Best Military Shooters to Play If You Like Modern Warfare 4’s Korean Peninsula Setting

If Modern Warfare 4’s appeal is a fictional present-day invasion of the Korean Peninsula, start with Battlefield 2042 for large-scale modern warfare, Arma Reforger for the deepest simulation and modding, or Insurgency: Sandstorm for tense infantry combat and co-op. Choose Hell Let Loose if coordinated combined-arms teamwork matters more to you than a contemporary setting; it recreates World War II rather than Korea.

What Modern Warfare 4’s setting actually is

The phrase “Korean War setting” can be misleading. Official Modern Warfare 4 material describes a fictional contemporary invasion of the Korean Peninsula, not a recreation of the historical 1950–53 Korean War. Activision’s official description says, “War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the world.” The campaign follows Private Park, a young South Korean soldier, through a conflict that moves between close-quarters fighting, open battlefield engagements, squad operations and covert missions.

That distinction changes what counts as a good alternative. None of the games below reproduces Modern Warfare 4’s Korean characters, campaign or political premise. Their value is in preserving a particular part of the experience: a current-feeling war, huge combined-arms battles, communication-heavy tactics, lethal infantry engagements or organized teamwork. The right choice depends on which of those elements you want to keep.

Quick comparison

Game Setting Combat scale Modes and structure identified by official material Best match for
Battlefield 2042 Near-future all-out warfare Large battles combining vehicles, squads and close-quarters fights Competitive multiplayer built around squad play and classic Battlefield maps Modern spectacle, vehicles and broad frontline battles
Arma Reforger Military sandbox platform Open-ended scenarios whose scale depends on the server, mission and community content Versatile platform with Workbench tools for community-made mods Simulation depth, planning and player-created scenarios
Insurgency: Sandstorm Contemporary-style insurgency combat Tight infantry engagements Four PvP modes and three PvE modes; presented by Focus Entertainment as a tactical co-op shooter Infantry tension, co-op and shorter tactical fights
Hell Let Loose World War II 50-versus-50 combined-arms battles with infantry, tanks and artillery Frontline battles in which territory shifts as teams attack and defend Historical atmosphere, coordination and battlefield scale

The table is a fit guide, not a claim that these games share Modern Warfare 4’s story. Hell Let Loose is explicitly historical, Arma Reforger is a moddable military platform rather than a scripted campaign equivalent, and the other two preserve different slices of modern-shooter design.

Battlefield 2042: the closest match for modern, large-scale warfare

Why it fits

Battlefield 2042 is the most natural pick when the part you want to preserve is the feeling of a contemporary conflict expanding across a wide combat zone. EA presents it as all-out warfare with close-quarters combat, squad play and classic Battlefield maps. That combination gives you the contrast Modern Warfare 4’s campaign promises: a fight can move from a confined urban encounter to a much broader engagement where vehicles, positioning and squad movement matter.

It is also the clearest recommendation for players who want spectacle without committing to a military simulator. You can approach it as a conventional multiplayer shooter, but the battlefield is designed around more than isolated gunfights. Squads, vehicles and map-scale movement are central to the experience described by EA, so it suits players who enjoy seeing a local objective connect to a larger battle.

What you are trading away

Battlefield 2042 does not recreate a Korean Peninsula invasion, follow Private Park or provide Modern Warfare 4’s campaign premise. Its setting is near-future rather than a fictional contemporary Korean conflict, and its appeal is primarily the scale and structure of multiplayer warfare. If your priority is a directed story with character-driven missions, this is a thematic substitute rather than a direct campaign replacement.

Choose it if

  • You want modern or near-future military imagery rather than a historical setting.
  • You enjoy vehicles and broad combined-arms battles as much as infantry combat.
  • You prefer accessible large-scale multiplayer to a communications-heavy simulator.
  • You want squad play to matter without building a custom scenario or learning a full sandbox toolset.

Arma Reforger: the best choice for simulation depth and an open military sandbox

Why it fits

Arma Reforger is the strongest recommendation if the appeal of Modern Warfare 4 is the idea of operating inside a wider military campaign rather than simply moving from one cinematic set piece to the next. Bohemia Interactive describes it as a versatile platform and highlights Workbench tools designed for community mods. That makes it fundamentally different from a fixed, authored campaign: missions, rules and scenarios can be shaped by the server and the community content available to you.

The open-ended structure is useful for players who want to plan an operation, coordinate with other players and accept that the battle may not unfold in a neatly scripted sequence. It can support the kind of reconnaissance, movement and communication that a fictional invasion setting suggests, but it does so through a sandbox rather than through Modern Warfare 4’s linear presentation.

