For most local-AI builders, choose an NVIDIA RTX system first. It has the broadest documented support across llama.cpp, vLLM and PyTorch, and NVIDIA provides explicit guidance on matching VRAM, quantization and backend. If your priority is fitting very large models in a compact workstation, NVIDIA’s DGX Spark offers 64 GB or 128 GB of coherent unified memory and a published capability of inference up to 200 billion parameters on the 128 GB version. Apple’s Mac Studio with M4 Max is a strong quiet, high-bandwidth option; AMD Ryzen AI Max+ systems offer large shared memory on Windows but require more software choices; Qualcomm Snapdragon with GenieX targets low-power, platform-specific deployments.
There is no universal fastest accelerator. The useful comparison is the complete system: memory capacity and bandwidth, the runtime that supports your model, measured tokens per second on that exact workload, power and noise, price, and whether you can upgrade it.

Quick answer: which accelerator should you buy?
“Non-Chinese” in this guide means the vendors and products covered here—NVIDIA, AMD, Apple and Qualcomm. The country of origin of every component in a finished computer has not been independently audited, so treat the term as a scope description rather than a supply-chain certification.
| Platform | Best fit | Memory options | Software path | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA RTX-based system | Broad application compatibility and the least uncertain framework support | Dedicated VRAM; multi-GPU designs are possible | CUDA ecosystem, llama.cpp, vLLM and PyTorch | Large models may require expensive VRAM or multiple cards; discrete GPUs add power and noise |
| NVIDIA DGX Spark (GB10) | Compact workstation for very large local models | 64 GB or 128 GB coherent unified memory | NVIDIA’s optimized local-AI stack | Published capacity claims do not guarantee a particular tokens-per-second rate; system is not a conventional upgradeable desktop |
| AMD Ryzen AI Max+ | Windows users who need a large shared memory pool | OEM-dependent unified/shared memory configurations | ROCm, DirectML or Lemonade; NPU and iGPU paths are available | Setup and performance vary substantially by software route and exact OEM configuration |
| Apple Mac Studio M4 Max | Quiet operation, high memory bandwidth and simple unified-memory deployment | Apple unified memory; choose the capacity at purchase | Apple-supported local runtimes and projects that support macOS/Metal | Platform coupling and limited hardware upgradeability |
| Qualcomm Snapdragon with GenieX | Low-power, embedded or always-on inference | Device-specific system memory | GenieX through llama.cpp for community GGUF models or QAIRT for optimized NPU models | Model and device support must be verified; it is not a drop-in desktop GPU ecosystem |
If you are unsure, start by listing the models and context lengths you actually intend to run. Then select enough memory for the weights, runtime overhead and context, and only after that compare accelerator throughput.

Memory is the first constraint
A local model cannot run usefully unless its weights, runtime allocations and requested context fit in available VRAM or unified memory. A model that technically loads with no headroom can still fail when you increase context, enable a larger batch, use retrieval, or open another model.
What “70B on a desktop” really means
A 70-billion-parameter model is feasible on a desktop-class system only when the chosen quantization and runtime fit the machine’s usable memory. The parameter count alone does not tell you the requirement: quantization changes weight storage, while context length and runtime features consume additional memory. A single consumer GPU with insufficient VRAM will not become a 70B machine merely because the host computer has abundant system RAM; you may need unified memory, model offload, or multiple GPUs, each with a performance and configuration cost.
Plan a margin instead of sizing to the advertised capacity. Leave room for the context window you will use, the inference backend’s workspace and operating-system overhead. For a purchased system, confirm the actual memory configuration rather than relying on a processor name or a product family label.

Apple and some AMD systems expose a large pool that the CPU and accelerator can address together. That makes large models simpler to load, but the pool is shared and normally cannot be expanded later. A discrete NVIDIA design gives the accelerator very high software compatibility and predictable dedicated VRAM, yet a card with too little VRAM still forces offload or a second GPU. Unified memory trades hardware simplicity for stronger platform coupling; dedicated VRAM trades flexibility in platform choice for a more mature accelerator ecosystem.
NVIDIA: the safest default for software support
NVIDIA’s local-AI guidance starts with two decisions: determine the VRAM and performance target, then select an inference backend. That ordering matters because the same model can behave very differently in llama.cpp, vLLM and PyTorch.
Choose the quantization and backend together
- Set the memory target. Include model weights, context and runtime overhead, not just the headline parameter count.
- Choose the runtime. Use llama.cpp for broad GGUF support and straightforward local execution; use vLLM or PyTorch when their serving, batching or training features match your workload.
- Select the matching checkpoint format. NVIDIA recommends Q4_K_M quantized checkpoints for llama.cpp when you want a balance of performance and retained quality. For vLLM or PyTorch, NVIDIA points to NVFP4.
- Validate the exact build. Driver, CUDA, framework and quantization support can change results. Record versions before comparing throughput.
This is why “TOPS” or a theoretical FLOP number is a poor buying shortcut. A card with excellent peak arithmetic but an unsupported kernel, an awkward quantization format or insufficient VRAM may deliver a worse experience than a slower-looking part with a working backend.
DGX Spark for large models
NVIDIA’s DGX Spark uses the GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip and is specified at up to 1 FP4 petaFLOP of AI performance. It is offered with 64 GB or 128 GB of coherent unified memory. NVIDIA states that the 128 GB configuration can infer models up to 200B parameters and fine-tune models up to 70B parameters.

