Its interactive questions, visual models, hints, feedback, and gradually reduced scaffolding make you do the reasoning rather than watch someone else do it. Khan Academy is the best free, broad-curriculum alternative. It pairs instruction with practice, mastery tracking, and targeted review across elementary, secondary, and advanced mathematics.
These recommendations focus on documented learning loops that require learners to understand, practice, and apply mathematics. Camera-based or answer-first solver tools can be useful for checking a homework step, but they are not included as the main choices here because a comparable curriculum for durable problem-solving skill has not been established.

What makes a math app build problem-solving skill?
A problem-solving app does more than display a worked solution. It gives you a question that requires a decision, lets you try an approach, responds to the reasoning or result, and then asks you to use the idea again with less help. That loop develops several abilities that answer-only tools can bypass:
- Representation: translating a word problem into a diagram, table, equation, graph, or physical model.
- Strategy selection: deciding whether to estimate, factor, draw a picture, use a formula, or test cases.
- Error diagnosis: locating the step where reasoning went off track instead of merely replacing the final answer.
- Transfer: recognizing the same mathematical structure when the numbers or context change.
- Independence: solving after hints and examples are removed.
Both apps below support this loop, but they start from different places. Brilliant normally starts with an interactive problem and exploration. Khan Academy commonly starts with a video or text explanation and then moves into practice and mastery checks. Neither approach is automatically superior; the right choice depends on whether you need conceptual discovery, systematic coverage, or both.

1. Brilliant: best for making reasoning the lesson
How Brilliant teaches
Brilliant describes its method as “interactive, guided problem solving.” Instead of presenting a long lecture before you touch a question, a lesson typically introduces an idea through a visual or an experiment, asks you to predict or calculate something, and then gives feedback that helps you refine the model. The learning-resources description emphasizes visual models, guided feedback, and practice sets that remove scaffolding so you must solve more independently.
This format is particularly useful when your goal is to understand why a method works. A diagram can expose the structure of a fraction; a sequence of increasingly difficult prompts can reveal what an algebraic rule is doing; and a hint can point to a productive next step without supplying the whole solution. You still need to enter the answer or make the choice, so passive recognition is less likely to masquerade as mastery.
Who can start
Brilliant’s FAQ says readiness matters more than age. Learners who are comfortable with the four basic arithmetic operations can enter the main curriculum, which starts around fractions, decimals, and early pre-algebra. That makes it a reasonable fit for a child, teenager, or adult who has basic arithmetic fluency but wants a more visual route into formal mathematics. Someone who is still counting or frequently unsure of multiplication facts may need foundational practice first.

The math catalog is described as running from grade 4 foundations through grade 12, with calculus, probability, statistics, number theory, and other quantitative subjects beyond the school sequence. The breadth is substantial, but it is concentrated on mathematics, science, coding, and quantitative problem solving rather than the full school-subject range offered by Khan Academy.
How to use Brilliant for durable skill
- Choose a level that feels slightly challenging. Start with fractions or early pre-algebra if basic arithmetic is fluent. If you already solve those comfortably, select a topic where you regularly make mistakes rather than jumping immediately to the hardest course.
- Attempt before opening help. Write down what is known, what is being asked, and one possible representation. Give yourself enough time to test an approach; the point is to exercise strategy selection, not to race through screens.
- Use hints as prompts. After a hint, close it mentally and complete the step yourself. If a full explanation appears, restate the key idea in your own words before continuing.
- Keep an error log. Record whether the miss came from reading the problem, choosing a representation, carrying out arithmetic, or interpreting the result. Different errors require different practice.
- Repeat without scaffolding. Return to practice sets and solve a similar question without looking at the earlier explanation. Independence is the evidence that a guided lesson has become a skill.
Strengths and limits
- Strength: The problem appears early, so you spend more time making predictions and decisions than watching worked examples.
- Strength: Visual exploration can make abstract relationships concrete, especially in geometry, probability, functions, and number sense.
- Strength: Feedback and fading scaffolds create a natural path from supported attempts to independent work.
- Limit: The main path assumes basic arithmetic fluency; it is not designed as a complete remedial sequence for every elementary prerequisite.
- Limit: Free access has limits, and the current paid price is not stated here. Check the price and renewal terms shown for your country before subscribing.
- Evidence limit: No independent effect-size estimate comparable to the Khan Academy study figures is established in the available material. Treat the instructional design as a reason to try it, not as proof of a measured transfer advantage.
2. Khan Academy: best free, broad-curriculum option
How Khan Academy teaches
Khan Academy combines lessons with practice and mastery tracking. A typical sequence uses a video or text explanation, followed by questions that check whether you can apply the idea. Progress tools show which skills are emerging, practiced, or mastered, so you can return to a prerequisite instead of repeatedly guessing in a later unit.
The platform’s scope is its defining advantage. It covers elementary mathematics through advanced courses and also includes science, computing, humanities, and test preparation. If you need to move from place value to fractions, then to equations, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus in a coherent sequence, you can keep the same account and progress record. Resources are available in more than 50 languages, which can matter when mathematical vocabulary is the main barrier.

