updates from the phone’s normal app store so they remain compatible with OS 5.0.
  • Remove duplicate downloads and abandoned offline media when storage is nearly full.
  • Restart after a major system update or when an app repeatedly freezes.
  • Investigate one misbehaving app at a time instead of changing many settings simultaneously.

These steps are sensible maintenance practices. They should not be presented as a guaranteed percentage increase in speed or battery life.

6. Review Glyph settings in one place

Nothing says the Glyph App centralizes Glyph settings. Open it and disable patterns, sounds or visual alerts that do not convey useful information. Repeated Glyph activity can create interruptions and may cause more wakeups, especially when many apps are allowed to trigger it.

Keep Glyph alerts that replace a notification you would otherwise check constantly, such as a priority contact or a time-sensitive reminder. Disable decorative or duplicate alerts first. The convenience cost is straightforward: fewer Glyph events mean less immediate signaling, while too many events can make important alerts harder to notice.

Choose a settings profile

Profile Privacy strength Battery impact Convenience cost Use it when
Balanced daily Keep required camera, microphone and location access; remove unnecessary permissions and promotional notifications. Moderate reduction in avoidable background activity. Essential alerts and normal syncing remain available. Most workdays and home use.
Privacy-first Remove optional sensor access and hide most lock-screen message previews; keep only trusted, necessary alerts. Potentially lower sensor and notification activity, varying by app. Some features require a permission request again; message content is less visible at a glance. Shared spaces, travel, or a phone containing sensitive work and personal data.
Travel/low-battery Use the privacy-first permission choices and keep only critical notifications. Battery Saver adds stronger background restrictions. Sync and some notifications may be delayed; app responsiveness can change. Long journeys, outages and charge below 20%.

A safe order for the first 15 minutes

  1. Open Settings > System > System update and confirm that you are on the latest stable build offered to your phone.
  2. Review camera, microphone and location access for every app you recognize; deny permissions unrelated to the app’s purpose.
  3. Open Settings > Notifications > App settings and switch off promotional or low-value categories.
  4. Hide lock-screen message content if someone could see your phone while it is unattended.
  5. Open the Glyph App and remove duplicate or decorative alerts.
  6. Edit Quick Settings so Battery Saver is available without searching through Settings.
  7. Use the phone normally for several days, then investigate individual apps if drain or missed alerts appear.

Troubleshooting common side effects

An app says a permission is required

Decide whether the feature is genuinely needed. Grant the permission temporarily while using that feature, then return to the narrowest setting that still works. A flashlight, calculator or document reader should not need permanent location access merely because another feature requested it.

Notifications arrive late

Check whether Battery Saver is enabled and whether you disabled the app’s notification categories. Turn off Battery Saver temporarily, restore only the necessary notification category and test again. Delayed background delivery is an expected trade-off of aggressive power restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone feels slower after changing settings

Confirm that Battery Saver is not active during normal use. Check whether you removed a permission required for an app’s normal operation, and update the app. Avoid responding by force-closing every application; that can increase reloads rather than improve multitasking.

Battery drain remains high after OS 5.0

Give the phone several ordinary days to settle after the update, then identify apps with unusual background activity. Review location access and notification volume first, because both can cause repeated work. If the problem began immediately after one app update, remove or update that app before changing system-wide controls.

Bottom line

Start with sensor permissions and notification exposure, stay on the stable OS 5.0 channel, and reserve Battery Saver for travel or genuinely low charge. Use Glyph controls and basic app maintenance to reduce avoidable interruptions without aggressive task killing. Nothing’s official material supports clearer privacy controls and qualitative performance improvements, but it does not establish a universal battery-life percentage, so measure your own phone across comparable days rather than relying on a promised number.
