For the largest local language models in a genuinely small computer, start with AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini-PC tier: systems can be configured with up to 128GB of LPDDR5x unified memory, and AMD says the platform can handle models up to 200 billion parameters. If you need still larger 4-bit models, the newer Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495 platform raises unified memory to 192GB and AMD’s stated ceiling to more than 300 billion parameters. Choose an NVIDIA RTX 50-series mini PC instead when CUDA, NIM microservices or discrete-GPU throughput is more important than fitting a model whose weights exceed available VRAM.
The right choice is determined first by model fit, then by sustained speed, software support, cooling and total system cost. A compact chassis does not make a model run locally if its weights, KV cache and runtime overhead cannot fit in usable memory.

Quick picks
| Platform | Memory or VRAM | AI hardware and stated capability | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PCs | Up to 128GB LPDDR5x unified memory | Up to 50 TOPS NPU; AMD states support for models up to 200B parameters at the platform level | Large quantized LLMs that need more memory than a typical discrete GPU provides | Unified memory is normally fixed and cannot be upgraded after purchase |
| AMD Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495 Developer Platform | Up to 192GB unified memory; up to 160GB can be allocated as graphics memory | AMD states support for 300B-plus language models at 4-bit quantization | Very large local models and development workloads | Developer-platform pricing and availability are limited; the cited US preorder was $3,999 |
| NVIDIA RTX 50-series mini PCs | Up to 32GB dedicated VRAM, depending on the GPU | FP4 support; CUDA ecosystem and NIM microservices | Models that fit in VRAM, image generation, vision and CUDA-first applications | A model that needs more than the installed VRAM must spill into slower system memory or be reduced |
These are platform-level choices rather than a single universal winner. Check the exact mini PC’s memory capacity, SSD, power limit, cooling design and operating-system image before ordering; two machines using the same processor or GPU can behave differently under sustained inference.

Inference needs room for more than the model’s advertised parameter count. Quantized weights occupy the largest block, while the KV cache grows with context length and the runtime needs additional buffers. A model can therefore fail to load even when a simple weight-size calculation appears to fit.

Use quantization to estimate the floor
At 4-bit quantization, each parameter represents about half a byte before scales, metadata and runtime overhead. As a rough planning exercise, 70B parameters correspond to about 35GB of raw weights, 120B to about 60GB and 200B to about 100GB. Those are not guaranteed memory requirements: the actual footprint rises with quantization format, context length, batch size, KV-cache precision and the inference engine.
This is why a 128GB unified-memory configuration is materially different from a 32GB graphics card. It leaves room for a large model plus operating-system and runtime allocations, although the CPU, GPU and NPU share that pool. You should reserve headroom instead of treating the headline capacity as entirely available to the model.
What model sizes are realistic
- 7B–14B models: Usually comfortable on systems with modest memory, even at higher precision, provided the runner and context settings fit.
- 30B–40B models: A 4-bit build generally benefits from more than 24GB of usable accelerator memory once cache and overhead are included.
- 70B models: A 4-bit build has roughly 35GB of raw weights, so 32GB VRAM is a tight boundary; unified-memory systems offer more practical headroom.
- 120B models: Approximately 60GB of raw 4-bit weights makes 64GB-class usable memory a starting point, not a guarantee for long contexts.
- 200B and larger models: These require a high-capacity unified-memory platform or a multi-device setup. AMD’s 200B and 300B-plus statements are vendor claims for specific platform configurations and 4-bit use, not a promise that every model, context or runtime will load identically.
When a listing says “128GB,” verify that it is system unified memory rather than a smaller RAM module paired with a separate 128GB SSD. Memory soldered to the board cannot be replaced later, so buying the capacity you need on day one matters more than choosing a slightly faster processor.
AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395: the practical large-model tier
Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PCs are the clearest choice when your priority is fitting a large quantized LLM in a compact enclosure. AMD specifies up to 128GB of LPDDR5x unified memory and an NPU rated at up to 50 TOPS. The platform-level guidance says it can support models up to 200B parameters.
Why unified memory helps
CPU and integrated graphics draw from the same high-capacity pool, so a model does not have to fit inside a small, separately installed VRAM block. That makes 70B, 120B and some 200B 4-bit experiments more plausible than on a 16GB or 32GB discrete card. The trade-off is that memory bandwidth and allocation behavior depend on the exact system configuration, and the graphics share memory with the operating system and applications.
What to verify in a listing
- Confirm the full 128GB configuration, not a lower-memory SKU with a similar processor name.
- Check whether the seller includes Windows 11, Linux or no operating system, and whether your chosen runner supports the installed drivers.
- Look for a cooling design intended for sustained load. Short benchmark bursts do not reveal whether clocks or fan noise change after several minutes of generation.
- Confirm SSD capacity separately. Model files can consume tens or hundreds of gigabytes even when they fit in memory.
The most defensible search wording is “AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 128GB mini PC.” Treat marketplace listings as variable: seller, price, included SSD, warranty and regional inventory must be checked at the time of purchase.

