The most effective MMO chat setup is layered: hide high-volume public channels, keep party and guild channels visible, turn on the strongest profanity masking available, ignore or blacklist disruptive players without replying, and use the game’s dedicated spam or harassment report path. Menus differ by game and platform, so confirm the current labels in your client.
Use a layered setup instead of one “mute all” switch
Spam and harassment are different problems, so one setting rarely solves both. Channel filters reduce how much unwanted text reaches your screen. Profanity filters mask offensive words that remain visible. Ignore, mute, and blacklist tools limit contact from a particular player. Reporting sends rule-breaking behavior to the publisher for review.

- Filter channels: remove noisy zone, trade, shout, or other global feeds from your normal chat tab.
- Mask language: select the strongest profanity-filter level offered by the game.
- Silence the sender: ignore, mute, or blacklist the character or account.
- Report the conduct: choose the RMT/spam category for advertisements and the harassment category for abuse.
- Preserve context: save screenshots or chat-log details when the support form asks for evidence.
This approach keeps useful communication available while reducing exposure to messages you do not need to read.

Step 1: Hide noisy channels while keeping useful conversations
Open the channel-filter controls
Look for a cog, gear, or chat-tab menu. In The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), the official path is to open the chat window, choose the cog, select Options, and check or uncheck the available channel filters. The same principle applies in other MMOs even when the labels differ.
Create a quiet default tab rather than disabling chat globally. Leave channels that carry information you actively use—usually party, guild, group, or selected direct messages—and turn off high-volume public channels such as zone, trade, shout, or general chat. If the client supports multiple tabs, keep a second “all channels” tab for troubleshooting or public-group activities.
Choose channels by function

Names vary by title. A “trade” channel may be folded into “general,” while a game may offer separate “say,” “shout,” and “tell” streams. Do not assume that hiding a visual channel also blocks mail, party invitations, trades, or voice communication; check the game’s description for the actual scope.
Keep a recovery path
Before disabling a channel, note how to restore it. A quiet tab can hide a legitimate group invitation or a guild announcement if configured too aggressively. If you suspect a support or moderation message is being missed, temporarily enable the relevant channel, capture the context, and then return to the quiet layout.
Step 2: Turn on profanity masking, with realistic expectations
What a profanity filter does
A profanity filter changes profane words into asterisks or other non-letter characters. Bethesda’s ESO documentation describes this masking behavior. Guild Wars 2 documentation lists three levels—None, Normal, and Maximum—so choose Maximum if you want the strongest available text masking.
Masking is a display control, not a contact control. It does not stop another player from sending a message, attempting a tell, inviting you to a group, or trying another channel. A sender who is targeting you still needs to be ignored, muted, or blacklisted.
Select the strongest level you can tolerate
- Maximum or strongest: best for children’s accounts, shared screens, or players who do not need profanity visible.
- Normal or intermediate: a compromise when aggressive masking obscures ordinary words or game terminology.
- None: useful only when you intentionally need unmasked text and already have strong channel and sender controls.
Filters can also vary by communication type. The documentation cited here concerns text chat; verify separately whether your title applies a filter to voice, emotes, mail, or platform messaging. If abusive language is spoken rather than typed, a text filter cannot address it.

Step 3: Ignore, mute, or blacklist the sender immediately
Understand the practical difference
Games use these terms inconsistently. “Ignore” commonly hides messages from a character; “mute” may silence a channel or sender; “blacklist” often blocks a character from selected communications. The exact effects—tells, mail, party invites, trades, friend requests, or only chat text—are title-specific.
Use the fastest available action from the message itself. If the game offers a right-click menu, open it while the message is visible and choose the ignore, mute, or blacklist command. If not, open the Social, Friends, or Contacts menu and enter the character or UserID exactly as displayed.
ESO blocking behavior
ESO allows blocking from the chat window or Social menu and can ignore a UserID’s associated characters. That is useful when the same player switches characters to continue contacting you. Confirm the current client’s wording and whether the action applies across the account, because interfaces and policies can change.
FFXIV’s initial response to RMT
Square Enix Support recommends adding an RMT sender to the blacklist or mute list as an initial way to filter unwanted says, shouts, and tells. This is the immediate containment step; it does not replace the dedicated RMT report.
Blizzard’s harassment guidance
Blizzard’s guidance for ongoing in-game harassment is direct: place the character or characters on ignore, do not respond, and submit a ticket when harassment continues. Do not keep arguing in public chat. A reply can prolong the interaction and make the relevant evidence harder to identify.
Step 4: Report the correct category
Use the RMT or spam route for advertisements
Real-money-trading advertisements should go through the game’s dedicated RMT or spam workflow when one exists. In Final Fantasy XIV, right-click the character in the chat log and choose Report > Report RMT Activity. The Lodestone specifically identifies a menu option for RMT advertisements sent through Say, Shout, and Tell messages.
Use this category for messages selling currency, accounts, boosting, or other prohibited services when the game identifies them as RMT. Do not select harassment merely because an advertisement is annoying; accurate categorization helps the moderation team route the case.

