Best MP4 Codec and Audio Format for a YouTube 24/7 Playlist Stream

For prepared playlist files, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio at 48 kHz is a practical default. Live ingestion has separate codec, bitrate, keyframe, and audio requirements.

For playlist files you prepare and upload, use an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio at 48 kHz as a practical default. But the file format and the format sent by a live encoder are separate choices: YouTube’s live-ingest guidance lists codecs and audio settings by protocol. An MP4 playlist file does not mean the live stream itself is sent as MP4.

Choose settings for the workflow you are configuring

A 24/7 playlist setup has two format decisions: how the source videos are encoded and how the encoder sends the live feed to YouTube. The upload recommendations apply to prepared video files; the live settings apply to the outgoing stream.

Workflow Video Audio What the setting describes
Prepared video file for upload MP4 container; H.264 recommended AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio; 48 kHz The uploaded file and its encoding
Live stream over RTMP/RTMPS H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; up to 60 fps AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 The stream sent from the encoder to YouTube
Live stream over HLS H.264 or HEVC AAC, AC3, or EAC3 A separate live-ingest protocol with segmenting requirements

These are YouTube’s published options, not a claim that one codec always looks or sounds best. The right live settings depend on protocol support, encoder equipment, target resolution and frame rate, and stable upload capacity. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations and live encoder settings describe different workflows.

Recommended settings for playlist video files

For a straightforward SDR playlist, prepare files as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio at 48 kHz. YouTube’s upload recommendations also specify progressive scan, High Profile, two consecutive B frames, closed GOP with a GOP of half the frame rate, CABAC, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Match the file’s frame rate to the rate at which it was recorded.

  • Use MP4 with no edit lists and place the moov atom at the front of the file (“Fast Start”).
  • Use progressive H.264 video with the recommended profile and encoding characteristics.
  • Use an audio format accepted for uploads—AAC-LC is a straightforward default—and 48 kHz sampling.
  • Keep your original source files. Re-encoding can reduce quality, so only convert when a file’s format or playback compatibility requires it.

These settings describe upload files; they do not specify the outgoing live encoder settings. Check the current YouTube upload encoding recommendations if your workflow depends on a particular audio codec or file characteristic.

RTMP or RTMPS

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.

For live audio, YouTube specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Its recommended audio bitrate is 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Select the channel layout you actually use; a stereo programme does not benefit from being labelled 5.1.

Output AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube-recommended live-ingest bitrates for the listed codec and output combinations, not guarantees of picture quality or universal settings for a 24/7 stream. The same page also gives minimums. Choose from the full table for your intended resolution, frame rate, and codec, then test that output on your encoder and connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.

Use HLS only when the workflow calls for it

YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. It accepts H.264 or HEVC video with AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. HLS requires TS segments between one and four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. This concerns live ingestion; it does not make the source playlist file an HLS file. Review YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.

Check bandwidth and stream health before leaving a stream unattended

A stable upload connection matters as much as the codec settings. YouTube recommends running a speed test and keeping 20% of upload capacity available beyond the primary stream, backup stream, and the stream’s bitrate needs. A network disruption can break a live stream, so account for the encoder, connection, and any backup path rather than sizing the connection to the video bitrate alone. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing in advance and monitoring stream health; its encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the live-ingest protocol and confirm that your encoder supports its codec and audio options.
  2. Set the target resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio sample rate/channel layout for that protocol.
  3. Run a test stream before relying on the playlist continuously. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and listen to the audio.
  4. Confirm the connection has headroom and that the audio and video remain in sync through a longer test.

Common format and continuity problems

  • MP4 uploads but the live encoder rejects the chosen format: MP4 is a file container, not a live-ingest protocol. Configure the encoder for a codec and settings supported by RTMP/RTMPS or HLS.
  • Audio is unavailable or unsupported: Check the ingest protocol’s accepted audio codecs, sample rate, and channel layout. Upload-file guidance and live-ingest guidance do not use identical sample-rate recommendations.
  • Stream health is unstable: Check sustained upload capacity, bitrate, and the recommended 20% reserve. Reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, then test again.
  • Keyframe or bitrate settings do not match guidance: For RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; select bitrate from the current YouTube table for the output format.
  • A 24/7 stream stops after a network interruption: YouTube warns that network disruptions can break a stream. Test recovery and backup arrangements rather than assuming a file codec can prevent a connection failure.

Copyright and channel-policy checks still apply

Correct encoding does not grant permission to stream the music, video, or other material in a playlist. Confirm you have the rights needed for continuous public streaming, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before scheduling a 24/7 broadcast. Repeated or reused material can raise policy questions independent of whether the file is MP4, H.264, or AAC.
