For a budget-conscious 24/7 YouTube channel, start by evaluating a Google Compute Engine E2 VM in Mumbai (asia-south1) or Delhi (asia-south2), then test the exact stream workload before settling on a machine size. E2 is Google’s cost-optimized general-purpose family, but shared-core VMs time-share CPU; no source establishes that a particular E2 size can encode a demanding live feed reliably. Your actual bill also depends on disk and outbound transfer, so use the pricing calculator with your billing account and configuration rather than relying on a generic monthly estimate.
What setup should you start with?
For a simple continuous stream, make an E2 Compute Engine VM your first candidate. Compare the shared-core E2 options, but treat the smallest size as a test candidate, not a proven recommendation. Google describes E2 as a cost-optimized general-purpose VM family; shared-core instances time-share CPU. That may suit lightweight playback and forwarding or a simple loop of already-encoded video, but it does not establish performance for real-time encoding, compositing, or transcoding.

If your workflow encodes or combines sources on the VM, run it for an extended period at the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Choose a larger configuration if monitoring shows inadequate CPU or memory headroom, or dropped frames. Google Cloud’s documentation describes E2 pricing and characteristics at E2 machine series.
Choose a region by price and measured stream health
Google lists E2 availability in both Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2). There is no basis here to call either one universally faster or cheaper for your channel. Put the intended region and VM configuration into Google Cloud’s pricing calculator, then test the actual path from your encoder to YouTube in each candidate region if both are practical.

Compare more than initial connection speed: observe stream health during normal operation and after a network interruption. Use the region that best fits your account’s calculated cost and measured ingest stability.
Estimate the complete monthly cost
Model the bill as VM runtime plus boot and persistent disk, outbound network transfer, and any other services your design uses. Google’s Compute Engine overview lists a free-tier allowance equivalent to one e2-micro VM for the total hours in a month, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk, and up to 1 GB of outbound data transfer monthly. These are limited allowances, not a guarantee that a 24/7 streaming setup will be free: your selected VM may not qualify, and sustained video traffic can exceed the transfer allowance. Do not assume an E2 sustained-use discount
E2 does not receive sustained-use discounts. Google states: “The E2 machine series doesn’t offer sustained use discounts (SUDs); however, it provides consistently low on-demand and committed-use pricing.” E2 has commitment discount options, but compare those only once the region and workload are stable, and verify the terms and account eligibility. Spot VMs may cost less but can be interrupted, making them a poor default when continuous operation is the goal. Review current pricing details in Google’s discount documentation and calculator before committing.
Why an exact rupee total would be misleading
There is no workload-specific VM size, disk configuration, transfer volume, or billing-account input that supports a universal monthly total. Calculate those components for your own configuration and region; revise the estimate if your stream’s measured outbound traffic or resource use differs from your assumptions.

Configure YouTube ingest and protect the stream key
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p and 30 fps, or 6 Mbps at 720p and 30 fps. These are ingest recommendations, not proof that a particular VM or network can sustain the feed. Allow dependable upload headroom above the selected bitrate and test the stream under real conditions. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into viewing formats, so you do not need to pre-create every playback rendition. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.
- Set the encoder output. Select RTMPS, H.264, CBR, and the resolution and frame rate you plan to deliver. Use the bitrate guidance above as a starting point, then check actual stream health.
- Set keyframes. Use a two-second interval and keep it at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Enter the stream key privately. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key out of public scripts, logs, and screenshots. Rotate it if it is exposed. Find the relevant guidance in YouTube’s stream-key help.
- Test before going public. Check audio and representative motion, inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and monitor the live feed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance while validating the configuration.
Plan for failures instead of assuming 24/7 uptime
A single VM is a single point of failure. A 24/7 target needs process supervision and restart behavior, alerts, a tested reconnect strategy, and a recovery plan for VM or zone problems. Test how your chosen encoder reconnects after a network interruption and verify that the stream resumes as expected. Consider a second encoder or failover design only if the cost of an outage justifies the added complexity and expense.

Google Cloud and YouTube’s cited guidance do not establish an end-to-end uptime guarantee for this single-VM design. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but that does not certify a specific cloud architecture or availability percentage.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Encoder drops frames or cannot hold the target settings: Check CPU and memory headroom during a sustained run. Shared-core E2 instances time-share CPU, and no particular size is certified here for your encoding workload. Test a larger configuration if resource pressure persists.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Confirm RTMPS, CBR, the target bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Check that the VM’s actual outbound path has reliable headroom above the selected bitrate, then test again.
- The stream does not reconnect after a brief outage: Verify the encoder’s reconnect behavior and process restart configuration. Simulate an interruption before depending on the setup, and add alerts so you know when recovery fails.
- The invoice is higher than expected: Separate VM runtime, boot and persistent disk, outbound transfer, and other services in the estimate. Recheck region, usage assumptions, free-tier eligibility, and whether you incorrectly counted a sustained-use discount for E2.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as a credential. Rotate it in YouTube and update the encoder’s private configuration; remove it from public logs, scripts, or screenshots.
