Best Low-Latency Streaming Settings for YouTube Live

Pick YouTube Live latency based on how quickly viewers need to respond, then match encoder settings to your resolution, codec, and upload connection.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose YouTube’s low latency for limited audience interaction and ultra-low for real-time conversation; use normal when interaction is not important or buffering tolerance is low. Lower latency leaves less buffer between the encoder and viewers, so it can increase playback buffering. Low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K.

Choose a latency mode that fits the event

YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture at the camera and display to viewers. Its estimates describe what most viewers may experience, not a promised delay for an individual stream. The reviewed YouTube Help page does not state a publication date or methodology for those estimates.

Mode Best fit YouTube’s viewer-latency description Trade-offs
Normal Non-interactive streams, such as a presentation where replies do not need to be quick No numerical estimate on the reviewed page Lowest amount of viewer buffering; supports all resolutions and live features.
Low Limited interaction, such as polls where replies need not be immediate Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds Middle ground between interaction and buffering; 4K is unsupported.
Ultra-low Real-time conversation and highly interactive events Most viewers experience less than five seconds Greater chance of playback buffering and greater sensitivity to ingestion-network problems; 4K is unsupported.

YouTube’s descriptions are estimates, not guarantees. At lower latency the player has less read-ahead buffer, so network congestion or other problems between encoder and player can become more noticeable, even if the connection sustains the average bitrate. See YouTube’s explanation of live-streaming latency.

Set the latency option in YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the stream dashboard’s Stream Settings.
  2. Choose Normal latency, Low latency, or Ultra low-latency according to the interaction needs and buffering trade-offs above.
  3. Test the stream before the event and check stream health while live. Webcam and mobile streams are always configured for interactivity; YouTube does not offer a selectable latency mode for those streams.

YouTube’s steps and mode descriptions are in its latency help page.

Use encoder settings YouTube recommends

For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s guidance accessed October 3, 2026 lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP that encrypts data in transit to and through Google’s servers.

Recommended video bitrates for common resolutions

These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates, not minimums and not guarantees of picture quality or playback latency. The same table lists lower minimums; for example, at 1080p60 its minimum is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

Use the recommendation for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, but do not set a bitrate your upload connection cannot reliably sustain. A speed test can help check upload capacity; YouTube also advises choosing a quality your connection can support and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance and bitrate table are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other encoder parameters

  • Audio: AAC or MP3; stereo sampling at 44.1 kHz and stereo bitrate of 128 Kbps.
  • Picture format: square pixels and progressive scan.
  • H.264 parameters: two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
  • Color: Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube lists H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Test the actual stream before the event

  1. Run a test with movement and audio comparable to the planned broadcast; a static test may not reveal issues that appear with busier video or sound.
  2. Check the upload bitrate with a speed test and select an encoder bitrate the connection can sustain reliably.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and event. If the feed struggles, reduce the selected quality or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain.
  4. Consider a wired connection only if it suits your setup. YouTube’s guidance calls for a network that can sustain the bitrate; it does not specifically require Ethernet or claim that a cable will reduce latency. A cable cannot guarantee against congestion or buffering.

These testing and monitoring steps follow YouTube’s encoder recommendations.

Protect the stream key

The stream key identifies which encoder feed YouTube should accept, and the stream URL tells the encoder where to send that feed. Enter them in the encoder as directed by YouTube, and treat the key as sensitive: it acts like the stream’s password and address. YouTube explains these settings at Manage live stream settings.

Or let it run in the cloud
