Do not assume Alexa+ has the same language coverage as classic Alexa: Amazon says Alexa+ is currently available only in English.

No official source in the available documentation provides an independent, cross-assistant test of multilingual accuracy in loud rooms. Treat interruption handling and recognition in your own environment as a purchase check, not as a settled ranking.
What “multilingual” should mean before you choose
Two products can both advertise many languages while behaving very differently. Check five separate capabilities:

- Speech output: can it answer aloud in that language, and is a suitable voice available?
- Language switching: can you change languages between turns without opening settings?
- Mixed-language turns: can one utterance contain two languages, or must each turn stay in one configured language?
- Actions: can it still set timers, search, control media, manage a calendar or operate smart-home devices after switching?
“Supports 99 languages” is therefore not the same as “every consumer app can conduct a bilingual conversation in 99 languages.” Google’s 99-language figure belongs to its Live API capability documentation. Google’s consumer announcement describes conversations in up to two languages on one device, while some voice controls remain unavailable in some languages.
ChatGPT Voice: strongest for free-form bilingual conversation
What it does well
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Voice as a natural, free-form voice conversation. Its Live mode can listen while speaking, so you can interrupt, correct a phrase or change direction without waiting for a long answer to finish. That turn-taking makes it particularly useful for language practice, translation drills, role-play and brainstorming while your hands are occupied.
You can choose a preferred language for recognition and then ask ChatGPT during the conversation to speak another language. That lets you say, for example, “Explain this in Spanish, then give me the English equivalent,” without repeatedly navigating a language menu. Web search and memory can be available in voice conversations when those features are enabled for your account.

OpenAI’s help material lists additional Live voices for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish. Voice availability varies by region and account, so the list should not be read as a guaranteed worldwide catalog or as a fixed count of supported consumer languages.

How to start a multilingual session
- Open the current ChatGPT app and tap the Voice or Live control.
- In voice settings, select the language you want the app to recognize most reliably. The exact menu label can differ by app version.
- Begin with a clear instruction such as, “Speak with me in Spanish, but explain difficult words in English.”
- Test an interruption: start an answer, then say “switch to English” before it finishes. Confirm that recognition, output and turn-taking all change as expected.
- If you need a factual answer, ask whether web search is being used and verify the result; voice fluency does not make an answer authoritative by itself.
Where it fits—and where it does not
ChatGPT Voice is the best first choice when the central task is conversation rather than controlling a house full of devices. It can be hands-free inside the app and may continue in the background, but it is not equivalent to a dedicated wake-word speaker in every operating-system state. Locked-screen behavior, background permissions, account plan and regional rollout can change what is available.
Gemini Live: broad documented language reach with Google connections
Language behavior
Google says Gemini Apps can understand and reply in any supported language when you speak in Gemini Live, regardless of the language setting used elsewhere in the app. Its product announcement describes Gemini Live conversations in up to two languages on the same device and an expansion to more than 40 languages and app connections. Separately, Google’s 2026 Live API capabilities documentation lists 99 supported languages and says native-audio models can switch languages naturally during a conversation.
Keep those statements in their proper scope. The 99-language number describes the Live API, not a promise that the consumer Gemini app exposes every language, voice or extension in every country. Google also notes that features such as voice settings are not available in every language.

Practical setup
- Open Gemini on a compatible phone and start Gemini Live.
- Tell it the conversation rule you want: “Use English for technical terms and Spanish for the rest,” or “Answer in whichever language I used in my latest sentence.”
- Ask a short question in each required language before relying on it for a long task. Check names, dates and proper nouns separately.
- Try a cross-language action, such as asking for a calendar item or a search, because language understanding and app-action support can have different limits.
- If a voice option or extension is missing, check the language, country, device and account settings rather than assuming the model cannot understand the language.
Best use cases
Gemini Live is a strong fit for Android users who want spoken conversation connected to Google services. It is also attractive when two household languages must coexist on one device. The important qualification is that “up to two languages” describes the announced consumer behavior; it does not mean unlimited code-switching or equal feature support in every pair.