Use harassment or support for abuse
For threats, insults aimed at you, targeted sexual or discriminatory abuse, stalking behavior, or repeated contact after an ignore action, use the harassment or support route. In FFXIV, the documented path is System > Support Desk > Contact Us > Report Harassment.

Select the closest accurate category and follow the form’s instructions rather than filing multiple unrelated reports for the same incident.
Report conduct that violates the rules
A message can be irritating without violating a game rule. ArenaNet’s Guild Wars Rules of Conduct prohibit spamming, flooding, and duplicate posts in global chat, and also prohibit malicious reports. Report repeated or rule-breaking conduct, not simply every message you dislike. False or retaliatory reports can create a separate policy problem.
Step 5: Preserve evidence and escalate bypasses
Capture the minimum useful context
When a support form asks for evidence, save a screenshot showing the character name, message, channel, and approximate time. If the client provides a chat-log export or message history, retain the relevant lines without editing out the surrounding context. Keep your own notes about what happened in chronological order.
- Record the displayed character name or UserID exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Note whether the message appeared in Say, Shout, Tell, zone, trade, group, or another channel.
- Describe what happened after you ignored or blacklisted the sender.
- Attach only the files and details the official form requests.
Escalate attempts to bypass communication limits
Blizzard describes ongoing harassment as including attempts to circumvent ignore or communication limits. If a player changes characters, uses alternate accounts, or repeatedly finds another channel after being blocked, stop engaging and submit the case through the official support route. Include the relationship between the incidents so the reviewer can see the pattern.

These paths are documented examples, not a guarantee that every platform edition has identical labels. Console and PC interfaces can differ, and patches can move commands. If a menu is missing, search the in-game help for “chat,” “ignore,” “blacklist,” “RMT,” or “harassment” rather than assuming the feature was removed.

Choose settings using five checks
1. Channel granularity
Can you hide trade, zone, and shout independently, or only disable chat broadly? More granular controls let you keep local or group information while removing the largest sources of noise.
2. Contact control
Does ignore or blacklist stop tells, mail, party invitations, trades, and friend requests, or only hide text? If the game blocks text but still permits invitations, use the separate social or privacy controls.
3. Filter strength
Is profanity masking configurable? Does it affect text only, or also voice and other message systems? Treat the filter as a visibility aid, not proof that contact has been prevented.
4. Escalation path
Are RMT advertisements and harassment separate report categories? Choose the dedicated route when available; it gives the publisher the most specific context.
5. Persistence and scope
Does a setting apply to the current character, the whole account, a platform profile, or only the active channel? Test with a harmless setting change and inspect the Social or privacy menu before relying on it across characters.
Troubleshooting common situations
“I still see spam after hiding the trade channel.”
The message may be arriving through zone, shout, say, tells, or a custom tab that still includes the source channel. Inspect every enabled filter, then mute or blacklist the sender. If the message is an RMT advertisement, file the dedicated report as well.
“The profanity filter is on, but the player can still contact me.”
That is expected behavior for a masking filter. It changes what is displayed; it does not prevent delivery. Use ignore, mute, or blacklist and verify which communication types the game blocks.
“I blocked one character, but the same person returned.”
Check whether the game supports account or UserID-level blocking. ESO documents UserID association with characters. If the player is bypassing an ignore or communication limit, collect the related messages and escalate through harassment support.
“Should I reply to tell the sender to stop?”
No. The documented Blizzard approach is to ignore the character, do not respond, and submit a ticket if harassment continues. For RMT, blacklist or mute first and use the RMT report path. Replying creates more contact and rarely improves the moderation record.
“I cannot find the report command.”
Open the message’s context menu, the Support Desk, or the game’s help search. Look specifically for RMT, spam, harassment, or contact-support terms. Record the character and message while visible so you can complete the form even if the chat scrolls away.
A practical quiet-chat profile
- Make a default tab that shows party, group, guild, and the direct-message channels you actually use.
- Remove zone, trade, shout, and other high-volume public channels from that tab.
- Enable the strongest profanity-filter level offered by the client.
- When an unwanted message appears, use the message menu to ignore, mute, or blacklist the sender before doing anything else.
- For an RMT advertisement, submit the dedicated RMT or spam report; for abuse, use harassment or support.
- Save the requested screenshot or chat-log details, especially if the sender bypasses an ignore action.
- Recheck the settings after major patches, when changing characters, or when moving between PC and console editions.
This profile is deliberately reversible: you can restore a public channel for a marketplace event or group activity without exposing yourself to it all day.
What these settings cannot guarantee
No filter catches every variation of an advertisement, and no single ignore action necessarily covers every account, character, platform message, or social feature. Profanity masking can hide words without changing the sender’s behavior. Reports are requests for publisher review, not an instant ban or a promise of a particular outcome.
The reliable boundary is behavioral: reduce exposure, cut off direct contact, avoid responding, and provide accurate context through the game’s official process. Keep your settings aligned with the channels and communities you genuinely need, and escalate repeated attempts to bypass those controls.
