A black screen between playlist videos does not automatically mean YouTube is at fault. Find the first place the blank appears: the playlist or source, the encoder output, a local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, or only viewers’ playback. That evidence points to the stage to investigate; YouTube’s published guidance does not document a playlist-transition setting that guarantees gapless playback.
What can cause a black interval between playlist items?
The exact cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone. A plausible workflow-level cause is that one video ends before the next is ready, or that the encoder changes sources or scenes during the handoff. These are possibilities to check, not causes confirmed by YouTube’s documentation. Start by inspecting the playlist timeline and the signal at the transition rather than changing settings or buying hardware.

If the blank is already present in the source or encoder output, focus on the playlist, files, and encoder path. If those are continuous but the YouTube preview or viewers’ playback is not, look later in the delivery chain. YouTube notes that network congestion can affect a live stream even when the connection can sustain its average bitrate; that makes the network worth checking, but does not establish it as the cause of a boundary-specific gap. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder, archive, and outbound connection.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Inspect the source and playlist boundary. Check that the outgoing file ends normally and the next item is scheduled to start when expected. Look for blank frames, a delayed file opening, or a gap inserted by the playlist or automation system.
- Watch the encoder output during a handoff. Check the preview or program output at the exact transition. Confirm the next source becomes active, and look for encoder errors or unusually high CPU load. YouTube advises creators to check the signal inside the encoder and review errors and CPU use. YouTube encoder settings and monitoring guidance covers testing and stream health.
- Compare with a local recording or archive. If the blank appears in the recording, investigate the source and encoder path. If the recording is clean, compare it with the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then check the outbound connection. This comparison helps locate the stage where the problem first appears; it does not, by itself, prove a particular cause.
- Test a representative transition before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends previewing before going live, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring audio and video. Include an actual playlist handoff in the test rather than checking only a static segment. YouTube’s live-streaming setup tips describe previewing and monitoring.
- If the encoder looks healthy, test the outbound connection. YouTube recommends checking outbound internet strength when the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder. Compare what happens in the Live Control Room with reports from viewers.
Use stream settings as checks, not as a transition fix
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. This is general encoder guidance, not a documented fix for black frames between playlist items. Check the interval if you are reviewing encoder configuration, but do not treat changing it as proof that the handoff problem is solved. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Latency is also not a guaranteed cure. YouTube explains that lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer and can make viewers more likely to experience buffering. A higher-latency setting may help stability in some circumstances, but YouTube does not document it as a fix for playlist-boundary black screens. See Understand live streaming latency and Manage live stream settings.
What viewer reports can tell you
Ask whether the blank appears for one viewer or several, and compare reports with the encoder, local archive, and Live Control Room preview. A clean encoder output and archive alongside a problem in the YouTube preview or playback shifts attention to delivery or playback rather than the playlist source. A problem reported only on one viewer’s device is less evidence of a source-wide failure. These are diagnostic comparisons, not a definitive YouTube rule; use stream-health messages and the observed signal to narrow the cause.

What not to assume or buy
- A black interval alone does not establish that YouTube caused it.
- A short gap at a handoff does not prove the playlist scheduler, encoder, or network is responsible; check where it first appears.
- YouTube’s general recommendation of professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events does not show that a new encoder will fix this particular symptom.
- The official guidance cited here does not identify a YouTube switch that guarantees seamless transitions between videos played by a third-party playlist system.
Or let it run in the cloud