Why it demands more from you

Simulation depth changes the pace. Arma Reforger is a poor fit if you want instant action, constant cinematic direction or a guaranteed sequence of campaign missions. The experience depends heavily on the scenario, server and community content. You may spend more time organizing, moving and communicating than you would in an arcade-oriented military shooter.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II - PlayStation 5
  • Call of Duty: Modern Wafare II PS5
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the sequel to 2019’s blockbuster Modern Warfare.
  • Featuring the return of the iconic, team leader Captain John Price, the fearless John "Soap" MacTavish, the seasoned Sergeant Kyle "Gaz” Garrick, and the lone wolf himself, fan favorite Simon “Ghost” Riley, players will witness what makes Task Force 141 the legendary squad it is today.
  • Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription

Workbench is also a meaningful part of the game’s identity. It gives communities tools to create and modify content, so the platform can evolve beyond its initial scenarios. The benefit is variety and experimentation; the cost is that quality, availability and ease of access can vary with the content you choose.

Choose it if

  • You value planning, communication and uncertainty over scripted spectacle.
  • You want an open-ended military platform rather than a conventional story campaign.
  • You are willing to learn the rules of a particular server or scenario.
  • Community-made missions and modding are part of the reason you are buying the game.

Insurgency: Sandstorm: the best fit for tight infantry fights and co-op

Why it fits

Insurgency: Sandstorm narrows the focus to the part of Modern Warfare 4 that many players remember most vividly: moving through dangerous spaces where every doorway, street and objective can become a close-range fight. Focus Entertainment lists four player-versus-player modes and three player-versus-environment modes, and calls it “The definitive tactical coop shooter.” Those seven mode categories make it the most straightforward option here for players who want both competitive matches and cooperative missions without moving into a full military sandbox.

Its strongest connection to Modern Warfare 4 is infantry pressure. The game is a better fit than a vehicle-heavy title if you want to clear positions, hold an objective and rely on teammates while the engagement stays concentrated around buildings and streets. The contemporary-style insurgency framing also feels closer to a modern conflict than Hell Let Loose’s World War II setting.

Where it differs

Insurgency: Sandstorm does not offer Modern Warfare 4’s Korean Peninsula story or its character-led campaign. Its structure is mode-based, with PvP and PvE options rather than a single authored invasion narrative. It also does not aim for Arma Reforger’s broad, community-built military simulation. The trade-off is clarity: you can select the kind of session you want instead of relying on a long-form sandbox to create it.

Choose it if

  • You want infantry combat to be the main event.
  • You are looking for co-op as well as competitive play.
  • You prefer focused objectives and shorter tactical spaces to huge vehicle battles.
  • You want a contemporary military tone without the overhead of a full simulation platform.

Hell Let Loose: the best historical alternative for coordinated combined arms

Why it fits

Hell Let Loose is the outlier in this list, but it belongs here because it preserves two qualities that attract players to Modern Warfare 4’s invasion premise: teamwork and a battlefield that feels larger than any one soldier. Its official page describes a World War II first-person shooter with 50-versus-50 battles, infantry, tanks, artillery and a shifting frontline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That scale makes coordination more than a useful extra. Infantry must operate within a wider battle that includes armored vehicles and artillery, while the frontline changes as teams attack and defend. If your favorite Modern Warfare 4 moments are the ones in which a squad’s movement contributes to a larger operation, Hell Let Loose can deliver that feeling even though its weapons, uniforms and historical context are entirely different.

Why the setting is not interchangeable

This is a World War II game, not a modern or near-future Korean Peninsula shooter. You should choose it for historical atmosphere and combined-arms teamwork, not because you expect contemporary equipment or a fictional second Korean conflict. The distinction matters if your interest is specifically North Korea, South Korea or a present-day geopolitical premise.

Choose it if

  • You want very large team battles with a clearly historical identity.
  • Infantry, tanks and artillery should operate together.
  • You enjoy a frontline that shifts as objectives are won and lost.
  • You are willing to trade modern setting details for organized battlefield cooperation.

Which game matches the part of Modern Warfare 4 you liked?

If the Korean Peninsula premise is the priority

None of these games reproduces it. Modern Warfare 4’s official material is specific: a fictional contemporary invasion, a South Korean protagonist and a conflict that expands into covert operations. The alternatives borrow individual design qualities rather than the setting. Treat any recommendation that promises an identical Korean campaign with caution; the evidence supports thematic matches, not a one-to-one replacement.

If you want modern scale and vehicles

Pick Battlefield 2042. EA’s description directly emphasizes all-out warfare, squad play, close-quarters combat and classic Battlefield maps. It is the clearest bridge from a contemporary invasion story to broad multiplayer battles with vehicles and multiple layers of combat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If realism and planning matter most

Pick Arma Reforger. Its platform approach and Workbench tools make it the most flexible option for players who want open-ended military scenarios and community-created content. Expect a slower, more dependent-on-your-group experience than a scripted action campaign.

