Firefox is the strongest all-around alternative if you want to leave Microsoft’s account ecosystem without adopting another Chromium browser. Chrome is the natural choice when Google services already organize your digital life, while Brave, Vivaldi and Opera each change the balance between privacy defaults, customization, sync control and built-in tools. You can keep Edge’s bookmarks and passwords by importing them, but you should choose the new browser’s account and sync model deliberately: browser sync is convenience, not a complete backup.

Every browser below runs on Windows and can be used without making it your primary identity provider. The important difference is what happens when you turn on sync: which company stores your browser data, what categories are synchronized, and how much control you have over encryption and tracking.

Feature availability can vary by Windows edition, device, market and browser version. Check the current settings screen after installation rather than assuming that every platform exposes identical options.

Edge can synchronize favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill and payment information between signed-in devices. Moving away from Edge therefore means replacing both the browser and the service that holds those synchronized records.

A browser can have privacy-friendly defaults and still offer an optional account. Conversely, a browser can require an account for convenient multi-device continuity while collecting less browsing data by default. Evaluate these questions separately:
- Is sign-in required? Basic browsing is generally available without an account, but sync and some extras may not be.
- What is synchronized? Look for separate switches for bookmarks, passwords, history, tabs, extensions, settings, autofill and payment data.
- Who controls recovery? An account password, recovery email or locally held encryption key can determine whether forgotten credentials are recoverable.
- How is data protected? Some browsers describe encryption controls; others expose only a general sync setting.
- What telemetry choices exist? Review diagnostics, crash reports, personalization and marketing toggles independently of sync.
Do not treat a sync account as a password-manager replacement or a backup. A deleted or corrupted synced record can propagate to every connected device, and losing an encryption credential can make synchronized data inaccessible.
Firefox: the clearest break from Microsoft and Chromium
Firefox is the best fit when the goal is a different account experience and a different browser engine. It is the major non-Chromium option in this group, so it provides an independent rendering stack as well as a Mozilla account ecosystem.

What you can carry over
Mozilla documents a one-click import from Edge for bookmarks, passwords, history and preferences. After import, Firefox Sync can make bookmarks, passwords, tabs and other selected data available across your devices.
How the account works
You can browse Firefox without signing in. A Mozilla account becomes relevant when you want Sync or other account-linked features. During setup, select only the categories you need; there is no reason to synchronize history or open tabs merely because those switches exist.
Where Firefox fits best
- You want to reduce dependence on Chromium’s extension and rendering model.
- You prefer a separate account provider rather than moving from Microsoft to Google.
- You need a simple Edge import instead of manually rebuilding a profile.
Trade-offs
Some Chromium-specific sites or extensions may behave differently in Firefox. Test critical work portals, passwordless sign-ins and hardware-backed authentication before removing Edge. Keep a second browser available for sites that have not been tested in the new engine.

Chrome: continuity for Google-centered users
Chrome is the practical alternative when Gmail, Google Workspace, Android or other Google services already serve as your primary account. Google states that signing in to Chrome lets you access your information on all devices and use additional Chrome features. Sign-in itself is optional.

You can run Chrome locally without connecting a Google account. If you sign in, review the individual sync categories instead of accepting every default. Bookmarks and passwords are the usual starting point; history, tabs, extensions, settings and payment-related data should be enabled only when they solve a specific problem.
Why choose Chrome
- Existing Google credentials reduce the number of new accounts you must manage.
- Chromium compatibility minimizes surprises for sites and extensions that already worked in Edge.
- Signed-in profiles make it easy to move between Windows computers and other supported devices.
What to consider
Choosing Chrome changes the account holder from Microsoft to Google; it does not eliminate account-based synchronization. If your priority is avoiding a large provider’s account altogether, use Chrome without sign-in or choose a browser whose sync design better matches that goal.
Brave: privacy defaults with Chromium compatibility
Brave is built on Chromium and is designed to reduce common web tracking without requiring a collection of add-ons. Its documented protections include blocking third-party ads, cross-site trackers and cookies, fingerprinting protection and automatic HTTPS upgrades. Brave also supports Windows and cross-device profile syncing.
When Brave is a good match
- You want Edge-like site compatibility but stronger out-of-the-box blocking.
- You prefer to keep ordinary browsing separate from any optional sync identity.
- You want tracker and fingerprinting controls exposed in the browser rather than assembled manually.
Settings to review after installation
Open the privacy and shields controls for a few sites you rely on. Aggressive blocking can interfere with login widgets, embedded payments or web applications. When a site fails, adjust protection for that site first instead of disabling safeguards globally.

Brave’s cross-device profile sync is not the same as a traditional email-and-password account. Read the current Sync setup screen carefully, note what data types are offered, and record any recovery information it provides. Keep an independent password-manager export regardless of the sync method.

Vivaldi: customization and locally held encryption control
Vivaldi targets users who want to shape the browser around their workflow. It supports synchronization of bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, open tabs and settings. Vivaldi says the encryption password is used locally and never sent to Vivaldi or another third party, which means the company cannot decrypt the synchronized data.
Why its account model is different
The encryption password is separate from simply knowing that a sync account exists. Because the encryption secret is not transmitted, losing it can prevent recovery of the encrypted sync data. Store it in a reputable password manager before enabling Sync.
Useful workflow scenarios
- Synchronize open tabs and settings between a desktop and a laptop while keeping the interface customized on both.
- Move passwords and extensions together when setting up a second Windows machine.
- Keep encryption under your control rather than relying only on a provider-held key.
Important limitation
Vivaldi explicitly warns that Sync is not a backup service. Export critical credentials and bookmarks separately, and test restoration before treating synchronization as part of your recovery plan.