AMD Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495: maximum capacity in a mini-PC platform
Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495 is aimed at users who have outgrown the 128GB class. AMD specifies up to 192GB of unified memory, with up to 160GB allocatable as graphics memory, and says the platform can support 300-billion-parameter and larger language models at 4-bit quantization.
Who should consider it
This tier is for local development with very large models, long contexts or several concurrent services where 128GB leaves too little headroom. The extra capacity can also reduce the need to split a model across devices, simplifying deployment and avoiding transfers over a slower interconnect.
Price and availability context
Tom’s Hardware reported a US preorder price of $3,999 for the Ryzen AI Halo Developer Platform on June 13, 2026. The report identified Linux and Windows 11 variants. A preorder price is a point-in-time figure, not a recurring retail price; confirm final availability, configuration, shipping and support before treating it as a buying quote.
AMD calls Ryzen AI Halo “The one-stop solution for local AI development and inference.” That is a vendor positioning statement. Independent, cross-platform throughput results and long-run thermal data are not established here, so capacity should be the reason to buy rather than an assumed speed ranking.
NVIDIA RTX 50-series mini PCs: choose CUDA and discrete-GPU throughput
NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series adds FP4 support and offers up to 32GB of VRAM, depending on the GPU model. NVIDIA also lists local-AI integrations including NIM microservices, LM Studio, AnythingLLM, ComfyUI and LangChain. Its stated use cases span LLMs, vision-language models, image generation, speech, embeddings for retrieval-augmented generation, PDF extraction and computer vision.
When RTX is the better fit
- Your model fits within the installed VRAM with cache and runtime headroom.
- You depend on CUDA-specific kernels, NIM containers or software that has been validated primarily on NVIDIA hardware.
- You want one compact system for LLMs plus image, video or vision workloads that already target CUDA.
- You value discrete-GPU throughput and mature tooling more than the ability to load the largest possible parameter count.
The VRAM boundary
Up to 32GB of VRAM can be excellent for small and medium models, but it is a hard capacity limit for a single-card workflow. A 70B 4-bit model’s roughly 35GB of raw weights already exceeds 32GB before cache and overhead. Some runtimes can place part of a model in system memory, but generation speed and latency then depend on transfers and should be measured rather than assumed.

