The five options below cover macOS and Windows, from a portable MacBook Air to a larger ThinkPad. Before buying, confirm the exact configuration, especially memory, and check that required development tools work on that machine.
How to choose a laptop for programming coursework
Check course and software compatibility first
Find out whether classes require Windows-only applications, a particular development environment, or tools built for a specific processor. A MacBook Air is a strong candidate when the required tools support macOS and the Apple-silicon environment. If coursework depends on Windows-only software, choose a Windows laptop and verify that the exact required applications run on its configuration.

Choose enough memory for your workload
Creative Bloq’s 2026 programming guide calls 16GB the “realistic minimum” for running an editor, local server, browser tabs, and a virtual environment together. Treat that as general guidance, not a rule for every course: check your software requirements and typical workload. Avoid assuming a laptop can be upgraded later; verify the memory arrangement for the exact model before purchase.
Compare storage, comfort, and local ownership costs
Check the SSD capacity and whether your files can be moved to external storage if needed. For long coding sessions, consider keyboard layout and feel, screen size, and whether the display suits your workspace. Compare the local price and warranty for the precise configuration you intend to buy; the available sources do not provide a consistent price comparison across all five candidates.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Five laptops to consider for programming students
This is a shortlist, not a head-to-head test or definitive ranking. Product availability, specifications, and prices can vary by country and configuration.
1. Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M5): a macOS candidate
TechRadar identifies the 13-inch M5 MacBook Air as a programming-student pick, and Creative Bloq recommends the M5 Air for developers whose tools support macOS. It is a sensible option to investigate if your classes do not depend on Windows-only software. Confirm compatibility with your required tools and check the memory and storage in the exact configuration before buying.

2. Lenovo ThinkPad T16: a general Windows coding option
TechRadar recommends the ThinkPad T16 for general coding, citing a balance of price, performance, and a full-size keyboard. The evidence available here does not establish the guide’s exact year or configuration, so check the model generation and specifications available in your market rather than assuming every T16 has the same components. It is a candidate to consider when Windows compatibility and a larger keyboard matter.

3. Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 7: compare the memory configuration
Intel’s education matrix lists a ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 configuration with 16GB of SO-DIMM memory, a 14-inch WUXGA display, a 512GB SSD, and a 64Wh battery. It also lists a 32GB model configuration with Intel Arc graphics. These are listed configuration facts, not a current consumer price comparison; Intel cautions that the information may change. Check the exact model number and available configuration with the seller.

4. Dell XPS 13 (2026): portability with a memory caveat
TechRadar describes its XPS 13 (2026) student pick as very light and reports 16 hours and 17 minutes of video playback in its lab test. That figure is a video-playback result for the tested configuration, not a prediction of coding battery life. TechRadar also warns that the base 8GB configuration slowed during demanding multitasking. For programming coursework that involves several tools at once, check the memory in the exact configuration before prioritizing portability.

- Write down required software and operating system. Ask your course or department whether Windows is mandatory and whether any tools must run on a particular processor architecture.
- Set a memory target. Use 16GB as a general starting point for ordinary developer multitasking, then check course requirements and the memory configuration of the precise model.
- Check the rest of the configuration. Confirm SSD capacity, display size, keyboard layout, and whether memory can actually be upgraded. Do not infer upgradeability from a product family name.
- Evaluate mobility using comparable evidence. Distinguish editorial lab results from manufacturer estimates, and do not treat video playback as a coding-runtime guarantee.
- Compare local price and warranty. Check the current price and coverage for the exact configuration in your country; the cited ASUS price applies to its India page and is subject to change.
