RetroArch with the Mupen64Plus-Next core is the best starting point for most Super Mario 64 homebrew, demakes and ROM hacks. It supports common N64 image formats, soft-patching, save states, rewind, controller remapping and rumble, while using GLideN64 by default. When a particular hack needs a different accuracy path, switch to ParaLLEl-RDP/ParaLLEl-RSP through ParaLLEl-N64 or Project64.
There is no universal “runs every hack” emulator. N64 hacks can depend on graphics timing, controller behavior, microcode and the exact revision of the original game. Treat the emulator and renderer as per-game settings, and test the unmodified game before diagnosing a modified ROM.

Why Super Mario 64 hacks need different emulators
A normal cartridge image follows the assumptions made by the original game. A homebrew project or demake may replace levels, graphics, audio, game logic, loading behavior or memory usage. Some projects are distributed as patches that must be applied to a clean image; others are supplied as ready-to-run images. Even two hacks based on the same game can stress different parts of the emulator.
Graphics plug-ins also make a major difference. High-level emulation (HLE) translates expected N64 behavior into modern graphics commands and is usually faster. Low-level emulation (LLE) reproduces more of the original graphics and signal-processing behavior and can resolve problems that HLE misses, at a greater performance cost. Project64’s support guidance pairs ParaLLEl-RDP and ParaLLEl-RSP in LLE mode for accuracy, while recommending GLideN64 in HLE mode for performance and general play.

RetroArch and Mupen64Plus-Next: the default setup
Libretro describes Mupen64Plus-Next as an up-to-date Mupen64Plus port. It uses GLideN64 by default and offers ParaLLEl-RDP and Angrylion alternatives. The core accepts .n64, .v64 and .z64 files, supports soft-patching and provides save states, regular saves, rewind, input remapping and rumble.
Install the core
- Install RetroArch for your operating system from its official distribution channel.
- Open the online updater and install the Mupen64Plus-Next core. Core names and updater locations can vary slightly by RetroArch build.
- Set a writable directory for saves and states before launching a hack. Keeping these folders separate from your ROM archive makes backups and troubleshooting easier.
- Connect your controller, open the input settings and verify that the N64-style buttons, analog stick, triggers and rumble are detected.
Load a full ROM or apply a patch
- For a ready-to-run image, choose Load Content, select the
.n64,.v64or.z64file, and select Mupen64Plus-Next when RetroArch asks for a core. - For a patch, keep a legally obtained, unmodified base image available and follow the hack author’s patch format instructions. RetroArch’s soft-patching support can apply a compatible patch at launch without creating a permanently modified image.
- If the game reaches its title screen but saves do not persist, check RetroArch’s save directory permissions and confirm that you are not launching the content from a read-only location.
Choose a renderer
- GLideN64: Start here for broad compatibility and practical performance.
- ParaLLEl-RDP: Try it when a hack’s instructions specify it, when graphics are incorrect, or when accuracy matters more than speed.
- Angrylion: Keep it as another accuracy-oriented option when the other renderers show a project-specific fault.
Change one setting at a time and restart the content after switching renderers. A working configuration is easier to identify when you do not alter resolution, widescreen, texture packs and timing options simultaneously.
Project64 for Windows
Project64 is a free, open-source Nintendo 64 and Nintendo 64 Disk Drive emulator that is currently Windows-only. Its documented requirements include 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Several plug-ins require OpenGL 3.3, while ParaLLEl-RDP requires Vulkan 1.1. It includes controller support, save states and multiple renderer choices.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBasic configuration
- Install a current Project64 build and start it once so it can create its configuration folders.
- Open the controller settings and map the analog stick, C-buttons, D-pad, Z trigger, shoulder buttons, Start and rumble. Test the analog range in the same screen; a stick that is centered incorrectly can make Mario walk continuously.
- Open the graphics or plug-in settings. Use GLideN64 in HLE mode for the initial compatibility and performance test.
- For an accuracy-focused test, select ParaLLEl-RDP and ParaLLEl-RSP and use LLE mode as described in Project64’s support guidance. Ensure the graphics device meets the Vulkan 1.1 requirement.
- Launch the clean game first, then the hack. If the clean game works and the hack fails, treat the problem as project-specific rather than immediately reinstalling the emulator.
When Project64 is the better choice
Project64 is convenient if you use Windows, want a standalone application instead of a multi-system front end, or need to switch plug-ins quickly while testing a difficult hack. Its limitation is scope: it does not provide the cross-platform workflow of RetroArch, and a configuration that works for one hack may not be the right one for another.

ParaLLEl-N64 and Parallel Launcher
ParaLLEl-N64 is useful when a project needs a different accuracy path from the default Mupen64Plus-Next setup. Its documentation includes a compatibility option for legacy Super Mario 64 hacks, so it is worth trying when an older project shows a black screen, broken geometry or incorrect timing under another core.
Parallel Launcher is a convenience layer for hack-heavy libraries. It automates RetroArch configuration and aims to combine the ease of a standalone launcher with ParaLLEl-N64 and Mupen64Plus-Next. It is especially useful when you maintain many projects with different cores, renderers or patches. You still need a clean base image and the correct patch or project files; automation cannot repair an incompatible or incorrectly patched image.