Check the exact RTX model, VRAM amount, power limit and cooling system. “RTX 50-series” covers multiple GPUs; the family name alone does not tell you whether a particular mini PC has enough memory for your model.
Software compatibility: CUDA, NIM, ROCm and Vulkan
Hardware capacity is only useful if your model runner can address it. NVIDIA systems have the most direct path when your workflow requires CUDA or NIM microservices. AMD systems may rely on ROCm, Vulkan or a runner’s own backend, and support can vary by operating-system version, driver and model architecture.
Check a workload matrix before buying
- Write down the exact runner you plan to use, such as a desktop application, a command-line server or a containerized service.
- Check its current backend documentation for your operating system and the specific GPU or integrated-graphics architecture.
- Confirm support for your quantization format, context length and tensor-parallel or offload settings.
- Test a representative model on the intended platform before standardizing on a larger model. A successful download does not prove that all layers will load into the accelerator.
Windows 11 can be convenient for desktop tools, while Linux is often preferable for containerized development and scripted deployments. The Halo Developer Platform was reported with both Linux and Windows 11 variants; other mini PCs may ship with a different image or no operating system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpeed: measure sustained tokens per second, not peak specifications
Two systems can fit the same model yet feel very different. Compare sustained generation speed and time to first token using the same model file, quantization, prompt, context length, batch size and runtime. Record performance after the system has been generating long enough for its cooling solution to reach steady state.
AMD’s tokens-per-dollar claim
AMD reported 1.7 times more tokens per dollar than an NVIDIA DGX Spark in an LM Studio comparison using AMD’s 2025 testing and December 2025 market prices. That is directional vendor evidence, not a universal ranking: the result depends on the selected model, software settings, hardware configuration and the prices used at that time. Reproduce the test with your own workload before making a purchase decision.
What to record in your own test
- Time to first token, which reflects model loading, prompt processing and memory movement.
- Decode tokens per second at a fixed context length.
- Prompt-processing speed for document or RAG workloads.
- Power draw and fan behavior during a long generation.
- Whether the model remains fully in accelerator or unified memory, rather than silently offloading layers to slower system RAM.
Thermals, acoustics and form factor
Mini PCs have less heatsink and fan area than desktop towers. Sustained inference can expose limits that a short benchmark misses: clocks may drop, fans may become loud, or the enclosure may become uncomfortable to touch. Ask for the chassis dimensions, power adapter rating, fan profile and any independent long-duration testing.

Upgradeability, storage and total cost
Unified memory in these AMD platforms is generally fixed. You cannot buy a lower-memory configuration and add capacity later, so size for the largest model and context you expect to run. RTX mini PCs may offer replaceable storage or system RAM, but VRAM remains fixed to the installed GPU.
Budget for storage separately from memory. Quantized model files, multiple revisions, embeddings and container images can quickly fill a small SSD. Verify whether the quoted price includes the operating system, memory capacity, SSD size, power supply and warranty. A lower sticker price with 32GB instead of 128GB may be a false saving if it forces you to replace the entire system for your target model.

Common failure modes and fixes
The model refuses to load
The usual cause is insufficient usable memory after cache and runtime allocations. Reduce context length or quantization only if quality remains acceptable; otherwise move to a higher-capacity configuration.
Generation is unexpectedly slow
Check whether layers have spilled into system memory, whether the selected backend is using the accelerator, and whether thermal throttling began after warm-up. Re-test with a fixed prompt and context so you can separate software configuration from hardware limits.

The mini PC becomes noisy during long jobs
Improve airflow, use a balanced power profile and check for firmware or fan-control updates. If noise remains unacceptable, a larger chassis may be a better fit even when the mini PC has enough theoretical memory.
Which mini PC should you buy?
Buy a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system with 128GB unified memory when your priority is running the largest practical local models in a compact, general-purpose machine and you do not require CUDA-first software. Choose the Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495 Developer Platform when 192GB unified memory and AMD’s stated 300B-plus 4-bit capability justify its substantially higher platform price and limited availability. Choose an RTX 50-series mini PC when your models fit within up to 32GB of VRAM and your work depends on CUDA, NIM or established NVIDIA applications for language, vision and image generation.
No platform-level claim replaces a workload test. The decisive specification is usable memory for your exact model and context; after that, validate runtime support, sustained throughput, thermals and the complete system price.

Can a 32GB RTX 50-series mini PC run a 70B model?
A 70B model at 4-bit quantization has roughly 35GB of raw weights before cache and runtime overhead, so it will not fit entirely in 32GB VRAM. A runtime may offload layers to system memory, but the resulting speed depends on transfers and must be measured.
How much unified memory is sensible for a 120B local model?
A 120B model at 4-bit quantization is roughly 60GB of raw weights. Treat 64GB as a starting point rather than a guarantee; longer contexts, KV cache and runtime buffers require additional headroom. A 128GB configuration is more flexible.
Is the $3,999 Halo price a normal retail price?
No. The $3,999 figure was a US preorder price reported on June 13, 2026 for the Ryzen AI Halo Developer Platform. Final retail pricing, availability and configuration can differ.
Should I choose Windows 11 or Linux for a local AI mini PC?
Use the operating system best supported by your chosen runner and deployment method. Windows 11 can simplify desktop applications; Linux is often preferable for containerized or scripted workflows. Verify backend and driver support for the exact hardware before buying.