Siri: the practical choice inside Apple’s ecosystem
Established Siri versus Siri AI
Apple’s feature-availability matrix lists Siri in many country and language variants, including Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English variants, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese. This established Siri layer is useful for calls, messages, timers, navigation and device controls when the requested language and region are supported.
The newer Siri AI experience is a separate rollout. Apple’s September 2026 newsroom announcement describes a beta beginning in English on Apple-Intelligence-enabled devices, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support scheduled next. A phone can therefore offer classic Siri in a language while the newer conversational AI features remain unavailable in that same language.
AirPods and live translation
Apple also documents Live Translation with AirPods, which lets users hear nearby speech translated into their preferred language in real time. This is a translation-earbuds use case rather than proof that every Siri command supports unrestricted bilingual dialogue. Device generation, operating-system version, paired iPhone and region all matter.
Apple setup checklist
- Update the iPhone, Watch and AirPods to versions that support the feature you want.
- Open Settings and review Siri language, voice and listening options; labels vary by operating-system release.
- For Siri AI, confirm that the device supports Apple Intelligence and that the feature is enabled in your region.
- For AirPods translation, pair the supported AirPods with the correct iPhone, set your preferred language and test a short nearby conversation.
- Test commands from the lock screen, Watch and earbuds separately. A language that works in one context may not expose every action in another.
Alexa and Alexa+: best for wake-word household control, not equivalent AI language coverage
Classic Alexa
An Echo speaker is purpose-built for hands-free use: say the wake word, wait for the light or tone, and issue a command without picking up a phone. Amazon’s developer documentation lists locale-specific interfaces across Arabic, German, English variants, Spanish variants, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Dutch and Portuguese. The table is interface-specific, so a particular device, skill or smart-home action may support fewer languages.

Classic Alexa is a sensible choice when the main requirement is “turn on the lights,” “set a timer” or “play music” from across a room. It is less suitable when you want a long, context-rich bilingual discussion, because skills and commands can impose language-specific limits.
Alexa+ is a separate product question
Amazon’s consumer FAQ says, “Alexa+ is currently only available in the English language.” Do not use the broad classic-Alexa locale table as evidence that Alexa+ offers the same multilingual conversation capability. Availability can also depend on subscription status, country, device generation and rollout stage.
Household language setup
- Check the language or locale assigned to the specific Echo device, not just the language on your phone.
- Review each smart-home skill’s supported language and account region.
- Say a short command in the target language, then test a follow-up command that depends on context.
- If two languages are needed, verify whether the device supports a bilingual mode or requires switching the locale; do not assume it will freely alternate languages.
- For Alexa+, confirm current English-only availability before paying for or planning around its conversational features.
Which assistant should you pick?
Choose ChatGPT Voice when…
- You want the most natural open-ended conversation or structured language practice.
- You need to ask for a language switch during the session.
- You value interruption-friendly dialogue more than a built-in wake-word speaker.
- Your required language, voice and account plan are available in your region.
Choose Gemini Live when…
- You use Android or Google services and want spoken access to connected apps.
- You need two languages on one device and can accept feature differences by language.
- You want the broadest documented language ceiling, while understanding that the 99-language figure is for the Live API.
Choose Siri when…
- Your phone, watch, earbuds and car workflows are already Apple-based.
- Fast device actions are more important than a long AI discussion.
- You specifically want AirPods Live Translation and have compatible hardware and software.
- You can separate established Siri language support from the still-staged Siri AI rollout.
Choose Alexa when…
- A dedicated Echo wake word and room-wide smart-home control are your priority.
- Your household uses one of the documented Alexa locales and the skills you need support it.
- You do not require Alexa+ to converse in a language other than English.
How to test multilingual performance before relying on it
Run the same five-minute test on any assistant you are considering. Use the exact languages, devices and room where you will use it.
- Recognition: say a normal sentence, a name and a number in each language.
- Switching: change languages between turns without opening settings.
- Mixed turn: include a borrowed word or phrase from the other language.
- Interruption: interrupt a long answer and give a correction.
- Action: set a timer, create a reminder or control a supported device after switching languages.
- Recovery: deliberately use an unsupported voice or unclear phrase and see whether the assistant asks for clarification instead of guessing.
Repeat the test with background music or a running appliance if that reflects your home. There is no independent cross-assistant noisy-environment benchmark in the cited official material, so your own microphone, room acoustics and accent are decisive.

Privacy, transcripts and availability checks
Voice assistants generally send at least some audio or transcript processing to cloud services, although the exact path differs by feature and device. Before enabling background conversation, review the product’s current controls for conversation history, transcript deletion, microphone permissions and personalization. A wake-word speaker and a phone app can have different retention settings.
Confirm all of the following before treating a language feature as dependable:
- your country and account region;
- the app and operating-system version;
- the device generation and connected accessories;
- whether the language applies to recognition, speech output, AI conversation and actions separately;
- whether the feature is beta, paid, invitation-only or limited to a particular plan.
Language tables and beta schedules change quickly. Recheck the manufacturer’s current availability pages immediately before deployment, especially for Siri AI, Alexa+ and Gemini voice settings.
