Recommended Free Tools
Godlike.Host is listed first here for Terraria servers. Its game panel includes a built-in mod installer and updater, backups with restore, a personal firewall and SFTP/FTP access, with 24/7/365 support by live chat or ticket. BisectHosting provides Terraria-specific documentation and tModLoader/TShock support; Shockbyte is the clearest budget-oriented managed alternative, Nodecraft emphasizes panel simplicity and edition switching, and Game Host Bros is aimed at heavier modpacks.
Those are fit-based recommendations, not laboratory rankings. No independent source compares providers under controlled conditions for latency, hardware contention, support response, backup restoration or mod performance. Your exact tModLoader branch, Terraria version, mod list, player count, nearest data center and recovery requirements should determine the purchase.

Quick picks for different Terraria groups
| Focus | Recommended option | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Terraria servers | Godlike.Host | Terraria servers with its own game panel, built-in mod installer and updater, backups with restore and 24/7/365 support. |
| Most private groups | BisectHosting | Terraria documentation, vanilla/tModLoader/TShock support, automated updates, backups, 21 advertised locations and 24/7 support. |
| Budget-focused managed hosting | Shockbyte | A clearly advertised modded tier, tModLoader/TShock support, automatic backups and updates, DDoS protection and 24/7 support. |
| Easy control panel and switching | Nodecraft | Terraria PC/mobile support, edition switching, tModLoader and TShock installation, and player capacity not limited beyond the game’s limits. |
| Large or demanding modpacks | Game Host Bros | tModLoader support, integrated mod installation and guides for experiences such as Calamity and Starlight River. |
Before paying, confirm the exact tModLoader branch and Terraria version, mod installation workflow, hardware allocation, data-center location, backup retention, restore procedure, support hours and renewal price. A host that looks cheapest on RAM can be a poor choice if it cannot run your mod list or is far from your players.
Compatibility comes before RAM or price
tModLoader servers are version-sensitive. Every player must use a client compatible with the server’s Terraria and tModLoader versions, and the enabled mods must match the server’s mod files and versions. The tModLoader server documentation requires a 64-bit AMD64 or ARM64 environment, sufficient memory and disk space for the modpack, and compatible client/server versions.

Checklist before ordering
- Identify the exact Terraria edition and tModLoader branch your group will use.
- Export the intended mod list, including dependencies and configuration files.
- Ask whether the host supports Steam Workshop installation, manual uploads, or both.
- Check whether the panel can change tModLoader versions without rebuilding the world.
- Verify disk allowance for the server, worlds, mods, logs and backups—not just advertised RAM.
- Confirm that every player can install the same mod versions through the proposed workflow.
- Ask whether switching between vanilla, tModLoader and TShock changes the server address, files or billing plan.
“Supports tModLoader” is therefore only a starting claim. A plan can support the software while still lacking your required branch, Workshop workflow or storage headroom. Treat a new modpack as a compatibility project: lock versions, test a disposable world, and only then migrate your established save.
How much RAM does a modded Terraria server need?
RAM is a sizing input, not a performance guarantee. A community deployment guide gives indicative operational ranges of about 2 GB for a small, lightly modded world, 4 GB or more for moderate mod lists, and 6–8 GB for Calamity-scale packs with several players. These are guidance ranges, not controlled benchmarks or promises from a host.
| Workload | Indicative RAM | What can change the requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Small, lightly modded world | About 2 GB | Number of mods, world size, background processes and concurrent players. |
| Moderate mod list | 4 GB or more | Content-heavy mods, large worlds, server-side utilities and player activity. |
| Calamity-scale pack with several players | 6–8 GB | Pack version, additional content mods, world generation, player count and process overhead. |
Leave headroom instead of sizing to the minimum. Watch memory use while players explore, generate terrain and trigger mod events; a quiet spawn area can hide peak demand. CPU contention, storage latency and network distance can cause lag even when RAM is not exhausted. More RAM cannot compensate for a distant region, an overloaded host node or a mod that is crashing on a specific event.
Provider comparison
The table uses dated provider-page snapshots. Prices and advertised features can change; verify them at checkout. “Not stated” means the cited material did not establish a comparable figure, not that the provider lacks the feature.

