Best Linux Software for Looping 4K 60fps Video to YouTube Live

OBS Studio is the strongest general Linux starting point for looping a local video or playlist to YouTube Live. Here is how to configure the loop, match YouTube’s 4K60 settings, test stability and troubleshoot common problems.

OBS Studio is the best general starting point on Linux for looping a local 4K 60fps video to YouTube Live. Use its Media Source for a single file, or its VLC Video Source for a playlist. OBS provides the playback loop controls; your computer, encoder and internet connection still have to sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate. This is a workflow-fit recommendation based on documented features, not a benchmark claiming OBS is fastest or most reliable on every Linux system.

Which Linux option fits your stream?

Option Best fit What to know
OBS Studio Media Source Looping one local video file Available on Linux and includes a Loop control. Playback and encoding performance depend on your system. OBS Media Sources
OBS Studio VLC Video Source Looping a playlist Supports playlist playback and a Loop Playlist option, enabled by default. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires a matching 64-bit VLC installation. OBS Media Sources
OBS hardware encoding Reducing CPU encoding work when compatible hardware is available Encoder availability and results depend on the GPU or CPU generation and drivers. Older hardware can produce lower quality at the same bitrate. OBS Hardware Encoding
YouTube HLS ingest Advanced workflows where protocol-level control and higher latency are acceptable Requires a more involved media format and delivery setup. For a standard OBS loop-to-live workflow, RTMP or RTMPS is the simpler starting point. YouTube encoder settings

For one file, begin with OBS Media Source. For a playlist, use the VLC source. Consider HLS only if you already need its specific ingest workflow; it is not necessary just to repeat a video.

Set up OBS to loop a local video

  1. Install OBS Studio for your Linux distribution and open the scene you intend to stream. OBS documents both Media Source and VLC source as available on Linux. Menu names and packaging details can vary by distribution and OBS version.
  2. Add a single video: in the Sources panel, select + > Media Source, create or select a source, then browse to the video file. Enable Loop in the source properties. Confirm playback in the preview. The source must remain accessible at the same location while OBS is running.
  3. For a playlist instead: install VLC, then add a VLC Video Source from the Sources panel. Load the playlist and verify that Loop Playlist is enabled. Test the transition from the final item back to the first, including audio, before going live.
  4. Set the video canvas and output: open Settings > Video and configure the intended output resolution as 3840×2160 and frame rate as 60 fps. Confirm the selected output resolution and FPS rather than assuming the source’s properties determine the broadcast settings. OBS labels can differ slightly by version.
  5. Choose an encoder in Settings > Output. Use an available H.264, HEVC/H.265 or AV1 encoder supported by the system and YouTube ingest. OBS may expose NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF or Intel Quick Sync on Linux, depending on compatible hardware and drivers. Hardware encoding can move work off the CPU, but verify sustained output and picture quality on your actual machine.
  6. Set rate control and keyframes: use CBR (constant bitrate) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives two seconds as recommended and four seconds as the maximum. Check the current table before broadcasting because ingest recommendations can change. YouTube encoder settings
  7. Enter your YouTube stream details: create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio, then copy its stream key into OBS under Settings > Stream (or use the connection fields shown in your OBS version). Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS server and connection details.
  8. Test before the broadcast: start OBS streaming and check YouTube Studio’s stream preview, health status and warnings. Test representative motion and audio, not just a static opening frame. YouTube states that 4K streams use normal latency; its low-latency option is unavailable at 4K.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

YouTube’s English Help page, accessed in 2026, lists 50 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 3840×2160 at 60 fps. For AV1 or HEVC at the same resolution and frame rate, it lists 35 Mbps recommended. The page states lower bounds of 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1/HEVC. These figures are YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a particular Linux system or internet connection will deliver a stable stream. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring OBS.

Run an upload-speed test and choose settings your connection can sustain consistently. Leave practical capacity for normal network variation and other household or office traffic; YouTube does not publish a universal headroom percentage in the cited guidance. If the connection cannot sustain the selected 4K60 bitrate, lower the bitrate or output quality rather than accepting repeated drops. A wired connection may help avoid Wi-Fi variability, but a cable does not guarantee sufficient upload capacity.

Keep the video and stream within YouTube’s rules

  • Use material you have the rights to stream. A video that can be uploaded is not automatically cleared for continuous live rebroadcast. Check the rights for every video, music track and other included material; YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies apply to looped content as well.
  • Do not assume repetition makes content eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization review can consider reused or repetitive content. A technically valid loop does not itself establish eligibility; consult the applicable YouTube Partner Program policies for your channel and content.
  • Check stream health during long sessions. Watch YouTube Studio for ingest warnings and confirm that the source continues playing and that audio remains synchronized after a loop or playlist transition.

For a practical preflight checklist, see StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The video stops at the end instead of repeating Loop is disabled, or the wrong source type or playlist setting is in use. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a VLC source, check Loop Playlist and test the last-to-first transition.
A playlist source is missing or will not play VLC is absent or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC compatible with the OBS build (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), restart OBS and re-add or refresh the VLC source.
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate Upload capacity is too low or fluctuating for the selected bitrate, or competing traffic is using the connection. Check upload performance, reduce the configured bitrate or output quality, and test again before a public broadcast.
The stream drops frames or the system struggles to encode The CPU or GPU cannot sustain 4K60 encoding with the selected settings, or drivers/encoder support are unsuitable. Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Try a supported hardware encoder if available, update compatible drivers, or reduce resolution/frame rate. Test the same representative video for sustained performance.
The stream is rejected or keyframes are flagged Encoder settings or ingest details do not match YouTube’s current requirements. Verify the selected codec, CBR rate control, two-second keyframes, server and stream key against YouTube’s current encoder settings page.
4K stream latency is higher than expected YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K streams. Plan around normal latency, or decide whether lower resolution is more important than 4K for an interactive broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps a prerecorded video or playlist live 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping OBS running on a Linux computer. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo is for YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
