The best MacBook for you depends on how much screen space you want and whether your work benefits from the extra ports and display features of a MacBook Pro. Apple’s 2026 lineup includes 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models with M5, plus 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro or M5 Max. The available product information supports a practical shortlist by use case, not a tested or independently ranked top three.
Which MacBook should you choose?
- Choose the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 if a smaller screen is a better fit for carrying your laptop and you want the Air family’s basic feature set.
- Choose the 15-inch MacBook Air with M5 if you want a larger built-in display but do not need the Pro’s broader port selection.
- Consider a 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro if your work calls for the Pro lineup’s XDR display, Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, and SDXC. Apple positions M5 Pro for complex workflows and M5 Max for especially demanding work; those are Apple’s workload descriptions, not independent performance findings.
These are use-case recommendations based on Apple’s published specifications. No independent tests establish a universal winner, and the exact configuration and price matter: compare memory, storage, and current listings before buying.

2026 MacBook Air with M5: the everyday option
13-inch: prioritize a smaller screen
The 13-inch Air is the smaller-screen choice in the Air family. Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement lists a US launch price of $1,099, or $999 for education buyers. Those are launch prices, not current quotes. Apple said preorders opened March 4 and general availability began March 11, 2026. Apple’s MacBook Air announcement

M5 Pro or M5 Max?
Apple describes M5 Pro as aimed at complex workflows and M5 Max at especially demanding work. Treat that as the manufacturer’s positioning, not proof that either chip is necessary for a particular job. Match the chip to the applications and workload you actually use, and look for independent testing of those specific tasks if performance is a deciding factor.

How to make the final choice
- Set your screen-size preference. Compare the 13- and 15-inch Air if you want an Air, or the 14- and 16-inch Pro if you need Pro features. Screen size alone does not establish which model is easier to carry.
- Identify the ports and displays you need. The Air has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and Apple says it supports up to two external displays. The Pro announcement lists Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, SDXC, and MagSafe 3. Check that your existing displays and peripherals work with the model you select.
- Choose a chip and storage configuration for your workload. Compare the actual apps and projects you use, plus the storage you need. Do not assume a higher-tier chip is automatically worthwhile for every buyer.
- Compare current prices for like-for-like configurations. Apple’s published launch figures are dated 2026 starting prices; retailer prices and available configurations can differ. Verify the model, chip, memory, and storage in the live listing rather than comparing starting prices alone.
- Look for independent tests if performance or battery life is decisive. The figures above are manufacturer claims. Apple’s Mac lineup page and technical specifications page can help confirm product details, but neither turns launch claims into independent test results.
What this shortlist can—and cannot—establish
Apple’s announcements document the 2026 Air and Pro models, their listed features, and selected launch prices. They do not establish which three MacBooks are objectively best through independent testing. Apple’s Mac archive also lists a MacBook Neo announcement dated March 4, 2026, but the available product details here are insufficient for a fair comparison with Air and Pro.
