There is no proven universal “lightest” screen recorder for a low-end PC: the load depends on the computer, capture method, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene. For a basic game or app clip, try the built-in Xbox Game Bar if it supports what you need. Choose OBS Studio when you want configurable capture controls and can tune them, or consider Bandicam on Windows if your hardware supports its documented hardware encoders. Make a short test recording before committing to a setup.
How to choose a recorder for a modest PC
“Low-end” covers a wide range of processors, graphics hardware, and memory, so a recorder that works smoothly on one PC may struggle on another. OBS Project explicitly cautions that meeting its baseline requirements does not guarantee that a system can record successfully. Its guidance identifies encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors that affect CPU demands (OBS system requirements).

- For a quick game or app clip: start with Xbox Game Bar, which is already built into supported Windows setups.
- For adjustable capture controls: use OBS Studio, but begin with a simple scene and test settings rather than assuming the defaults will suit an older PC.
- For Windows hardware-encoding options: Bandicam documents support for NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync Video, and AMD VCE/AMF; availability depends on your hardware and software version.
- For a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics: check which GPU runs the recorder and whether that matches the capture method.
No controlled comparison establishes which of these tools uses the least CPU or GPU on representative low-end PCs. Treat the choices below as task-based recommendations, not a measured performance ranking.

Recorder options and their trade-offs
| Option | Useful for | What is established | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Bar | A basic game or app clip without installing a separate recorder. | Microsoft documents recording a video clip of a game or app and keyboard controls for recording and microphone toggling. | The cited guidance does not establish whole-desktop capture coverage or comparative resource use. See Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar instructions. |
| OBS Studio | Users who need configurable capture and are willing to tune their setup. | OBS lists baseline platform requirements, identifies factors that change CPU demand, and offers Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. | Meeting baseline requirements is not a recording-performance guarantee. See OBS system requirements. |
| Bandicam | Windows users who want a recorder with documented hardware-encoding options. | Bandicam documents NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync Video, and AMD VCE/AMF, and recommends reducing recorded or game resolution to help address lag. | These are vendor-documented capabilities and advice, not independent proof that Bandicam is lighter than alternatives. Check current version requirements and free-tier restrictions. See Bandicam’s recording-lag guide. |
Set up OBS Studio for a short, low-load test
- Open OBS and run its wizard. Select Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the suggested configuration as a starting point, not a promise that recording will be smooth.
- Keep the first scene simple. Add only the source you need—such as a game or application capture—and avoid stacking unnecessary sources or effects while diagnosing performance.
- Choose a hardware encoder if one is available and supported. OBS notes that encoder choice affects CPU requirements. The available options depend on the PC’s processor or graphics hardware and the software version.
- Make a brief test recording. Try the intended app or game and check the recording for stutter, missing content, and audio problems before capturing a long session.
- Reduce load if the test struggles. Lower the capture resolution or frame rate, then test again. Bandicam’s guidance specifically recommends reducing recorded or game resolution to help with lag; OBS identifies resolution and FPS as factors in CPU demand.
Do not assume that every low-end PC can record smooth 1080p60 gameplay. The available guidance does not provide a controlled benchmark that would justify that promise for unspecified hardware.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Use Bandicam’s hardware-encoding options when supported
Bandicam documents hardware-accelerated recording through NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync Video, and AMD VCE/AMF. These options can reduce reliance on CPU encoding when the relevant hardware and software support them, but the documentation does not prove that Bandicam has a lower overall load than OBS or Game Bar on a particular PC.
- Check which processor or graphics hardware your Windows PC has and whether it supports one of Bandicam’s listed encoders.
- In Bandicam, select a supported hardware-accelerated codec if it is available for your system.
- If recording lags, reduce the recorded or game resolution and make another short test, following Bandicam’s lag-reduction guidance.
- Confirm the current Bandicam version requirements and free-tier limits before relying on it for a longer recording.
Try Xbox Game Bar for a straightforward clip
Microsoft documents Xbox Game Bar for recording a game or app clip, including keyboard controls for recording and toggling the microphone. It is a convenient first attempt when that capture scope fits your task; the documentation cited here does not establish that it uses fewer system resources than the other options or that it captures the entire desktop.

Fix capture and performance problems on a hybrid-GPU laptop
A laptop may have integrated and discrete GPUs, while OBS runs on one GPU. OBS explains that capture or performance problems can occur when the recorder and the application being captured land on different GPUs. The right assignment depends on the capture method: OBS’s guidance distinguishes Game/Window Capture from Display Capture.

- Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Find or add OBS in the app list, open its options, and assign a GPU according to OBS’s instructions for your capture type.
- Restart OBS and test the same capture again. If you switch between Game/Window Capture and Display Capture, re-check the recommended GPU choice in the OBS laptop troubleshooting guide.
Troubleshoot lag, missing capture, and failed recordings
- The recording stutters or the game slows down: lower resolution or frame rate and run another short test. Check whether a supported hardware encoder is available; encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity affect demand.
- OBS captures a blank window or performs poorly on a laptop: verify GPU assignment in Windows Graphics settings and follow OBS’s separate recommendations for Game/Window Capture versus Display Capture.
- A long recording stops or cannot be saved: check available disk space and whether the drive can sustain writes for the recording. Storage capacity and write performance are worth checking, but buying an SSD is not established as a fix for CPU or GPU encoding overload.
- Game Bar does not capture what you need: its documented scope is game or app clips. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish whole-desktop capture coverage, so use a tool whose documented capture mode fits the content.
- Performance is still unpredictable: simplify the scene, change one setting at a time, and test again. Minimum system requirements alone cannot guarantee successful recording.