Opera: bundled convenience tools
Opera is aimed at people who want more than a minimal page viewer. Its documented features include an accountless in-browser VPN, ad and tracker blockers, Flow for sharing content between devices and workspaces for separating tasks. Opera is Chromium-based, so most Edge-compatible sites should remain familiar.
Accountless features
The in-browser VPN does not require an Opera account for basic use. That does not make every Opera feature account-free: check the sign-in prompt for Sync or Flow and decide whether the convenience is worth creating another identity.
Who should choose Opera
- People who regularly split projects into separate workspaces.
- Users who want quick cross-device sharing through Flow instead of full profile synchronization.
- Readers who prefer built-in tools over assembling extensions.
VPN qualification
A browser VPN is generally a browser-traffic feature, not a replacement for a device-wide VPN. Do not assume that other Windows applications receive the same protection. Review the current feature description and regional availability before relying on it for a specific task.

How to move from Edge without losing access
Use this sequence whether you select Firefox, Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi or Opera. It keeps your original profile intact until the new browser has been verified.
- Make an independent password copy. Export or copy your credentials into a trusted password manager before changing browsers. Treat the export as sensitive, store it securely and delete temporary files after importing.
- Preserve Edge data. Keep Edge installed and signed in. Do not clear its profile or uninstall it while you are still checking logins, passkeys, extensions and payment sites.
- Install the replacement from its official Windows download page. Avoid repackaged installers and verify that the downloaded application matches the publisher and your Windows architecture.
- Open the new browser’s import tool. Select Microsoft Edge as the source. Microsoft documents importing favorites and passwords from another browser and from HTML or CSV files; the exact menu label differs by browser version.
- Choose data deliberately. Import bookmarks and passwords first. Add history, settings or open tabs only if you need them. Payment and autofill data deserve a separate review because their availability and handling differ by browser.
- Check the imported records. Open several folders of bookmarks, search for important saved logins and confirm that usernames and URLs match. Do not assume that a successful import means every entry was accepted.
- Create or skip an account. Sign in only when the browser’s sync benefits match your privacy and continuity requirements. A local profile is valid if you use one Windows device or prefer manual transfers.
- Enable the minimum sync scope. Start with bookmarks and passwords. Add tabs, history, extensions or settings one category at a time, then record the choices for future troubleshooting.
- Verify on a second device. Install the same browser on another Windows computer or supported device and confirm that selected data arrives. Test a login without deleting the original Edge entry.
- Retire Edge gradually. Make the new browser default only after critical sites, passkeys, extensions, downloads and work profiles function correctly. Keep Edge available until that checklist is complete.
Migration problems and fixes
Some passwords did not import
Browser password stores can be protected by the operating system, and an import may omit entries that are locked, duplicated or stored under an unsupported format. Reopen Edge, unlock the profile, export only through its supported process, and import the resulting file into the new browser or password manager. Delete the plaintext export immediately after verification.
Bookmarks appear in the wrong place
Import tools often create a folder named after the source browser. Search that folder before assuming data is missing, then move or merge folders manually. Keep the original Edge favorites until you have checked the complete hierarchy.
A site rejects the new browser
First test in a private window with extensions disabled. If the site works there, re-enable extensions individually. In Firefox, a Chromium-only extension may need a different version; in Chromium-based alternatives, a site may be reacting to a privacy shield, cookie rule or user-agent difference.
Sync is empty on the second device
Confirm that both devices use the same account or pairing method, that Sync is enabled for the desired categories and that the browser is online. Vivaldi users must also enter the same encryption password. Check whether synchronization is paused by a sign-in, security or version prompt before changing settings.
You lost a sync encryption password
Do not reset the original device until you have checked for an independent export. Provider designs differ, but locally held encryption keys may not be recoverable by support. This is why a password manager and bookmark export belong outside the browser sync system.

Choosing by priority
Choose Firefox when engine independence matters
Firefox is the only major non-Chromium choice in this comparison and combines that distinction with Mozilla account continuity and a documented Edge import.
Choose Chrome when your identity is already Google
Chrome minimizes account friction for Google users and keeps the Chromium behavior familiar, while leaving sign-in optional.
Choose Brave when privacy defaults come first
Brave adds blocking, fingerprinting defenses and HTTPS upgrades without asking you to leave Chromium compatibility.
Choose Vivaldi when control and customization come first
Vivaldi offers the broadest documented sync scope and an encryption password that remains local, at the cost of greater responsibility for recovery.

Opera’s workspaces, Flow, blockers and accountless browser VPN appeal to users who value convenience features in one installation.
Privacy checklist after setup
- Review every sync category and disable anything you do not need on another device.
- Turn off optional diagnostics, personalization and marketing settings that do not serve your workflow.
- Use a separate password manager and maintain an up-to-date encrypted backup.
- Protect the browser account with a unique password and multi-factor authentication when offered.
- Test passkeys, security keys and corporate sign-ins before deleting Edge data.
- Document which browser profile owns each set of bookmarks and passwords so a future migration is reversible.
The best Edge alternative is therefore not a universal winner. It is the browser whose account requirement, synchronization scope, engine and privacy controls match the way you want to use Windows. Decide those four things first, migrate conservatively, and keep an independent copy of the data that would be hardest to replace.