Evidence and what it does—and does not—show
Khan Academy’s impact page reports that a PNAS study of more than 200,000 students found that mastering more skills on the platform corresponded with higher state mathematics scores. A Khan Academy research post dated October 16, 2026 summarizes a 2026 PNAS study conducted by Khan Academy researchers and three university researchers: each skill moved to Proficient was associated with about 0.0031 standard deviations, or roughly 0.18 standard deviations for 60 skills. The same post summarizes independent randomized trials and a two-year middle-school trial.
Those figures describe associations and study results in particular settings; they do not guarantee that every learner will gain the same amount, nor do they establish that an app alone replaces a teacher, course, or sustained practice. They do provide a stronger published evidence base than is available for Brilliant in the material considered here. Use mastery status as a signal to guide practice, not as a permanent label of your ability.
How to use Khan Academy for problem solving rather than answer collection
- Find the prerequisite skill. Use the course sequence or skill search to locate the earliest concept that feels uncertain. Starting below your current class topic is efficient when a missing prerequisite is causing repeated errors.
- Watch or read actively. Pause before each worked step and predict what should happen next. Keep a notebook; copying a solution without predicting produces familiarity, not flexible knowledge.
- Complete practice without looking up answers. If you are stuck, write the known quantities, define the unknown, and try a representation before checking a hint or explanation.
- Use mastery feedback diagnostically. A low or declining mastery level tells you to review prerequisites or vary the problem types. It is not a reason to repeat the same question until you memorize a pattern.
- Schedule mixed review. Once a skill is marked proficient, include it in a later session with unrelated topics. Mixed practice tests whether you can recognize the method without a unit heading giving it away.
Strengths and limits
- Strength: Core access for students, families, and teachers is free, removing a subscription barrier.
- Strength: The course map spans elementary to advanced mathematics, making it suitable for remediation, school support, and long-term progression.
- Strength: Mastery tools and targeted practice make it easier to identify a prerequisite gap than a stand-alone puzzle collection.
- Strength: More than 50 language options can improve access for multilingual learners.
- Limit: The common sequence begins with instruction and then practice. Learners who need immediate discovery or puzzle-style exploration may find it less engaging than Brilliant.
- Limit: A mastery bar can encourage question grinding. You still need to explain methods, solve unfamiliar variants, and review errors to build transfer.
Which app should you choose?
Choose Brilliant when these statements describe you
- You want the act of solving a problem to occupy most of the lesson.
- You learn well from diagrams, simulations, visual patterns, and short interactive challenges.
- You are comfortable with basic arithmetic and want to develop reasoning in fractions, algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, or calculus.
- You prefer guided discovery and can tolerate being stuck long enough to test an idea.
- You are willing to verify the current paid-plan terms if the free access limit interrupts your routine.
Choose Khan Academy when these statements describe you
- You need a free resource with a broad, ordered curriculum.
- You are repairing a specific gap, such as fractions before algebra or algebra before trigonometry.
- You want progress and mastery indicators to organize independent study, tutoring, or classroom work.
- You need multilingual access or coverage outside mathematics as well.
- You value a larger published evidence base and understand that study associations are not a promise of identical individual gains.
Use both when coverage and problem solving are separate needs
A productive combination is to use Khan Academy as the map and Brilliant as the reasoning gym. Use the broad course sequence to identify the prerequisite and confirm definitions or procedures. Then use an interactive Brilliant lesson to attack the idea from a different representation. Do not count the same completed screen twice as evidence of mastery: finish by solving a fresh, mixed problem without hints and explaining why your method works.

A practical four-week routine
The following plan works with either app and keeps the emphasis on independent reasoning. Adjust the time to your age, course, and schedule.
- Week 1 — Diagnose. Pick one target, such as proportional reasoning or linear equations. Complete a small set of untimed questions. Label each error as conceptual, strategic, arithmetic, or reading-related.
- Week 2 — Build representations. Study the relevant lesson. For every new idea, create at least two representations: for example, an equation and a diagram, or a table and a graph. Solve before viewing a full explanation.
- Week 3 — Fade help. Repeat practice with fewer hints. Mix easy, medium, and difficult questions so you must choose a method rather than follow a visible template.
- Week 4 — Transfer check. Solve unfamiliar problems from another context. Write a short explanation of the method, one reason it works, and one condition under which it would fail. If you cannot do that, return to the prerequisite instead of simply advancing the progress bar.
How to tell whether you are actually improving
Completion counts are weak evidence. Track outcomes that reveal flexible performance:
- Unassisted accuracy: the percentage you solve correctly before hints or worked examples.
- Time to a productive start: how quickly you can identify knowns, unknowns, and a representation.
- Error quality: whether you can locate and correct a wrong step without being shown the answer.
- Transfer: performance on a new wording, diagram, or set of numbers.
- Explanation: your ability to justify a method in plain language, not just reproduce a formula.
Keep a dated sample of five to ten problems each week. Re-solve an earlier problem later without looking at your first attempt. Improvement is more credible when accuracy, independence, and transfer rise together.

Common pitfalls and fixes
Opening hints too soon
Symptom: You finish many lessons but freeze on a blank page. Fix: Set a minimum attempt period. Write a diagram, estimate, or first equation before requesting help, then close the hint and complete the step yourself.
Confusing recognition with recall
Symptom: An example looks obvious, but a changed problem does not. Fix: Cover the explanation, predict the next step, and practice mixed questions whose topic is not announced.
Grinding one question type
Symptom: Accuracy is high inside one lesson and low on tests. Fix: Alternate related skills and explain why a chosen method fits the problem.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallSkipping prerequisites
Symptom: Algebra errors are actually fraction, sign, or multiplication errors. Fix: Use Khan Academy’s course sequence or a short diagnostic set to find the earliest unstable skill, then practice it deliberately.
Treating a progress label as a verdict
Symptom: You stop studying a skill marked proficient or give up when the level falls. Fix: Recheck with delayed, mixed, and unfamiliar problems. Mastery is a performance you can demonstrate repeatedly, not a permanent identity.
Bottom line
Choose Brilliant if your priority is an interactive, visual environment in which guided problem solving is the central activity. Choose Khan Academy if you need the broadest free curriculum, structured mastery practice, language options, and the strongest published evidence base among these two choices. If you need both a curriculum map and challenging transfer practice, use Khan Academy to locate and sequence skills, then use Brilliant to deepen the reasoning—while verifying understanding with independent, mixed problems.