Those are vendor capability claims, not a promise of a particular token rate. Actual speed depends on model architecture, quantization, context length, batching and software version. The attraction is capacity in a compact, documented platform: you can address a large shared memory pool without building a multi-card workstation. The trade-off is that you are buying a tightly integrated system rather than a conventional desktop in which you can freely replace the GPU, memory and power supply.
AMD Ryzen AI Max+: large shared memory on Windows
AMD’s Ryzen AI Software supports deployment on the Ryzen NPU, integrated GPU or a hybrid of the two. AMD positions ROCm for larger models, high throughput, high memory bandwidth and heavy compute; DirectML and Lemonade are alternative routes that may be easier for particular Windows applications.
Verify the actual computer, not just the processor name
“Ryzen AI Max+ 395” identifies a processor family, not one fixed computer. OEMs can ship materially different memory capacities, cooling systems and firmware. Before buying, confirm the installed shared memory, whether it is user-upgradeable, the power limit and the exact driver support for your chosen runtime.
Pick a software route deliberately
- ROCm: the route AMD identifies for larger models and demanding compute. It can provide the most capable path, but setup and application support need checking for your operating system and framework version.
- DirectML: a Windows-oriented alternative that can simplify deployment in applications built around Microsoft’s graphics API. Kernel coverage and performance are workload-dependent.
- Lemonade: another deployment route in AMD’s materials, useful when an application already supports it.
- NPU or hybrid execution: attractive for efficient smaller models and background tasks, but not automatically the fastest way to run a large language model.
AMD is therefore compelling when a Windows laptop or mini-PC with a large shared pool is more important than a single standardized software stack. Benchmark the exact runtime you will use rather than assuming ROCm, DirectML and NPU execution are interchangeable.
Apple Mac Studio M4 Max: quiet, high-bandwidth local inference
Apple’s unified-memory design is well suited to users who want a quiet workstation and do not want to manage discrete GPU drivers. Memory capacity is selected at purchase, and the system is not designed for later accelerator upgrades, so size it for the largest model and context you expect to keep for several years.
Tom’s Hardware published a comparison on 30 July 2026 covering a Mac Studio with M4 Max, an NVIDIA GB10 system and an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (Strix Halo) system. In the workloads it tested, the Mac Studio delivered higher local-LLM decode throughput, with Apple’s high memory bandwidth identified as a major advantage. This is a dated, workload-specific result—not a universal ranking. Decode speed can change with the model, quantization, context length, prompt processing versus generation, runtime and software build.
Choose the Mac when low noise, macOS and a large unified-memory configuration matter more than CUDA-specific applications or future hardware expansion. Confirm that every framework, extension and quantized model in your workflow supports macOS and the Apple acceleration path before committing.

Qualcomm Snapdragon and GenieX: efficient, platform-specific inference
Qualcomm’s GenieX developer preview is an on-device generative-AI runtime for Qualcomm platforms. It can execute through the Hexagon NPU, Adreno GPU or CPU. Community GGUF models are supported through a llama.cpp plugin, while optimized NPU models use Qualcomm AI Runtime (QAIRT).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTwo distinct execution paths
- GGUF through llama.cpp: the more familiar path for community models, provided the target Snapdragon device and plugin support the required operations.
- QAIRT-optimized models: the path for taking advantage of Qualcomm’s NPU, with model conversion and runtime compatibility requirements.
This makes Snapdragon attractive for low-power, embedded and always-on workloads, where energy and thermals matter more than desktop-class peak throughput. It is not a drop-in replacement for a CUDA workstation. Verify the exact Snapdragon SKU, operating system, GenieX version, model format and supported operators before designing around it.
Compare systems on the dimensions that affect real use
| Decision factor | What to check | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Usable memory | VRAM or unified memory after the operating system and runtime reserve space | Determines whether the model and context fit without slow offload or failure |
| Bandwidth | Published memory bandwidth and the access pattern of your runtime | Generation can be memory-bound; bandwidth often matters more than peak arithmetic |
| Framework support | llama.cpp, vLLM, PyTorch, ROCm, DirectML, Metal, QAIRT and required versions | Unsupported kernels can erase theoretical hardware advantages |
| Measured throughput | Prompt-processing and decode tokens per second on your exact model and quantization | Different workloads produce different rankings |
| Power and noise | Sustained wattage, cooling design and fan behavior | A fast system that is too loud or expensive to run may be unsuitable for daily use |
| Total system price | Complete computer, memory tier, storage, cooling and any second GPU | A component price is not the cost of a usable local-AI workstation |
| Upgradeability | Replaceable GPU, memory, storage and power supply | Determines whether the system can follow larger models later |
No single price is authoritative across regions and OEM configurations. Compare complete systems at the memory tier you actually need, and include storage, cooling and electricity when evaluating a multi-GPU build.
Match the accelerator to the job
For the widest application compatibility
Choose an NVIDIA RTX-based system. It is the most defensible default when you expect to move among llama.cpp, vLLM, PyTorch and third-party local-AI applications. Prioritize enough VRAM for the model rather than buying the highest theoretical compute rating.
For a compact machine handling very large models
Consider the 128 GB DGX Spark configuration. Its documented 200B inference capability addresses the memory problem in a small integrated platform. Treat the published limit as a capacity statement, then benchmark your selected model before assuming interactive speed.
For a quiet workstation
Mac Studio M4 Max is a strong candidate when macOS compatibility is acceptable and you value low noise and high memory bandwidth. The July 30, 2026 comparison supports its performance in the tested workloads, not every model or runtime.
For Windows plus a large shared pool
Look at Ryzen AI Max+ systems, but compare the exact OEM memory configuration and decide whether ROCm, DirectML or Lemonade fits your applications. This option rewards buyers willing to configure and test their software stack.