Rosalie’s Mupen GUI
n64.dev lists Rosalie’s Mupen GUI as a Windows front end for Mupen64Plus. It can make standalone Mupen64Plus easier to manage, but it does not change the underlying compatibility characteristics of the Mupen64Plus engine or its plug-ins.
Platform comparison
| Platform | Practical route | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11, 64-bit | Project64 or RetroArch | Project64 documents OpenGL 3.3 for several plug-ins and Vulkan 1.1 for ParaLLEl-RDP |
| macOS | RetroArch or standalone Mupen64Plus v2.6.0 | Standalone Mupen64Plus has a documented macOS build |
| Linux | RetroArch, standalone Mupen64Plus v2.6.0 or ares | All three have documented Linux availability |
| FreeBSD | Standalone Mupen64Plus v2.6.0 | FreeBSD support is documented for the standalone build |
| Android | RetroArch with Mupen64Plus-Next | Libretro documents separate GLES 2.0 and GLES 3.0 variants |
On Android, choose the GLES variant that matches the device and RetroArch build. Libretro warns that the GLES 2.0 build can show graphical issues on hardware capable of GLES 3.0, so do not assume the older variant is safer simply because it has a lower number.

Confirm the base image
Project64’s support guidance recommends confirming that the unmodified game works before diagnosing a ROM hack. Launch the clean image with the same emulator and controller. If it also fails, fix the emulator, renderer or file problem first. If only the hack fails, check the project’s required base revision and patch method.
Try the project’s required core or plug-in
Switch between Mupen64Plus-Next, ParaLLEl-N64 and Project64 rather than changing every setting at once. Within Project64, test GLideN64 HLE first, then ParaLLEl-RDP and ParaLLEl-RSP in LLE mode for accuracy. In RetroArch, test GLideN64, ParaLLEl-RDP and Angrylion separately.

Remove enhancements
Disable widescreen, texture packs, high-resolution internal rendering, extra anti-aliasing and any optional post-processing. Batocera notes that widescreen hacks can be glitchy and recommends native or modest resolutions on constrained hardware. Once the hack works at a conservative setting, re-enable enhancements one by one.
Check the patch and file format
A patch made for one base image will not reliably work with a different revision, byte order or region. Keep the original file unchanged, apply the patch exactly as instructed, and verify that the resulting file is the format expected by the emulator. Mupen64Plus-Next’s support for .n64, .v64 and .z64 covers the common byte-order formats, but it does not make an incorrectly patched image valid.
Separate performance problems from compatibility problems
If the game boots but stutters, lower internal resolution and disable texture enhancements before changing cores. Batocera describes N64 emulation as experimental and says accuracy issues can occur regardless of hardware. RetroPie notes that lr-mupen64plus-next is actively developed and more accurate but can be less performant than standalone Mupen64Plus. A slower frame rate is therefore not proof that the ROM is broken.

Resolution, widescreen and controller trade-offs
Native resolution is the most reliable baseline. Increasing internal resolution improves clarity but can impose a significant performance cost, particularly on small computers and Android devices. Widescreen patches alter the game’s assumptions and may produce stretched geometry, missing objects or other glitches. Enable them only after the unmodified aspect ratio works.
An N64-style USB controller can make analog movement and the unusual C-button layout feel closer to the original hardware. Regardless of controller type, calibrate the analog stick, verify the Z trigger and map rumble separately. Keep a keyboard shortcut or alternate controller profile available so you can recover if a hack’s default mapping is unusable.
Quick Recap
A repeatable per-hack workflow
- Read the project’s required base game, region, revision, patch format, emulator and renderer.
- Back up the clean image and apply the patch without overwriting the original.
- Start with RetroArch Mupen64Plus-Next and GLideN64 at native resolution unless the project specifies another setup.
- Verify controller input, save creation and the first area of the game.
- If graphics or timing are wrong, try ParaLLEl-N64 or Project64 with ParaLLEl-RDP and ParaLLEl-RSP in LLE mode.
- Disable widescreen and high-resolution enhancements while troubleshooting.
- Record the core, renderer, region, patch version and settings that work. Apply those settings only to that hack instead of changing your global defaults.
What to remember
- Mupen64Plus-Next in RetroArch is the strongest general starting point for Super Mario 64 homebrew and demakes.
- Project64 is the practical standalone Windows choice and provides clearly documented renderer alternatives.
- GLideN64 favors speed and broad use; ParaLLEl-RDP and ParaLLEl-RSP favor accuracy and can require stronger graphics support.
- Test the clean game before blaming a hack, then change one core, plug-in or enhancement at a time.
- Parallel Launcher can simplify a library of hacks, but it cannot replace the correct base image or patch.
- Keep resolution and widescreen conservative until the project is stable.
