Do not launch a questionable AI installer while you investigate it. Update Defender, run a full scan, and submit the file hash or file to VirusTotal for a multi-engine view. If a reputable engine identifies malware, quarantine the installer, remove it, reset any credentials entered during the incident, and check for persistence or browser changes.
No single product is permanently “the best.” Independent tests show that detection percentages and false-alarm counts vary by test date and clean-file set. Choose a scanner by balancing malware blocking, PUA and bundle controls, reputation checks, behavior analysis, remediation, and the amount of disruption caused by false positives.

What makes a fake AI installer dangerous?
A fake installer is a malicious program presented as a legitimate AI application, plugin, update, or desktop client. Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and uses the Trojan as an example of software that pretends to be something it is not. A file can also be unwanted without meeting the usual definition of malware: Microsoft’s potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) may display intrusive advertising, secretly use a computer for cryptomining, bundle additional software, or otherwise reduce control and performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAI branding gives criminals several convincing stories. A download page may imitate ChatGPT, Copilot, DeepSeek, or Claude; an email may contain an “urgent” update; or a browser and productivity plugin may promise local AI features. Microsoft Security has documented campaigns using those names. In one observed case, a counterfeit AI Windows plugin delivered the Vidar information stealer. Fraudulent DeepSeek installers were also distributed through GitHub. The lure can arrive through a search result, social post, direct message, attachment, or an otherwise legitimate-looking software repository.

That is why scanning only after installation is risky. A stealer can collect browser cookies or passwords before you notice a visible problem, and a bundled PUA can change browser settings or consume resources without being classified as a destructive virus. Treat the installer itself as untrusted until its source, signature, reputation, and scan results agree.
Which scanner should you use?
The practical choice is a layered workflow rather than one download-and-trust decision. The following tools serve different roles.
| Tool or category | Best use | What it contributes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus | Baseline protection on modern Windows | Real-time malware blocking, full scans, quarantine, and PUA blocking when enabled | False alarms can be higher than some competitors in particular test sets |
| Commercial antivirus engines | Continuous protection and additional detection layers | Independent engines may add behavior monitoring, reputation checks, web filtering, and remediation | Results differ by product, release, test date, and clean-file set; a high block rate can come with disruptive false positives |
| VirusTotal | Second opinion before execution | Shows detections and labels from many antivirus engines for a submitted file or URL | Uploading a file can expose its contents to VirusTotal customers; one clean engine is not proof of safety |
| Malwarebytes | Supplemental scanning and scam-focused checks | Machine-learning detection, behavioral heuristics, real-time blocking, human-guided updates, and Scam Guard analysis of suspicious messages, pop-ups, texts, or domains | Use it as an additional layer or second opinion, not as a reason to ignore a warning from another reputable engine |
Microsoft Defender: the correct first step for Windows
Defender is built into current Windows versions and is the sensible starting point because it can block malware before infection, scan an existing download, and quarantine detected files. Its PUA feature can block a PUA file and attempts to download, move, run, or install it. In a managed environment, administrators can use audit mode first to measure what would be blocked and review false-positive impact before enforcing blocking.

Commercial engines: compare the trade-off, not one headline score
Paid and free commercial products can add web, behavior, and remediation features, but their value depends on how often they stop real threats without interrupting legitimate software. AV-Comparatives explicitly notes that a product detecting a high percentage of malicious files but generating many false alarms is not necessarily better than one detecting slightly fewer samples with fewer false alarms.
VirusTotal: evidence, not permission to run
VirusTotal is useful when the installer’s origin is uncertain or when you want to see whether multiple engines agree. It displays whether each participating antivirus solution detected the submitted file and the label assigned by that engine. Signatures change as vendors publish new sets, so a result is a point-in-time view. Do not execute a suspicious installer merely because one engine reports it as clean.
Malwarebytes: a supplemental scanner and scam layer
Malwarebytes describes a combination of machine-learning detection, behavioral heuristics, real-time blocking, and human-guided updates. Its Scam Guard examines suspicious texts, pop-ups, messages, and domains, which is useful when the dangerous step is the link that leads to the installer. Malwarebytes also reports that one in five mobile users have been targeted by a deepfake scam; that figure is vendor-reported and the cited page does not state a publication year, so treat it as an awareness statistic rather than a current population estimate.

