For most Kick streamers who want to go live and save a local recording, OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop are the best-documented starting points. Kick supports both. OBS uses Kick’s server URL and stream key in a custom-service setup; Streamlabs Desktop offers a direct Kick account connection and documents built-in recording options such as selective recording, replay buffer, multitrack audio, and configurable local-file settings. Choose based on the workflow you need, then test it on your own computer: the available documentation does not establish that either performs better on every system.
What should Kick streamers look for in screen recording software?
For a Kick broadcast with a local recording, the software must handle two jobs: send a compliant live video signal to Kick and save a file where you can find it afterward. Check that the app supports Kick, lets you control the stream encoder settings, and offers the recording controls you actually need. Streaming and recording at once can also increase the load on your computer, so do a short test before relying on a setup for a long broadcast.
Kick’s setup guide, published May 22, 2026, names OBS, XSplit, Streamlabs Desktop, and MELD as supported streaming applications. Its practical setup instructions cover OBS and Streamlabs Desktop in particular. Kick’s platform limits apply to the live output, not necessarily to the separate local recording file.
OBS Studio vs. Streamlabs Desktop for Kick
| What matters | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Kick connection | Enter Kick’s server URL and stream key using the custom streaming service settings. | Connect your Kick account through the documented account-connection flow. |
| Recording features documented in the cited material | Kick documents OBS streaming setup; the cited sources do not detail OBS’s local recording controls. | Streamlabs documents selective recording, replay buffer/instant replay, and assigning audio inputs across up to six tracks. |
| Local file controls documented | Not stated in the cited Kick setup material. | Choose recording path, format, resolution, and encoder. |
| Performance evidence | No independent performance testing across hardware is established by the cited sources. | Streamlabs recommends monitoring performance and testing settings; this is vendor guidance, not an independent benchmark. |
Choose OBS Studio if you want a custom-service workflow
Kick’s documented OBS method uses the server URL and stream key from your Kick creator dashboard. This is a straightforward fit if you are comfortable entering connection details yourself. Keep the key private: Kick warns that anyone who has it can broadcast to your channel.

Choose Streamlabs Desktop if its documented recording controls suit your workflow
Streamlabs describes tools for separating what appears in a recording from the live output, capturing instant replays, splitting audio inputs across tracks, and choosing how local files are saved. Its recording guide, updated September 22, 2026, distinguishes recording-only settings from settings for recording and streaming simultaneously. Follow the app’s guidance, monitor your computer, and make a short test recording before a full broadcast.
What about XSplit and MELD?
Kick’s May 22, 2026 setup guide also names XSplit and MELD as supported applications. The documentation cited here does not provide equivalent current detail about their local-recording workflows, so there is not enough evidence here to rank them against OBS or Streamlabs for recording.

Kick’s live output settings: limits to check
Kick’s May 2026 documentation specifies these maximums and requirements for a live stream. They are platform caps, not recommended targets for every connection or computer; use lower settings if your upload capacity or system performance calls for them.
| Setting | Kick requirement or maximum |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264/x264; H.265 is unsupported |
| Rate control | CBR; VBR is unsupported |
| Bitrate | Up to 8,000 kbps |
| Resolution | Up to 1920×1080 |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Audio | Stereo, up to 48 kHz |
Kick’s Help Center explains: “CBR keeps your stream’s data rate steady.” Kick’s setup guide also advises keeping bitrate within your connection’s upload capacity. A maximum is not a guarantee of smooth streaming: if viewers report buffering or the stream becomes unstable, reduce settings and test again while monitoring the connection and computer.

Set up a Kick stream and local recording
OBS Studio: enter Kick’s connection details
- Get the connection details. Open your Kick creator dashboard and locate the server URL and stream key. Do not share the key publicly or include it in a recording or screenshot.
- Configure OBS for Kick. In OBS, choose the custom streaming service option, then enter the server URL and stream key supplied by Kick.
- Set compliant live output. Use H.264/x264 and CBR, and stay within Kick’s limits for bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and stereo audio. Start below the platform maximum if your connection or computer cannot reliably handle the higher output.
- Configure local recording separately. Choose a recording destination and format in your recording software, and verify that the file is being written where you expect. A local recording is separate from the stream’s Kick VOD.
- Run a short test. Check that the stream connects, audio is present, the recording plays back correctly, and your computer remains responsive before a longer broadcast.
Streamlabs Desktop: connect Kick and configure recording
- Connect your account. In Streamlabs Desktop, use its Kick account-connection flow documented by Kick.
- Set the live encoder. Configure the live output to comply with Kick’s H.264/x264, CBR, bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, and audio limits.
- Choose recording options. In Streamlabs’ recording controls, set the destination path, format, resolution, and encoder. Enable selective recording, replay buffer, or separate audio tracks only if those match your intended workflow.
- Check the simultaneous workload. If you will record while streaming, use the app’s guidance for that mode, monitor performance, and adjust settings if the computer struggles. Do not assume a setting that works for recording alone will also work smoothly during a live broadcast.
- Test the result. Make a short stream-and-record test, then inspect the local file for picture, audio, and correct destination before your full session.
Kick VODs and local recordings are different
Kick says an OBS stream VOD is saved to your channel page after the stream ends. A local recording is a separate file saved to a destination you configure in your recording software. A VOD can be convenient for replay on the channel; a local file gives you a copy to manage on your own storage. If you keep local recordings, available disk space depends on your recording settings, how long you record, and how long you retain the files. An external SSD is an optional destination, not a requirement for every streamer.
Troubleshoot connection, lag, or missing recordings
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the stream key and server URL are correct. If you reset the key in Kick, update it in OBS or Streamlabs. Then verify the required output settings and update the streaming software; Kick notes older versions may stop connecting as its infrastructure changes.
- The stream is rejected or unstable: Confirm H.264/x264, CBR, a bitrate no higher than 8,000 kbps, resolution no higher than 1920×1080, frame rate no higher than 60 fps, and stereo audio no higher than 48 kHz. Also make sure bitrate fits your actual upload capacity; reduce it or other output settings if needed.
- The app cannot reach Kick despite correct settings: Check whether antivirus, firewall, or network restrictions are blocking the connection. Kick lists these among possible causes.
- The stream starts, but the computer lags during recording: Streaming and local recording together can strain a system. Lower demanding settings, check performance, and repeat a short test. Streamlabs describes software x264 and hardware NVENC encoding options, but the cited guidance does not establish which will perform best on your particular hardware.
- No local file appears: Check the recording destination path and confirm that recording was started. Make a brief test and open the resulting file before the next broadcast.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Treat the key as a credential. If someone else may have it, reset it through Kick and replace the saved key in your encoder before going live again.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you mean a 24/7 YouTube channel stream made from uploaded videos—not a live Kick broadcast from your screen or camera—StreamNeo is a separate option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives one free day with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
