You can blur or replace your webcam background without a green screen: start with the built-in effects in your video-call app. Choose blur to soften the room behind you, or select a virtual background to show a different scene. The exact controls and availability vary by app, device, version, and workplace settings.
Choose blur or a replacement image
Blur is the simpler choice when you want to obscure your surroundings. It leaves the real room visible but softened. A virtual background replaces the room with an image or, where supported, video. Software separates you from the scene in either case, so edges around hair, hands, or movement may not look perfect.

Zoom explicitly supports virtual backgrounds without a green screen. Microsoft Teams and Google Meet also offer built-in background effects. Start with the meeting app’s own controls before installing another tool.

Change your background in your meeting app
Zoom
- Open Zoom’s video or background settings before joining a meeting, or open the meeting’s video menu while on the call.
- Choose Blur to obscure the room, or select a background image or video to replace it. To use your own image, choose the option to add or upload a background and select the file.
- Preview the effect in the camera view. Zoom says a no-green-screen replacement can have less-sharp edges and use more system resources than a green-screen setup. Its virtual-background guidance recommends: “Use uniform lighting and color.” Zoom’s virtual background setup guidance explains the lighting and setup options.
Microsoft Teams
- Before joining, open Background settings on the pre-join screen. During a meeting, open the background effects or settings control.
- Select Blur or choose a built-in or custom background, then apply it as prompted.
- If the effect is missing, note that availability can depend on the app setup and organization. Microsoft says background effects are not supported in optimized VDI, and feature rollout can be gradual. See Microsoft’s Teams background instructions.
Google Meet
- Open the visual effects controls before joining or from the meeting, then select a background effect or blur option.
- Check the preview before joining. Google notes that Meet may crop participant video, so parts of an effect or background may not be visible to other participants. See Google Meet’s background and effects guidance.
App labels and placements can change. If these steps do not match your screen, look for video settings or visual effects in the current version of the app, and check whether your device or organization supports the effect.

Improve the effect without buying equipment
- Light your face evenly. Avoid strong differences between the light on your face and the light behind you. Zoom recommends uniform lighting and illuminating your face and some of the background; NVIDIA also advises lighting the subject to help segmentation.
- Keep the camera steady. Frame your head and shoulders with some space around them, then preview the result in the app and device you will actually use. Check whether hair, glasses, hands, or movement cause visible masking errors.
- Use a simple replacement image. Zoom recommends matching the image’s aspect ratio to the camera frame; it gives 16:9 as an example. Meet may crop the video, so do not assume the full background will always appear to other participants.
- Close resource-heavy apps if the effect stutters. Software separation can place extra demands on your computer; Zoom specifically notes that no-green-screen replacement can require more system resources.
When to use a green screen or another tool
Optional physical backdrop
A green screen is not a requirement. It is an optional upgrade if you want cleaner replacement edges: Zoom says a solid, contrasting screen can improve sharpness and definition around the person. Use even lighting on the screen, choose a distinct color, and avoid clothing that matches it. A green-screen backdrop or solid-color curtain adds setup and space requirements, so try the built-in effect first.
Separate webcam-effects software
If your meeting app does not offer an effect, NVIDIA Broadcast is another possible route. NVIDIA describes it as an app with blur and background replacement intended for use with video-conferencing applications. Compatibility and performance depend on hardware and setup, including GPU, camera resolution, frame rate, and the number of effects. Check NVIDIA Broadcast’s current requirements before relying on it for your computer.

Common problems and fixes
- The background-effects option is missing: Check the app’s pre-join and in-meeting video controls. Update the app if appropriate, and check your device, account, and organization settings. In Teams, optimized VDI does not support these effects, and availability may depend on rollout.
- Hair or hands have rough edges: Improve even lighting, keep the background visually distinct from you, and avoid fast movement. A green screen can improve definition if the built-in effect is still not clean enough.
- The replacement looks soft or the computer slows down: Try blur, close other resource-intensive applications, or use a green screen. Zoom notes that replacement without a green screen can have less-sharp edges and higher system demands.
- Some of the background is cut off: Check the image’s aspect ratio and preview the effect. Google Meet warns that participant video can be cropped.
- The effect works inconsistently: Check lighting and camera stability, then preview again in the exact app and device you plan to use. Feature availability and behavior vary by platform and setup.
