If a minimum payment is out of reach, contact the card issuer promptly and ask about hardship options. List your balances, rates, and due dates
Pause discretionary card spending while you make an account-by-account list. Check each statement for the balance, minimum payment, due date, APRs by balance type, and any promotional rate and its end date. Your card agreement and statement explain how the issuer calculates interest and applies payments.

Many issuers calculate interest daily using the average daily balance, so paying sooner can reduce the amount of interest that accrues. The exact method depends on your card terms and the type of balance. Carrying a balance can also affect whether new purchases get a grace period. If you can afford the minimums, pay them by their due dates where possible, then direct the extra amount to one balance at a time. The highest-APR-first approach generally minimizes interest, although the issuer’s payment-allocation rules affect how payments are applied. In general, the minimum portion may be allocated under the card’s rules, while amounts above the minimum are generally applied first to the highest-rate balance. Check your statement and terms for details. The CFPB explains payment allocation.
If even the minimum is unaffordable, do not wait for a payoff plan to solve the immediate problem; contact the issuer as soon as possible.

Call the issuer if you cannot afford a payment
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises: “Contact your credit card company immediately.” Before calling, prepare a clear explanation of why you cannot afford the minimum, how much you can pay now, when you may be able to resume normal payments, and what change you are requesting. The CFPB’s guidance on credit card bills you cannot pay also recommends reviewing income and expenses to identify an affordable amount.

Ask whether the issuer can offer a lower payment, reduced interest rate, fee waiver, or a different due date. These are requests, not guaranteed rights or outcomes. Write down the representative’s instructions and any agreed terms, and ask where to find them in writing.

Compare balance transfers and consolidation by total cost
A balance transfer or consolidation loan is worth considering only after comparing its full cost with your current repayment plan. A lower advertised rate or monthly payment does not automatically mean you will pay less overall: a longer repayment period, fees, or a higher rate after a promotion can increase the total cost. The CFPB’s consolidation guidance outlines these tradeoffs.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Transfer or loan fees | Include fees in the total cost rather than comparing interest rates alone. |
| Rate and how long it lasts | For a promotional offer, check when it ends and what APR applies afterward. |
| Required payment and payoff time | A smaller monthly payment may stretch repayment and increase total interest. |
| Eligibility and available credit | Approval, credit limits, and offer terms affect how much debt can actually be moved. |
| Risk of new charges | New spending can undermine the plan; a transferred balance may also affect the purchase grace period. |
Before accepting a balance-transfer offer, check whether you can pay down the transferred amount before the promotional period ends, after accounting for the fee. Review the new card’s purchase-grace-period terms, and avoid using it for new purchases unless you understand how those purchases will be treated and can pay as required. A consolidation loan can simplify payments or have a lower rate, but compare its fees and full repayment timeline and avoid treating a lower monthly bill as proof of savings.
Consider credit counseling for budget or debt-management help
A credit counselor may help you review a budget, learn about debt options, or arrange a debt management plan. Such a plan may reduce payments or interest, but it is not automatically suitable and creditors must accept its terms. Before sending money to an organization, confirm the services, fees, counselor credentials, written agreement, and whether each creditor accepts the plan. The CFPB’s credit counseling overview points consumers to the Financial Counseling Association of America, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, and the U.S. Department of Justice’s approved counselor list as starting points.

Distinguish counseling from debt settlement
Debt settlement is different from counseling or a debt management plan. The CFPB warns that settlement can involve fees, missed payments, late fees, penalty interest, collection efforts, credit damage, and possible lawsuits. Be cautious of companies that demand fees before settling, promise to make debt disappear, or tell you to stop communicating with creditors. Review the CFPB’s debt relief program guidance before considering such an offer.