If you mainly want infantry co-op

Pick Insurgency: Sandstorm. Its four PvP and three PvE modes give you both competitive and cooperative routes, while its tactical-co-op positioning keeps the focus on infantry engagements rather than a giant combined-arms sandbox.

If teamwork and scale matter more than era

Pick Hell Let Loose. Its 50-versus-50 World War II battles, tanks, artillery and shifting frontline make it the strongest choice for coordinated combined arms, provided you are comfortable leaving the modern setting behind.

Your priority Best starting point Reason
Contemporary-feeling battlefield spectacle Battlefield 2042 It combines all-out warfare, squads, close-quarters combat and classic large Battlefield maps.

A player who wants a broad battle can begin with Battlefield 2042 or Hell Let Loose. A player who wants the community and the server to shape the mission should begin with Arma Reforger.

Solo, co-op and competitive expectations

When you want a directed campaign

Modern Warfare 4’s campaign description is unusually specific about perspective and mission variety: Private Park, close-quarters combat, open battlefield engagements, squad play and covert operations. The four alternatives are not presented in the supplied official material as replacements for that exact authored campaign. Battlefield 2042 is framed around all-out warfare and multiplayer structure; Arma Reforger around a moddable platform; Insurgency: Sandstorm around PvP and PvE modes; and Hell Let Loose around large historical battles.

That means you should buy one of them for the multiplayer or sandbox experience you want, not on the assumption that it contains a comparable Korean story.

When you want co-op

Insurgency: Sandstorm is the most explicit fit because its official description identifies three PvE modes and calls the game a tactical co-op shooter. Arma Reforger can support cooperative scenarios through its platform and community content, but the exact experience depends on the server or mission. Hell Let Loose and Battlefield 2042 are stronger choices when your priority is large team warfare rather than a specifically advertised co-op campaign structure.

When you want competitive scale

Battlefield 2042 and Hell Let Loose are the clearest choices in the supplied descriptions. Battlefield emphasizes all-out warfare and squad play, while Hell Let Loose specifies 50-versus-50 battles and a changing frontline. Insurgency: Sandstorm offers four PvP modes, but its identity is tighter infantry combat rather than a 50-versus-50 combined-arms front. Arma Reforger’s competitive shape depends on the scenario and community server.

Platforms, release timing and purchase checks

Xbox’s official listing gives Modern Warfare 4 an October 23, 2026 release date and lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The same listing says it is not available on Game Pass at launch. Storefront listings, editions and regional availability can change, so verify the current listing for your country before buying.

The supplied official material does not establish a single current price, edition lineup or complete platform list for Battlefield 2042, Arma Reforger, Insurgency: Sandstorm or Hell Let Loose. Check the store page for your platform rather than assuming that an edition, mod feature or multiplayer population is identical across systems. This is especially important for Arma Reforger, where the available community content and server experience are part of the game’s value.

A practical way to start

  1. Identify the feature you are trying to preserve. Write down whether it is the Korean Peninsula premise, modern equipment, close infantry fights, vehicles, a campaign, co-op or squad coordination. Only the latter features are represented by the alternatives here; the exact Korean story is not.
  2. Choose the matching structure. Select Battlefield 2042 for broad all-out warfare, Arma Reforger for a sandbox, Insurgency: Sandstorm for focused PvP/PvE infantry modes, or Hell Let Loose for historical 50-versus-50 combined arms.
  3. Confirm the current platform listing. Check the edition, supported system, online requirements and regional storefront before purchase. Do not transfer Modern Warfare 4’s platform assumptions to another game.
  4. Set a communication expectation. Squad-focused and simulation-oriented games become more demanding when players must coordinate. If you prefer immediate, self-contained action, start with the more structured option; if you enjoy planning, accept a steeper learning curve.
  5. Judge the game by its stated identity. Do not reject Hell Let Loose because it is not modern, or expect Arma Reforger to behave like a linear campaign. Each recommendation is strongest when used for the experience its official description actually promises.

Bottom line: the shortest recommendation

Choose Battlefield 2042 for the nearest overall substitute in modern, squad-based battlefield scale. Choose Arma Reforger when simulation and modding are more important than a scripted story. Choose Insurgency: Sandstorm for focused infantry combat with both PvP and PvE options. Choose Hell Let Loose for the most explicit large-team combined-arms structure, accepting its World War II setting. None is a Korean Peninsula campaign replacement, but each preserves a different reason to be interested in Modern Warfare 4’s fictional invasion premise.