- Write a workload sheet. Record each model, quantization, maximum context, expected concurrent users and whether you need fine-tuning or only inference.
- Set a memory floor. Reject systems that leave no headroom after the model, context and runtime allocations are loaded.
- Choose the software ecosystem. Select CUDA/NVIDIA, ROCm or DirectML/AMD, Apple’s acceleration path, or Qualcomm’s GenieX/QAIRT based on application support—not on marketing TOPS.
- Confirm the physical configuration. Check installed memory, cooling, power delivery, storage and upgrade options on the exact SKU.
- Install a pinned software stack. Record the operating-system, driver, framework and runtime versions so later measurements are reproducible.
- Run a representative test. Use the model, quantization and context length you will deploy. Measure prompt processing and decode separately.
- Check sustained behavior. Repeat the test long enough to reveal thermal throttling, fan noise, memory pressure and errors.
- Keep a fallback. Maintain a smaller quantized checkpoint or CPU/offload path for cases in which the preferred backend lacks an operator or runs out of memory.
How to benchmark without misleading yourself
Report the model name and revision, quantization format, context length, batch size, runtime and version, accelerator memory configuration, operating system and measurement date. Distinguish prompt-processing throughput from decode throughput; they stress hardware differently. A result from one benchmark suite cannot establish a universal winner, which is why the Mac Studio comparison and NVIDIA’s backend guidance should be read in the context of their stated workloads and configurations.

Common pitfalls and fixes
The model loads, then crashes when context increases
Reduce the context or batch, use a more compact quantization, or move to a system with more usable memory. Do not treat a successful short prompt as proof that the planned context will fit.
The accelerator is fast in a specification sheet but slow in practice
Check whether the runtime uses the accelerator at all, whether the quantization has optimized kernels, and whether the workload is memory-bound. Compare a supported backend and checkpoint before changing hardware.

A large unified-memory machine feels slower after other applications open
Shared memory is a common pool. Close memory-heavy applications, reduce context or concurrency, and leave headroom when choosing the capacity. Unified memory simplifies addressing but does not create unlimited bandwidth or capacity.
Bottom line
Buy NVIDIA when compatibility and predictable framework support are your priorities. Choose DGX Spark when a documented 128 GB unified-memory configuration and compact form factor solve your large-model requirement. Choose Mac Studio M4 Max for quiet, high-bandwidth local inference within macOS. Choose Ryzen AI Max+ for Windows and large shared memory if you are prepared to select and validate the software route. Choose Snapdragon with GenieX for efficient, device-specific deployments.
Whichever platform you select, size memory first, pair the quantization with a supported runtime, and benchmark the exact model and context you will use. That process is more reliable than ranking accelerators by TOPS or by a single headline benchmark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a desktop run a 70B language model?
Yes, if the selected quantization, model context and runtime fit within the system’s usable VRAM or unified memory. A desktop with insufficient accelerator memory may need offload or multiple GPUs, which changes speed and complexity.
Is Apple Silicon faster than NVIDIA for local LLMs?
Not universally. Tom’s Hardware reported higher decode throughput for a Mac Studio M4 Max than the tested NVIDIA GB10 and AMD Strix Halo systems on 30 July 2026, but that result is limited to its workloads, model settings and software versions.
What is the best backend for an NVIDIA local model?
Use llama.cpp for broad GGUF execution, with NVIDIA recommending Q4_K_M checkpoints for a performance-and-quality balance. Use vLLM or PyTorch when their serving or training features fit your workload; NVIDIA points to NVFP4 for those paths.
Does a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 guarantee a specific amount of memory?
No. It is a processor family, and OEM computers can differ in memory capacity, cooling, firmware and power limits. Confirm the exact configuration before comparing it with another system.
