Quick answer: which game should you buy?
These three games offer military FPS combat in which positioning, communication and decision-making matter more than purchasing a stronger loadout. They are not interchangeable, however. Their scale, historical setting, lethality and reliance on voice teamwork produce very different experiences.

What “without pay-to-win” means here
A shooter is pay-to-win when spending money can directly improve combat power: for example, buying a weapon with higher damage, armor that absorbs more shots, a stat increase, or an exclusive advantage unavailable through normal play. Cosmetic items, alternate animations, visual textures and edition bonuses do not automatically create that advantage.

The pages checked for this comparison show a narrower result: no documented pay-to-win sales in the checked pages for Squad and Insurgency: Sandstorm. That is a statement about the listed content, not a permanent guarantee about every future update, marketplace or platform. Live monetization can change, so inspect the current in-game and platform store before purchase. Hell Let Loose’s official franchise page describes the games and settings but does not document enough of its current paid-content model to support a stronger claim.
Squad: best for large-scale combined-arms teamwork
What the game is built around
Squad is the clearest fit if you want a military FPS where the battle is won by a coordinated unit rather than by an individual kill streak. Its official Steam description calls it a tactical FPS focused on authentic combat through teamwork, communication and realistic combat. The same page describes 100-player battles, including 50-versus-50 matches, with infantry fighting alongside vehicles and logistics. Suppression, supply work and movement between objectives are as important to a successful attack as marksmanship.
The current description lists 13 factions and 24 maps, giving matches a broader operational feel than a compact arena shooter. A team may need to establish a position, keep supplies moving, defend a route and coordinate armor or other vehicles while squads contest objectives. The result is a slower information problem: you are constantly deciding what your unit knows, what it can reach and whether an assault can be supported.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Communication is a core mechanic
Squad offers extensive in-game voice communication, including local, squad, leader and commander channels. The publisher recommends a microphone for the full communication experience. You can technically play without speaking, but the design assumes that players can pass contact reports, request support, identify a flank and follow a squad leader’s plan. A basic gaming headset with a microphone is therefore a practical accessory, not merely a comfort upgrade.
- Join a squad whose role and language you understand.
- Use the appropriate voice channel: local chat for nearby players, squad chat for your unit and leader or commander channels for higher-level coordination.
- Give short, location-based reports: direction, distance, landmark and whether the threat is moving.
- Follow the current objective until your squad leader changes it; isolated movement often wastes the team’s logistics and spawn network.
- When you die, report what you saw before redeploying so the next push is informed.
How lethal and demanding it feels
Squad rewards patience. Suppression can make return fire inaccurate, vehicles can change the approach to an objective, and logistics determine whether a team can sustain pressure. New players should expect a learning curve built around map reading, radio discipline and recognizing when not to shoot. The game is a good match for someone who enjoys a role in a larger plan, even when that role is supplying, defending or relaying information rather than collecting the most kills.

What you are paying for
The listed add-ons on the checked Steam page are emotes, weapon-skin packs and faction or supporter-style editions. The page does not document paid stat boosts, stronger weapons or combat attributes sold for money. Treat that as the current documented position, then recheck the live store because optional content and bundles can change.
Choose Squad if…
- You want 50-versus-50 operations rather than small-team rounds.
- Vehicles, logistics, suppression and command structure sound interesting rather than distracting.
- You are willing to use a microphone and learn communication etiquette.
- You prefer a tactical pace in which positioning and information can matter more than reflex speed.
Insurgency: Sandstorm: best for modern close-quarters infantry combat
The central combat model
Insurgency: Sandstorm is the better option when you want modern infantry combat compressed into direct, dangerous engagements. Its Steam description presents it as a hardcore tactical FPS built on lethal close-quarters combat and ruthless intensity. Death is described as instant, ammunition is precious, and victory depends on skill and coordination. Those priorities make every doorway, alley and reload a meaningful decision.
Recommended Free Tools
Player-versus-player modes support up to 14v14, and the game also includes co-op. That is a substantially smaller battlefield than Squad’s 50-versus-50 format, so individual movement and immediate team reactions carry more weight. You have fewer layers of command between your decision and the outcome of a fight, while still needing to clear spaces, conserve ammunition and cover teammates.
Why the learning curve is different from Squad
Both games are lethal, but the problem you solve is different. Squad asks you to understand a large operation: where the team is building momentum, how supplies reach the objective and how radio channels connect units. Sandstorm asks you to survive the next angle, breach a position and coordinate a small group through a sequence of close fights. You learn sight lines, sound cues, cover and timing before you learn a broad logistics network.
Because ammunition is precious, firing at every uncertain silhouette is a liability. Pause before a reload, communicate a cleared room and avoid exposing yourself to multiple angles at once. A player who knows when to hold an angle can contribute more than one who simply moves quickly.

