The best OBS screen-recording hotkeys are the ones you assign in Settings > Hotkeys and can press deliberately without triggering shortcuts in the app you are capturing. OBS does not prescribe one universal default key for starting or stopping a recording, so check the Hotkeys screen in your installed version rather than relying on a supposedly standard combination.
How to set start and stop recording hotkeys in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings from the main window.
- Choose Hotkeys in the Settings panel.
- Find the recording actions, such as Start Recording and Stop Recording, and assign a key or key combination to each. The exact labels and available controls can vary by installed build.
- If you use pause-and-resume recording, assign those actions too if they are available in your build. Keep each binding easy to remember and distinct from the others.
- Select Apply or OK to save the settings, then make a brief test recording. Check that the file was created, its audio is present, and the stop binding works before relying on the setup for an important capture.
OBS allows users to assign hotkeys for recording and other actions. Its documentation does not establish a single objectively best key or universal recording default, so choose bindings for your keyboard, workflow, and the software being captured. OBS Studio Overview Guide

Choosing useful bindings without accidental triggers
- Make the keys deliberate to press. A combination can help reduce accidental starts or stops, but it should still be reachable while you are working.
- Use different bindings for start and stop. This makes the two actions easier to distinguish under pressure.
- Check for conflicts in the captured app. A hotkey that also activates a command in a game, editor, or presentation app can interrupt the recording workflow.
- Keep the starter set small. Start and stop are the essential controls. Add pause, scene switching, or source visibility only when those actions are part of your capture routine.
- Test the complete path. Confirm that the hotkeys work with OBS focused and, if needed, while another app is active; behavior can depend on your setup.
OBS also identifies scene changes and showing or hiding sources as possible hotkey actions. The Overview Guide describes keyboard hotkeys and joystick-button mapping to common keyboard keys with antimicro on Linux and Windows; check that mapping on your own system rather than assuming every controller or setup behaves the same way. OBS defaults versus configurable recording hotkeys
The OBS Keyboard Shortcuts page lists general commands and shortcuts for editing sources and the preview, with separate Windows/Linux and macOS columns. Those are not the same thing as an assigned recording control. For example, its Windows/Linux source-transform shortcuts include Ctrl+F to fit a source to the screen, Ctrl+S to stretch it to the screen, and Ctrl+D to center it; the corresponding macOS entries use Command-key combinations. These operate on source or preview editing, not recording start and stop.

For recording controls, use Settings > Hotkeys and inspect the actions shown by your own OBS installation. The published shortcut list does not supply a universal default for starting or stopping recording, and interface details may differ between versions.
Hotkeys, launch parameters, and Replay Buffer: which control fits?

OBS documents --startrecording as a launch parameter, not an in-app keyboard binding. The same official page lists --startreplaybuffer to start Replay Buffer at launch. These options are useful for startup automation, but they do not replace configurable hotkeys when you want to control recording after OBS opens. OBS Launch Parameters

Set up Replay Buffer separately
Replay Buffer is for retaining a recent stretch of footage, rather than recording the entire session from the moment you press Start Recording. OBS provides separate actions to start and stop Replay Buffer and to save a replay. To save buffered footage, first enable Replay Buffer and assign its save hotkey. Troubleshooting OBS recording hotkeys
- Pressing a key does not start or stop recording: Reopen Settings > Hotkeys and check that the intended action has a binding. Verify the action wording in your installed build and test again.
- The captured app responds instead: The chosen combination may conflict with that app’s own shortcut. Assign another binding in OBS and test it while the target app is in use.
- You cannot find the expected action: OBS labels and available controls can differ by build. Search the Hotkeys page in your installed version instead of assuming an online shortcut list applies to it.
- Replay Buffer saves nothing: Check that Replay Buffer is enabled and that its save action has a hotkey assigned. A normal recording start/stop binding does not by itself save a replay.
- You expected a key to start recording as OBS opens: An in-app hotkey is pressed after OBS is running. For startup automation, OBS documents the separate
--startrecordinglaunch parameter.