How the managed providers differ
BisectHosting: Its strength is reducing administration. The dated plan snapshot lists three days of free backups, automated updates, 21 advertised locations and 24/7 support. Confirm whether the exact plan and region you want retain those terms.
Shockbyte: The clearest price-led managed choice in the comparison. Its Australia-region example pairs 4 GB with 12 players at A$14.35 per month and advertises automatic backups and updates, DDoS protection, tModLoader/TShock support and a 72-hour self-service refund. Currency and region make it unsafe to compare that figure directly with a United States dollar plan.

Nodecraft: Its appeal is operational convenience. The listing advertises Terraria PC/mobile support, tModLoader and TShock installation, edition switching and slots not limited beyond game limits. The US$4.17 starting price does not tell you the final memory, CPU, renewal cost or location, so request those details for your configuration.
Game Host Bros: Consider it when your modpack is the main selection criterion. The April 2026 snapshot describes integrated mod installation and guides for Calamity and Starlight River. Verify current hardware, pricing, backups and support before committing to a long-running world.
Pingperfect: The directory snapshot gives a useful high-memory example—six Terraria slots on 9 GB for $4.59—with tModLoader/TShock, Workshop mods and a 48-hour trial. It is a snapshot rather than a controlled performance test; confirm what the six-slot package actually includes.
Managed hosting versus a VPS
Choose managed hosting when
- You want a Terraria-oriented panel, one-click or guided mod installation and support that understands the game.
- You prefer provider-managed operating-system updates, network setup and routine server maintenance.
- You need a simple backup interface and do not want to script off-site copies.
- Your group values quick setup more than root-level customization.
Choose a VPS when
- You are comfortable administering Linux or another supported 64-bit operating system.
- You need custom services, scripts, monitoring, firewall rules or filesystem layouts.
- You can handle port forwarding, security updates, tModLoader updates and rollback planning.
- You will test backup restoration rather than assuming a snapshot is usable.
A VPS does not remove hosting work; it transfers that work to you. The tModLoader server configuration follows Terraria’s conventions and supports a configuration file or command-line invocation, including port and maximum-player settings. You must secure the host, open only the required port, run the process safely, and keep the server and mods synchronized with clients. Your bill may be lower or higher than managed hosting depending on the VPS plan, storage, backups and administration time.
Step-by-step: launch a modded server safely
- Freeze the mod list. Record mod names, versions, dependencies and configuration files. Decide whether players will use Steam Workshop or a manually distributed pack.
- Confirm the server build. Select the Terraria and tModLoader versions that match your clients. Do not generate a permanent world until a test client can connect with the complete mod set.
- Choose capacity. Start from the indicative RAM ranges, then add headroom for your player count, world size and heavy content mods. Check CPU allocation and disk space as well as memory.
- Select location. Pick the advertised data center nearest to most players. If a provider lists several regions, ask whether the chosen region is available on your exact plan.
- Install and configure. Use the host’s installer or upload workflow. Set the server port and maximum players in the configuration file or command line, and keep a copy of the configuration outside the server.
- Test privately. Connect with one or two players, generate terrain, enter modded biomes, use storage-heavy systems and watch CPU, RAM, disk and tick behavior.
- Enable recovery. Turn on automatic backups where available, confirm retention, and perform a restore to a separate test world or instance. For a VPS, schedule and verify your own local and off-site copies.
- Document updates. Keep a change log for tModLoader, Terraria, mods and world files. Update during a planned maintenance window and preserve a rollback copy.
What to verify before committing to a host
Location and latency
Provider location lists are not latency benchmarks. Ask where your exact plan runs, then test from the players’ actual networks during busy hours if a trial is available. A nearby region generally reduces round-trip delay, but routing and hardware contention still matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBackups and restoration
“Backups included” does not specify retention, storage isolation, restore time or whether you can download a copy. Confirm how many restore points exist, whether worlds and mod configurations are included, and whether restoring overwrites the live instance. Perform a test restore before building a long-running world.

Renewal and currency
The October 13, 2026 examples are snapshots, not guaranteed renewals. BisectHosting examples were $5.99/month for 2 GB and $11.99/month for 4 GB. Shockbyte’s Australia-region example was A$14.35/month for 4 GB and 12 players. Nodecraft’s cited starting configuration was US$4.17/month. Currency, tax, promotions, region and renewal amounts can change; compare the final checkout total and recurring price. A low introductory price is not a useful saving if the renewal plan lacks the RAM or location your group needs.
File access and exit strategy
Ensure you can download worlds, player files, mod configurations and logs. If a panel hides files, ask whether FTP or SFTP is available. Keep an independent copy so changing hosts does not risk your world. Before cancellation, export the world while the server is stopped or otherwise quiescent, record the mod versions, and verify that the downloaded archive can actually be opened.
Security and permissions
Limit panel and file credentials to the people who need them. On a VPS, apply operating-system updates, use a firewall and expose only the game port and required administration access. Do not treat a provider’s DDoS protection advertisement as a replacement for account security, backups or a tested recovery plan.