What independent tests actually show
Independent laboratory snapshots help set expectations, but they are not permanent rankings. The September 2025 AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test used 9,995 samples. Total online protection reached 100% for Microsoft, ESET, G Data, and McAfee; Bitdefender scored 99.99%; Malwarebytes scored 99.88%.
| Product | September 2025 total online protection |
|---|---|
| Microsoft | 100% |
| ESET | 100% |
| G Data | 100% |
| McAfee | 100% |
| Bitdefender | 99.99% |
| Malwarebytes | 99.88% |
That same September clean-file set produced the following false-alarm counts:
| Product or group | False alarms |
|---|---|
| Kaspersky | 3 |
| Trend Micro | 6 |
| Bitdefender | 7 |
| Total Defense | 7 |
| Avast, AVG, K7, and Norton | 8 each |
| ESET and G Data | 10 each |
| Microsoft | 27 |
| Malwarebytes | 28 |
The March 2025 AV-Comparatives test used 10,030 samples and produced a different ordering: Bitdefender, G Data, and Total Defense each reached 99.97% protection; Microsoft reached 99.94%; and Malwarebytes reached 99.51%. In that test’s clean-file set, false alarms were 5 for Bitdefender, 6 for ESET, 10 for Microsoft, and 53 for Malwarebytes.

