Scheduling a YouTube Live event does not make OBS restart when your computer reboots. To resume a prerecorded loop automatically, configure three separate parts: the YouTube event and its stream settings, OBS and its looping video source, and your computer’s startup task. Then test the complete chain with a real reboot.
How the automatic restart works
YouTube scheduling creates an event viewers can find and set reminders for. It does not start OBS or turn your computer back on. OBS must launch, load the intended scene and media, and connect to YouTube. YouTube’s stream-level auto-start setting determines whether the encoder can start the scheduled broadcast without you clicking Go live.

The setup below uses OBS Studio on a computer that is configured to power back up after an outage. The exact operating-system startup steps vary with the OS, account, and whether a user must log in; the OBS launch parameter alone does not configure that startup task.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Schedule or select the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use the Manage tab to create a scheduled stream or select the event you intend to use. YouTube scheduling is useful for promoting the event and allowing viewers to set reminders. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Open the event’s stream settings and note the server URL and stream key. The stream key functions like a password for sending the encoder feed: keep it out of screenshots, scripts, logs, and public instructions. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. YouTube explains stream settings and key management in Manage live stream settings and connection troubleshooting in Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Use the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted extension of RTMP; do not assume a plain RTMP address is interchangeable. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Decide whether the event should start as soon as OBS connects. YouTube’s auto-start setting lets the encoder start the stream; if it is off, plan to monitor Live Control Room and click Go live after the preview appears. Auto-start is a stream setting, not a command to launch OBS or boot the computer.
2. Connect OBS to the YouTube stream
- Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if the available service setup fits your event, or select the custom server option and enter the RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. OBS labels may vary by version.
- Save the settings and confirm the selected YouTube destination is the intended event. Do not paste the key into a public scene name, script, or troubleshooting post.
- If YouTube auto-start is enabled, the encoder connection can initiate the broadcast. If it is disabled, OBS can connect and show a preview, but a person must complete the event’s Go live step in Live Control Room.
3. Add a looping video or playlist
One prerecorded file
- In the OBS scene you want to use, select Sources > + > Media Source.
- Create or select the source, enable Loop, and browse to the video file. OBS Media Source supports local video files and a loop option; details are in OBS Media Sources.
- Keep the file at a stable path. If it is on an external drive, verify that drive is mounted and accessible after reboot.
A playlist of videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source type.
- Add a VLC Video source and add the files in the order you want them to play.
- Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents it as enabled by default, but check the setting rather than relying on the default. See OBS Media Sources.
- Keep every playlist file at a stable, readable path and make sure any external storage is available when the computer starts.
4. Launch OBS after the computer restarts
First make sure the computer itself is configured to power on again after the kind of reboot you expect. Then configure your operating system to open OBS either at system startup or after the relevant user logs in. The right method depends on the OS, login/session arrangement, permissions, and whether OBS needs an interactive graphics session; do not assume a service-style background task can access the same scene and media environment.

- Replaceable Battery: User-friendly design allows for easy battery replacement with just a Phillips screwdriver.
- Use your OS’s startup app or task scheduler to launch OBS for the account and session that owns the correct OBS profile and scene collection.
- Add OBS’s documented
--startstreaminglaunch parameter so OBS starts streaming when it opens. OBS documents this parameter in Launch Parameters. - On Windows, if you use a scheduled or automated launch, set the task’s Start in (working directory) to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS specifies in its launch guide. - Confirm the task uses the intended OBS executable, user account, profile, and scene collection. Check any OS options that might prevent launching until a user signs in or that stop the computer from waking or powering back on.
Automatic reconnect can help with a temporary network interruption while OBS is running. It is not the same as reboot recovery: after a reboot, the operating system must start OBS again, and the OBS launch configuration must restore the stream.
5. Test the full reboot path before relying on it
YouTube recommends testing the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, and confirming the watch page is accessible. A full reboot drill checks the additional local startup steps too. YouTube’s guidance is at YouTube live streaming tips.

- Check that the correct scene opens, the media file is found, and playback continues or begins looping.
- Check OBS’s connection status and the Live Control Room preview. If auto-start is off, perform the manual Go live action; if it is on, verify the event enters the expected state.
- Open the watch page using its intended visibility setting—public, unlisted, or private—and confirm it is accessible to the people who should see it.
- Repeat the drill after changing the stream key, event, profile, file path, login behavior, or startup task.
Troubleshooting after a reboot
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS never opens | The startup task is disabled, runs for another account, or depends on a login that has not happened. | Check the OS startup or scheduled task, its trigger and account, permissions, and whether the computer actually powered back on. |
| OBS opens but does not start streaming | The launch parameter is missing or malformed, or OBS opened in the wrong context. | Check the OBS launch command includes --startstreaming and that the task starts the intended OBS executable and profile. Review OBS Launch Parameters. |
| OBS connects but YouTube waits for confirmation | YouTube auto-start is off. | Check the event’s stream settings. Leave auto-start off if you want a person to approve the broadcast, and click Go live after checking the preview. |
| YouTube reports no connection or a rejected stream | The server URL or key may be wrong, stale, or copied from a different event; the connection may also be unavailable. | Compare OBS with the current Live Control Room server URL and key, confirm RTMPS where supported, and consult YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guide. Reset an exposed key and update OBS. |
| The source is blank or stops after one play | The media path is unavailable after reboot, the drive is not mounted, or the loop option is off. | Open the source properties, confirm the file or playlist paths, check drive access, and verify Loop or Loop Playlist. |
| The stream runs but viewers cannot watch it | The event may be private, unlisted, not yet live, or otherwise not in the expected state. | Check the event visibility and status in Live Control Room, then test the watch page from the intended viewer context. |

A successful reboot test only proves that the technical chain works. It does not establish that you have the rights to stream every video or that a scheduled broadcast complies with YouTube’s rules.
