Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast from a Mac mini, play the local file in OBS Studio, send OBS’s encoder feed to YouTube Live Control Room, and monitor the preview and stream health. Your Mac mini must stay powered on and connected while it plays and encodes the video. Before setup, check that YouTube Live is enabled for your channel; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
What you need before you start
- A Mac mini that can play the complete video while running OBS at your chosen settings. No specific Mac mini generation is assumed; test your actual file and configuration on the machine you plan to use.
- OBS Studio, the local video file, and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the event. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
YouTube receives an encoder feed; OBS plays and encodes the video on the Mac mini. It is not a direct file upload that becomes a live broadcast.

Schedule the stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. If you want an upcoming event page, open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming so viewers can find it and opt into a reminder. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Set the title, description, visibility, and schedule. Choose public, unlisted, or private according to who should be able to find or view it. Check the privacy setting before testing; a test intended only for you should not be public.
- In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the password and address used by the encoder to send the feed. Keep it secret: anyone who gets it may be able to send content to your channel. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room, then replace it in OBS. YouTube: Manage your live stream settings
Prepare the video in OBS
- Install and open OBS Studio, then create a scene for the broadcast. OBS supports macOS and common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. OBS Project: Media Sources
- In the Sources area, add a Media Source and select the local video file. Check that it appears correctly in the preview and fits the canvas. The Media Source is intended for adding media files to OBS scenes.
- For a single video, leave Loop off if it should play once. Turn on Loop only if you want the file to start over automatically after it reaches the end. OBS also offers a setting to restart playback when the source becomes active; enable it if you need the clip to begin at the start whenever that source is activated.
- For a playlist, add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist and looping behavior. VLC must be installed for the VLC source to appear in OBS. Test the playlist order and transitions before the scheduled broadcast.
- Confirm that the intended audio is audible in OBS’s meters and preview. Check the start, middle, and end of the file; a video that plays silently or stops early in a local test will do the same in the stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube and choose stream settings
- In OBS, open Settings and the Stream section. Select the YouTube service or the relevant YouTube preset if available, then enter the stream key from Live Control Room. If using a custom configuration, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the appropriate fields. Exact OBS labels can change between versions.
- In OBS output settings, use CBR (constant bitrate) and set a keyframe interval of 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for ingest. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the file and that the Mac and connection can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 recommended bitrates are below; these are recommendations, not performance guarantees for a particular Mac mini or internet connection.
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommendation | YouTube AV1 or H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. For ordinary prerecorded 1080p SDR, use Rec. 709 and avoid adding 4K or HDR unless the source, encoder, Mac hardware, and network are all prepared for it. YouTube’s listed audio options are AAC or MP3; use AAC for 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. Use YouTube’s official settings guide for the full codec and resolution-specific requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check upload capacity and test the complete setup
- Measure upload performance, not just download speed. The stream’s bitrate must fit the available outbound bandwidth; YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom rather than using the entire measured upload capacity. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Run a test with the same video, audio, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and network you expect to use. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the scheduled event; these are preparation recommendations, not technical prerequisites. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Start OBS streaming and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event. Verify moving video, audio, the correct scene, and stream-health messages. Check the watch page and, where relevant, mobile playback as well.
- Keep OBS and YouTube Studio visible or available during the broadcast so you can monitor the output. Avoid changing scenes, settings, or network connections midstream unless you need to correct a problem.
Start and end the broadcast cleanly
- Start the encoder from OBS at the planned time, then confirm the incoming feed and preview in Live Control Room. Start the event in YouTube Studio when the stream is ready.
- When the program is over, end the live event in YouTube Studio and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube’s operational guidance says to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Confirm the ending state in Studio and check that the archive is present; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube: Manage your live stream settings
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, any live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and whether first-time activation has finished. It can take up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that OBS has the correct YouTube service or ingest URL and the current stream key. If the key was reset, update it in OBS. Keep the key private.
- Video stutters or stream health reports problems: Confirm the actual upload bandwidth can sustain the selected bitrate with the recommended 20% headroom. Lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed, then retest.
- The file ends and the stream goes blank: For a single Media Source, enable Loop if the video must repeat. If using a playlist, confirm its entries and loop setting in the VLC Video source and verify VLC is installed.
- There is no audio: Check that the source has an audio track, OBS meters move during playback, and the selected output audio device and format are appropriate. Test the stream preview with sound before the event.
- The test appears publicly: Set the stream’s visibility appropriately in Live Control Room before testing, then verify the watch page visibility before promoting or starting the event.
OBS on a Mac mini versus other approaches
OBS is a practical local-file option because it can play a media source in a scene and loop it, while a VLC source can manage a playlist when VLC is installed. YouTube also lists Ecamm as Mac live-production software, but that directory listing alone does not establish that every Ecamm edition supports every prerecorded-file workflow. Compare the specific edition’s file playback and playlist controls, production features, support, and current terms before choosing. YouTube: Live streaming tools and services

A Mac mini workflow gives you control over local files and OBS scenes, but the computer must remain running and connected. For unattended continuous prerecorded playout, YouTube’s tools directory also lists cloud services such as Gyre; verify current features and terms directly before relying on one. AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream is a separate specialized hardware option that YouTube describes as able to schedule prerecorded media and stream directly without a computer. Neither a cloud service nor an appliance is required for the Mac mini method.
Rights and YouTube policy still apply
You are responsible for having the rights to the video and audio and for complying with YouTube policies. A prerecorded file does not bypass copyright enforcement or other channel rules. Confirm that the material is authorized for livestreaming and that the selected privacy setting matches your intent before going live.