These numbers describe the named test cycles, not a guarantee for every fake AI installer you encounter. Malware families, signatures, cloud verdicts, product versions, and the clean files selected by the laboratory all change. Use the results to ask two questions: does the product block current malware, and how much legitimate software might it wrongly interrupt?
A safe workflow for checking an AI installer
- Stop before execution. Do not double-click the file, open it from a temporary folder, or bypass a browser warning. Record the exact filename, download URL, claimed publisher, file size, and whether Windows shows a digital-signature status. This preserves evidence and helps you find a clean replacement.
- Find the official distribution point. Re-download only from the AI vendor’s official domain or a trusted app store. A search advertisement, GitHub account, mirror, or social-media attachment can imitate the real product even when the name and icon look correct. If the vendor does not publish a Windows installer, treat an “official-looking” EXE as especially suspicious.
- Update Windows security intelligence. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, check for protection updates, and allow the intelligence update to complete. Current signatures improve the chance that a newly distributed stealer or bundled PUA is recognized.
- Run a full Defender scan. From Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start it. Leave the installer untouched while the scan runs. Review the protection history afterward; do not restore a quarantined file simply because the filename resembles a legitimate AI app.
- Enable PUA protection. In Virus & threat protection settings, open the controls for potentially unwanted app blocking and enable blocking for both detected applications and downloads when those options are available. Labels vary by Windows edition and policy. Administrators who need to measure false positives can begin in audit mode, review events, and then switch to block mode.
- Get a multi-engine second opinion. Submit the file’s hash to VirusTotal when available; a hash check avoids uploading the file. If no result exists, submit the file or its URL only after considering confidentiality. VirusTotal warns that uploaded files may be exposed to its customers, so never upload confidential documents, private source code, customer data, or credentials. Compare the number and quality of detections, the age of the result, and the labels; one clean result does not overrule several credible malware detections.
- Contain a positive result. If Defender, VirusTotal, or another reputable engine reports malware, quarantine and remove the installer. If you opened it or entered credentials afterward, reset those credentials from a known-clean device, revoke active sessions where the service supports it, and inspect browser extensions, proxy settings, scheduled tasks, startup entries, and newly created accounts for persistence. Preserve the filename and hashes for an administrator or incident-response provider.
How to judge a warning that says “PUA”
PUA is not a declaration that every file with that label is a destructive virus. It means the software may have unwanted behavior such as advertising, bundling, cryptomining, or loss of control over settings. A fake AI installer often uses a legitimate application as a wrapper for those behaviors, so the warning deserves investigation rather than an automatic exclusion.
- Check provenance: compare the download domain with the vendor’s documented domain and confirm that the publisher name and signature match.
- Check behavior: ask whether the installer requests unrelated browser extensions, security exclusions, administrator rights, or cryptocurrency components.
- Check consensus: compare Defender’s result with VirusTotal’s engine labels and a second local scanner. Multiple independent detections are stronger evidence than one isolated label.
- Do not create an exception to meet a deadline: an exclusion can allow a stealer to run and can hide the event from later scans.
When a commercial scanner is worth considering
A commercial product can make sense when you need protection beyond the Windows baseline, manage several devices, or want additional web and behavior controls. Compare products on the same axes rather than choosing from a single “best antivirus” list:
Best Value
- Protection against current samples: look for recent independent tests and note the sample count and date.
- False-alarm burden: inspect the clean-file results. Excessive warnings can lead users to approve real threats or abandon protection.
- PUA and bundle blocking: verify that the product can block unwanted applications and installers, not just files already classified as viruses.
- URL and download reputation: determine whether links and downloads are checked before execution.
- Behavior or sandbox analysis: this can catch a new stealer whose file signature is not yet known.
- Remediation: check whether detections are quarantined, whether rollback is available, and how clearly the product explains the event.
- Ease of use and operating-system coverage: a technically strong engine is less useful if users routinely disable it or if it does not cover the devices you actually run.
Protection for organizations receiving AI installers by email or chat
Organizations should inspect the delivery channel as well as the endpoint. Microsoft’s recommended protection chain includes anti-phishing controls, Safe Links URL scanning and detonation, and Safe Attachments detonation when those policies are configured. These controls can examine a link or attachment before a user reaches the fake installer.
Endpoint policy should keep Defender real-time protection and PUA blocking enforced, while audit mode can be used temporarily to measure false-positive impact during deployment. Security teams should preserve the original URL, attachment, hash, sender, and detection time; those details help correlate a campaign across mailboxes and endpoints.
Common mistakes that make fake installers succeed
- Trusting the logo or product name: filenames and icons are trivial to copy.
- Running a “fix” offered by a pop-up: a warning page that demands an installer is itself a strong phishing signal.
- Assuming GitHub means safe: fraudulent DeepSeek installers were distributed through GitHub, so repository hosting is not proof of publisher identity.
- Using only one scan: signatures and cloud verdicts differ; a single clean engine cannot establish safety.
- Uploading confidential files to a scanner: use a hash lookup when possible and avoid submitting private material to VirusTotal.
- Ignoring browser and account changes: a stealer may leave no obvious desktop symptom. After an exposure, reset credentials and inspect persistence points.
A decision rule you can apply in seconds
If the installer is from an unverified domain, do not run it: obtain a fresh copy from the official source. If the source is official but Defender reports a PUA, inspect the publisher, signature, requested permissions, and multi-engine results before deciding; do not add an exclusion merely to proceed. If any reputable engine reports a Trojan, stealer, or other malware, quarantine and remove the file and treat any credentials entered afterward as compromised. If scans are clean but the source, signature, or behavior remains inconsistent, stop and ask the vendor for a verified distribution method.
Recommended Free Tools
For most Windows readers, this produces the strongest practical balance: Defender with PUA protection as the always-on baseline, careful sourcing and SmartScreen kept enabled, VirusTotal as a privacy-aware second opinion, and a supplemental scanner such as Malwarebytes when you need another local or scam-focused check. Independent test results can inform a commercial purchase, but they should never replace cautious handling of the installer itself.