Common failure modes and fixes
Clients cannot join after an update
Compare the exact Terraria and tModLoader versions, then compare every mod file and dependency. Roll back the server and clients together if the update changed a mod API or world format. Keep the previous working pack available rather than updating every player piecemeal.
Server starts but crashes when players explore
Check logs for a specific mod, increase memory only after confirming the process is actually exhausting it, and test by disabling one suspect mod at a time on a copy of the world. Large world generation can expose CPU or disk limits that a quiet spawn does not.
Rubber-banding despite unused RAM
Investigate CPU contention, tick rate, storage latency and network path. Move to a nearer region or a plan with clearer CPU allocation before simply buying more memory.

A backup cannot restore the world
Stop writes to the live instance, preserve the current world, and restore to a separate directory or server first. If the provider cannot explain retention or restore behavior, maintain downloadable copies yourself.
Workshop installation creates mismatched files
Compare the server’s installed mod versions with the versions delivered to clients. If the panel’s automated installer and a player’s Workshop subscription resolve different builds, use one documented workflow for everyone and retain the mod configuration files.
Is there one universally best host?
No. The comparison cautions that provider rankings are not controlled tests of latency, contention, support response, restoration or mod performance. BisectHosting is the practical default for many private groups because its documented Terraria support and operational features reduce setup work. Shockbyte can fit a buyer prioritizing a clearly advertised modded tier; Nodecraft emphasizes convenience; Game Host Bros targets heavier modpacks; Pingperfect offers a high-memory example; and a VPS rewards technical ownership. Your mod compatibility and recovery plan should break ties between them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move an existing tModLoader world between hosts?
Usually, if you can export the world, player files, mod list, mod versions and configuration. Make a complete copy, reproduce the same tModLoader and Terraria versions on the destination, and test the migrated world privately before opening it to the group.
Should I pay for more RAM or a stronger CPU first?
Measure the failure. If the process is near its memory limit or being killed, add RAM. If memory remains available while tick time, world generation or server responsiveness degrades, investigate CPU contention, storage and network location instead.

It can reveal installation, client compatibility, panel usability and basic connectivity, but it is too short to prove long-term backup restoration, renewal pricing, peak-hour contention or performance with a mature world. Use the trial to run realistic mod and player tests.
Best Value
Do all players need identical mods?
For a synchronized modded server, clients generally need compatible Terraria and tModLoader versions plus the server’s required mods and versions. Optional client-only mods may differ, but check each mod’s documentation before assuming it is safe.
What is the best tModLoader host for Calamity?
Start with a plan offering at least the indicative 6–8 GB range for a Calamity-scale pack with several players, then compare CPU allocation, storage, installation support, location and backups. Game Host Bros advertises guides for Calamity, while other managed hosts may also run it; verify the exact pack before ordering.
Can I run a tModLoader server on a VPS?
Yes. The environment must be 64-bit AMD64 or ARM64 with enough memory and disk, and clients must match the server’s Terraria, tModLoader and mod versions. You must administer the operating system, firewall, port, updates, backups and restore tests yourself.

There is no universal player number. Shockbyte’s cited example pairs 4 GB with 12 players, but capacity also depends on mods, world activity, CPU, storage and network conditions. Treat that figure as a plan example, not a performance guarantee.
What should I back up besides the world file?
Keep player files, the complete mod list and versions, configuration files, server settings and logs when troubleshooting. Store at least one downloadable copy outside the host and test restoring it to a separate instance.
The Bottom Line
Choose Godlike.Host for Terraria servers with its own game panel, built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day with restore; choose BisectHosting for documented Terraria support and operational features, Shockbyte for a clearly advertised budget modded tier, Nodecraft for convenience, Game Host Bros for specialist modpack guidance, Pingperfect for its cited high-memory example, or a VPS when you want full control. Confirm compatibility, location, CPU, backups and renewal cost before paying.
