Project64 is a sensible first choice for most Windows PC players, thanks to its Windows-focused package, controller support, save states, and choice of graphics plugins. Mupen64Plus is a cross-platform alternative for people comfortable configuring plugins and input, while ares is worth considering if accuracy and preservation are priorities. None of the available documentation proves that one emulator runs all of Banjo-Tooie with the fewest problems on current builds, so treat these as options to try—not a verified compatibility ranking.

If you use Windows and want the simplest place to begin, try Project64 first. If you prefer a cross-platform emulator and do not mind more setup, compare Mupen64Plus and ares on your own system. There is no independent current head-to-head test here that supports calling any of them the definitive Banjo-Tooie winner.

Why a game-specific compatibility claim needs caution
Banjo-Tooie depends on the CIC-NUS-6105 challenge-and-response process handled through the Nintendo 64 PIF. Technical documentation notes that the game can hang if this process is not implemented. It also records a graphics-freeze behavior involving Banjo-Tooie and Banjo-Kazooie. It also says the Mupen64Plus Next core may be less performant because it uses more accurate emulation. What you need to run Project64 on Windows
Project64’s repository lists these requirements: 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, a 1 GHz or faster Intel or AMD processor with SSE2, at least 2 GB of RAM, and graphics support through DirectX 8, OpenGL 3.3, or Vulkan 1.1, depending on the plugin. These are the project’s published requirements, not a guarantee of smooth Banjo-Tooie gameplay. Set up an emulator and controller
- Get the emulator from its official project source. Project64’s repository points to stable installers and nightly builds through its official site. Start with a current stable release and avoid third-party download bundles. For Mupen64Plus, begin at its official project site.
- Connect your gamepad before opening the emulator. Map the N64 controls in the emulator’s input settings. If Mupen64Plus does not detect the controller automatically, follow its joystick documentation. A USB gamepad is optional; check that it works with your operating system and chosen emulator.
- If graphics fail, check the driver and available backends. Update your graphics driver, then try the graphics options documented by your emulator or its per-game compatibility settings. Project64 lists multiple graphics backends, but no specific setting is established as a Banjo-Tooie fix. RetroPie’s plugin guidance should not be treated as a Windows-specific guarantee.
- Check more than startup. Confirm that the game progresses into gameplay and beyond early sections before relying on a setup. A successful boot alone does not test the game-specific behavior described in the N64 technical documentation.
Use game files from lawful sources
An emulator does not provide the game, and installing one does not grant rights to game data. Nintendo Support says, “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal,” and describes ROMs offered through peer-to-peer networks or third-party file links as unauthorized.