Modes and team play
The documented offering combines PvP up to 14v14 with co-op. PvP suits players who want to test positioning and coordination against another human team. Co-op gives a more controlled way to learn the weapon handling, map routes and communication habits before committing to the pressure of a competitive round. In either mode, the game’s emphasis on lethal engagements means that reckless solo pushes are expensive.
Paid content and fairness
The checked Steam page lists gear sets, weapon skins, texture packs and edition bundles. It does not document paid stat increases, higher-damage weapons or other direct combat-power purchases. Those listed items are visual or edition-based rather than an advertised way to outperform another player. Confirm the current store listing before buying because a live-service store can be revised.
Choose Insurgency: Sandstorm if…
- You want modern weapons and close-range fights instead of a sprawling front.
- You prefer matches where a 14-player side can feel every mistake immediately.
- You want both PvP and co-op options.
- You enjoy a lethal game in which ammunition management and room-by-room coordination matter.
Hell Let Loose: best for historical WWII fronts
Historical focus and battlefield scale
Hell Let Loose is the choice for players who want a historical setting rather than a modern one. Its official site describes a hardcore FPS franchise with battles inspired by real historical wars, and says the original game covers iconic WWII battles. The franchise page also lists Hell Let Loose: Vietnam as a wishlist title, but that listing does not establish its release status or features.
The WWII focus changes what immersion means. Weapons, uniforms, objectives and battle context are tied to a historical conflict rather than a contemporary tactical sandbox. If the setting is your first priority, Hell Let Loose can be more appealing than either modern alternative even before you compare mechanics.
What is and is not established about monetization
The cited official franchise page does not provide enough detail about current paid items to classify Hell Let Loose as having cosmetic-only monetization. Do not infer a guarantee from the game’s historical setting or from the absence of a detail on that page. Before purchase, open the current store for your platform and look for whether any paid item changes weapon performance, player statistics, access to combat roles or other gameplay outcomes.

How to choose in five decisions
1. Pick your era first
Choose Hell Let Loose if WWII history is non-negotiable. Choose Squad or Insurgency: Sandstorm if you want modern conflicts. This single decision removes most of the uncertainty because the games create very different atmospheres around their settings.
2. Decide whether you want an operation or a firefight
Squad is an operation: objectives, supplies, vehicles and communications connect many local fights. Sandstorm is a firefight: the decisive information is usually the next angle, route or room. Hell Let Loose occupies the historical-frontline niche, with the cited site emphasizing real wars rather than specifying the same modern-versus-close-quarters split.
3. Be honest about voice chat
If you do not want to speak, Squad is the riskiest choice because its documented design includes several VoIP channels and recommends a microphone. Sandstorm still rewards coordination, but its documented match size makes it easier to understand the immediate situation. For Hell Let Loose, verify the current communication requirements in the game’s own documentation.

5. Verify monetization immediately before purchase
For Squad and Sandstorm, the checked pages document cosmetic, gear, texture or edition content and no paid combat advantages. For Hell Let Loose, perform the check yourself because the cited official page is insufficient. Look specifically for paid changes to damage, armor, movement, ammunition, role access or player statistics; cosmetic appearance alone is not pay-to-win.
Practical setup for a fair, communication-first experience
Use a microphone where the game expects one
Squad’s publisher recommends a microphone and supplies multiple VoIP channels. A headset with a microphone lets you hear directional cues while keeping your callouts clear. Set the input device before joining a serious match, confirm that push-to-talk is bound, and learn which key corresponds to local, squad and leader communication.
Keep callouts short and useful
- Start with the threat: infantry, vehicle or explosive.
- Add direction using a compass bearing, landmark or clock position.
- State distance or approximate range when you can.
- Say whether the contact is moving, firing or already down.
- Do not fill a command channel with speculation; pass observations and let the squad decide.
Read the store like a consumer, not a fan
- Open the game’s current platform store page.
- Expand the downloadable-content and edition sections.
- Separate visual items such as skins, textures and emotes from anything that changes combat values.
- Check whether a bundle gates a weapon, role, map or statistic behind payment.
- Repeat the check after major updates if avoiding pay-to-win systems is a firm requirement.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Confusing difficulty with pay-to-win
A game can be punishing without selling advantages. Instant death, scarce ammunition, suppression and a long learning curve are difficulty or realism choices. They do not prove that a paid item changes combat power.
Assuming cosmetic DLC can never matter
Skins, textures and emotes are normally non-statistical, but visibility can affect a specific map or lighting condition. The store descriptions cited here present them as cosmetic content; still, inspect actual item descriptions and avoid treating a marketing category as a permanent technical guarantee.
Buying for the wrong scale
Someone seeking a quick modern firefight may dislike Squad’s operational pacing. Someone seeking a 50-versus-50 combined-arms battle may find Sandstorm’s 14v14 ceiling too compact. Use the match-size and role differences above before spending money.
Entering a voice-heavy game unprepared
In Squad, joining without knowing the channels can make useful information hard to share. Configure your microphone, learn the local and squad keys, and listen before issuing instructions. Communication quality is part of the game’s skill set.
Verdict
Buy Squad for the deepest documented combination of 50-versus-50 scale, vehicles, logistics, suppression and layered VoIP. Buy Insurgency: Sandstorm for modern, close-quarters rounds where instant death and ammunition discipline make every movement matter. Buy Hell Let Loose when WWII historical battles are the deciding factor, but verify its current store because the cited official page does not establish a cosmetic-only monetization model. On the checked pages, Squad and Sandstorm show no documented pay-to-win sales; treat that as a dated store observation and recheck before purchase.
